APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!
The next processing date is Friday 11th October
IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE
We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.
In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.
You may apply for two characters every two weeks, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.
Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. If you wish to request a specific apartment, please do so in the relevant part of the application. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.
If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.
Every attempt will be made to place a character in their chosen apartments, though this may not always be possible depending on the slots available.
Applications are open constantly, but are only processed every other Friday at 7PM EST. The Saturday following acceptance, an IC mingle log will be posted for characters to be introduced to the game.
We now have a test drive community athaventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old.

Nathaniel Howe | Dragon Age | 1/Yes this journal has no icons yet
Contact Info:
Other Characters Played: Bethany Hawke -
Preferred Apartment: None
Character Name: Nathaniel Howe, Nate
Canon: Dragon Age ( Awakening )
Canon Point: Following the Mother's defeat.
Background/History: Wiki
Personality:
When Nate is first introduced in Awakening, he comes across as an entitled and bitter little douchebag. He had just come from being out in the Free Marches for 8 years to find his father dead, his land appropriated by the Crown and given to the Grey Wardens (and all his family's stuff) and his sister presumed dead. To be fair to him at this point, he has been through a lot before he has even seen any gameplay. Not that his actions or words paint him in a very positive light until a little later on. He tends to see things he cares about through rose covered glasses in the beginning where his dad is concerned and it makes him even more angry.
As raw as he is in the start, he is bitter at the world. First at the Wardens and the Crown for taking his stuff and "murdering" his father and then later with his father for ruining his life and his sister Delilah's for the sake of power and an unhealthy kink. While he was in the Free Marches, he'd had no control or knowledge over the goings on during the course of the Blight. That makes him a very little angry ball of a disgraced noble and he lashes out at everyone he can until the warden sets him straight. Especially if she or he is a Cousland, his bitterness will be tenfold since he will hold them even more personally responsible for his father's death and his further misfortunes than a warden of any other origin. There is an entire history between the two families and it doesn't begin (or end) well.
That seeing his dad through rose-colored glasses thing I mentioned earlier really cramps his style until he meets back up with his sister. Who tells him straight up that he's been a fool for doing that and updates him on just what kind of crap Rendon Howe pulled in the past almost-decade. Oghren also clues him in a bit until he finally makes peace with it and not-quite (but almost and only not because he is too manly) sings kumbaya with the warden when he/she gives him his grandfather's bow as a gift. It makes him rethink what nobility means (and is) and allows him to latch onto a more healthy role model in his family so that he can have no regrets about letting the memory of his father go.
Aside from being prickly, he tends to be one of the more level-headed party members. Someone has to balance between Anders's jokes, Justice's serious and Oghren's ...Oghren-ness. And Velanna's temper! He sits nicely in the middle of the spectrum, and as far as approval goes likes it when the Warden does nice things for people. His sense of morality is pretty strong, so he will disapprove if his fearless leader takes on the Blight Orfans quest line or is untowardly rude/aggressive with ordinary folks or other party members. And being born and raised a noble, he has quite the code of honor and chivalry about him. Velanna may be an elf, but he calls her a lady and respects Sigrun for having survived Dust Town in order to join the Legion.
So he doesn't judge people, and hates it when people judge him.
When it comes down to a sense of humor, he does have one! Just not the lame brand of silly that Anders dares call funny. He gets rather bored with the mage's needling at his last name, tbh. But he can (with a poker face!) call Velanna's ears clownish to tease her, and cracks jokes with Oghren about being an admirer of his. Nathaniel is confident, but not boisterous. The humor is dryer and on the quiet side.
Most will say that he needs to lighten up. Truth! Nate has a giant stick up his ass, and sometimes does venture into the broody corner. Fenris can move on over because he is the original occupant of that territory. He is serious and all business when the wardens are out in the field and most of the time they're back at the Vigil. His life sucks, ok? It could be worse but he won't complain about it! As Sigrun proves to him, he has to be thankful for the lot he's been given, sucky or not. And he also talks more as the expansion pack progresses! At first he's surly and barely says two words together. By the end he uses complete sentences and hold an entire conversation! Though he is still very direct and to the point. He doesn't understand (or like) it when people beat around the bush, such as Anders does when poked about his past.
He grows over the course of Awakening's woefully short playtime from a douchebag into a confident and capable dude who most fans assume the warden would see as a good choice to become his/her second. I can't say I really disagree! Because he can lead people. In Awakening, he wavers at the warden choosing to save the city and needs to be coerced to stay and help. Pragmatism and cynicism keep him from being ok on his own with staying to save survivors. He can cut losses, as much as he hates to. Yet this has been shown to change (and it will in the game's setting) change over time so that in DA2 he will venture into the belly of the Deep Roads to save wardens who may or may not still be alive.
And there is also the minor fact that he was willing to spare the being who'd started the Fifth Blight and caused all their problems just because he might be able to stop any more Blights. By experimenting on his fellow wardens's corpses no less! So he has a lot of imperfect kinks that needs straightening out and in this setting it's the perfect environment for him to do it.
Abilities/Powers: Nathaniel is a normal human and doesn't have any real ~*magical*~ abilities. But as a rogue and a Grey Warden he can do a few things that the average person can't all the same!
First off, he's a rogue. Meaning he wields a bow, can sidestep more easily around enemies than warriors and evade attacks more easily. YAY. Technically this class gives access to dual wielding and archery, but Nate has taken the archery tree exclusively and can master it eventually in the game. It would take a few months in the very least.
By his admission, he is a proficient scout, hunter and poison-maker. He comes with master combat training in Awakening from his extensive squire training in the Free Marches, and he has three ranks in both stealing and combat tactics. His survival is maxed, and his vitality and clarity each have two ranks taken (the result of improved eating/sleeping habits) and may be improved upon with mod permission in the game. They would boost his health and stamina, and not give him any extra skills.
His rank in poison-making is maxed, too.
For general rogue talents, he's a master with tools and can pick most locks and disarm (and detect!) most traps. He comes with below the belt, dirty fighting, combat movement and deft hands in Awakening. Here is a general list of rogue skills. Of these, he has taken Heartseeker, Evade and Ghost.
His (mastered) specializations are Legionnaire Scout and Assassin.
And as a Warden he can sense (and be sensed!) by Darkspawn thanks to the taint in his blood. He is also one of three people in the game who could slay an arch-demon should one arise. As such, he's also immune to any further tainting from the little buggers and prone to nasty nightmares where they whisper him to sleep.
Items/Weapons:
( 1 ) Howe Bow
( 2 ) Arrows
( 3 ) Warden Armor set

Why is it that people are the most careless when in immediate danger? I will never be able to understand this. Darkspawn taint is no laughing matter, unless your name is Anders. In that case it would be prudent to keep your mouth shut lest the inherent stupidity be sensed by any ogre who happens by.
If it is not, then heed my warning because it will only be given once. The blood of these creatures is foul. It carries a taint that will turn you into the living dead, and drive you star raving mad. They subsist upon the flesh of humans. These creatures called "zombies" I have heard spoken of are very similar. In short? Stay away and let a warden handle them.
[ phew! what a mouthful. he pulls a long suffering look. ]
Anders, that cat has pissed all over my armor. You will clean this at once.
Sample Entry Two: Eight years ago, he'd been a right bastard. Had anyone told him that he'd come back from his fostering in the Free Marches to find his name and land in the muck at the feet of the Grey Wardens and that he would then turn around and join the Order and give dignity back to his family name? He would have laughed in their faces. Granted, he had not been a wastrel nursing a mug of ale or chasing skirts. He was the heir and could not afford to do as Thomas had.
But it'd just be unthinkable that a) his father would turn out to be anything but the shining paragon of greatness he'd built him up to be and b) that he could eclipse the man completely. Yet, he had. Men who spat on his father's memory now looked to him with respect around Amaranthine. The King might not be in any hurry to see another Howe at court, but he was no longer prepared to spend his days there. Unlikely as it had seemed at first, being a warden suited him far better than the tedium of ruling an arling and managing the lesser nobility in it.
He hummed beneath his breath as he ran the damp rag over the smooth wood of his bow. Darkspawn blood was a stain that never came out and he'd be damned if it would ever stay long on his grandfather's bow. Life now while not peaceful, was productive. And simple! He enjoyed that. Straightforward and to the point. He knew where he stood, and what was expected of him each day.
But he didn't want to get too predictable, either. These new recruits told rumors of him scowling even in his sleep. Perhaps if the wardens were ever to give him a vacation, he might brave Antiva. And do a little wenching while he was-- oh, right. Cousland had said that the courtesans there were no doubt part of the Crows. On second thought he might just make an uneventful sojourn to the Pearl instead! Cousland was the one with the patience to deal with those blighters, not him.
-> ACCEPTED
Addendum:
The rundown is this:
✔ A Cousland PC (flexible on gender) released him and conscripted him into the wardens.
✔ All his gifts were given to him and his approval was maxed.
✔ Cousland reunited him with his sister Delilah.
✔ He was a staple in the main party and experienced all events of the game.
✔ He was taken to Amaranthine with the Warden who chose to save the city.
✘ His Warden then sided against the Architect and killed him.
✔ And finally he helped Cousland defeat the Mother.
✔ Because of that his epilogue was a happy one! He actually survived and went on to save Teyrn Cousland from an unspecified threat or accident and was rewarded with some land which Nate then passed to his nephew. And a statue of him was built in front of the castle.
