Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:

Nilvana "Nil" Freire || Crepuscule || Not Reserved

Name: Jae

Note: I use a different rendition of the character's name from the scanlation groups. Both are valid until canon supplies an English spelling.

Character Name: Nilvana "Nil" Freire
Canon: Crepuscule
Canon Point: Chapter 131
Background/History: What are you looking at, idiot?

Personality: Abused for his entire life, Nil is a strong believer in karmic justice. He considers his vengeance the Sermenys' and Navarus' price, as well as the following punishment he incurs for his misbehavior to be his bail. Backed by years of scheming, Nil's violent tantrums, too, are fueled by the realization that the majority of his lifespan has been spent imprisoned. With nary a thought for other goals, all Nil wants is to raze those who have wronged him: His need for retribution serves as his purpose in life.

To that end, Nil has a keen mind that grabs at any opportunity within its reach. He uses people without qualms, rather finding delight in manipulating and breaking his tools for the sake of his vendetta. His is a sadistic streak, bolstered by self-satisfaction and tempered by terror, because Nil is desperate for control.

Nil knows how to sweet-talk, how to belittle, and how to fight. Although outspoken, he has his share of negative, two-faced comments running through his mind instead of out of his mouth. For years, he has held a stopper over the darkest and most insecure of his thoughts, the outbreak of which reveals his fears of his life not being his. His defense is to bark and bite, molding his confrontational habits.

Although he bears no love for the nobles, Nil remains standoffish and pragmatic when faced against those of a similar station to his. Cynical since the beginnings of his misery at Navarus' hands, for whom he had once sung high praises, he has nothing good to say about others and maintains his distance. He is neither warm nor cold toward those unrelated to his quest for revenge, though he would stamp on them if it would further his progress.

But where Nil lacks in discipline, he more than compensates with his work ethic. In addition to his background as a servant, Nil previously did the majority of the paperwork for the Student Council; his absence in the council scene makes an obvious impression when Sai bemoans the work he has to do alone and Sekreuz is saddled with a table's worth of papers. Whether Nil likes or dislikes the task given to him, he gets the job done.

Abilities/Powers: As a junior student at Arzew, Nil has been taught the arts of typical magic and swordsmanship. He claims that he is no slouch in battle and backs his statement through throwing knives, which he wields with stunning ease, speed, and accuracy. His unique ability allows him to create a tunnel that stretches as far as he walks and leads to somewhere – or something – foreign to Crepuscule.

Nil is furthermore weak to the following as a vampire long sheltered by the world of Crepuscule:
  • Sunlight
  • Holy water
  • Silver
  • Garlic

Items/Weapons: 3x throwing knives

Sample Entry: Test Drive Entry
Sample Entry Two: There would be a bad, metallic taste in his mouth whenever he saw the billboard. All the same, there would also be the taste of something sweet, if bitter, when he remembered all the hopeful types spouting heroic words that were deaf in meaning to him. They were obtuse. It was such a desperate grab that he had to keep himself from laughing every time, even if he hated the situation.

The corner of his lips twitched.

Most of all, Nil could have keeled over from the sheer bliss and fury of being ripped away from Navarus. Instead, he shoved the first rock his foot probed with a grumble. He had moved prisons and nothing more. The reminder that he was trapped this time with no face to direct his efforts stank, his features crinkling into a grimace. He grit his teeth but gasped without noise when the earth under him shook violently for a fraction of a brief moment, the bated breath knocked out of him.

Cursing inwardly, he crammed his hands in his pockets and started to trundle back to the apartments. There it was unpleasant, but no less than the outside, where old buildings collapsed from the slightest quake. Between the two, he was more used to useless chatter.

Raleigh Becket | Pacific Rim | not reserved

[personal profile] seeherheart 2013-12-17 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:

Raleigh goes through quite the personal journey- though he does it largely off-screen. What we see in the beginning of the film is a cocky, self-assured young man. He said as much himself, that Jaeger pilots became rock stars, and he relishes in it. He’s overconfident and excitable, and has no regard for orders. He sees the kaiju attack at the start of the movie as just another notch in the belt- a victory already won- and he and his brother and co-pilot, Yancy- are so sure that they can beat it that they disobey a direct order and risk themselves and the city they’re supposed to be defending to go out into the water to save a boat still out at sea.

It’s a costly choice, and the kaiju is more than they bargained for. The fight is devastating, and while the kaiju is eventually defeated, it is at the cost of Yancy’s life. Raleigh lost his older brother that day, and so much more. The two of them were still connected by the Drift- the process that links the two pilots’ minds together and allows them to control the Jaeger- when Yancy was dragged from the Jaeger and killed. Raleigh watched, helpless, as he literally felt his brother die.

When their mother died and their father left them, Raleigh and Yancy banded together and enlisted in the Jaeger program. They were close, and Yancy was a foil for Raleigh in a lot of ways- he was always good at everything, while Raleigh had to work for it. This was a source of some conflict between them, but eventually Yancy convinced his brother that he needed to step up and take what he wanted instead of waiting for things to happen. They were both cocky, yes, but Yancy seemed to be a little more reserved in contrast to Raleigh’s enthusiasm. They were opposites in many ways, the same and many ways, and wholly and completely partners.

When next we see Raleigh, it’s five years later, and he’s a changed man. He’s quiet and standoffish, just out to do his job and survive. It’s very likely that the construction workers he now finds himself elbow-to-elbow with in his new job working on the anti-kaiju wall don’t even know that he was once a Jaeger pilot. All of the swagger is gone. Yet interestingly enough, when Marshall Pentecost comes to offer him his job as a pilot back, after a token “I felt my brother die, I can’t have anyone else in my head again”, Raleigh ultimately accepts. While he may have withdrawn, and doesn’t particularly care for people (in a social sense), he still cares about humanity. He knows what has to be done for the greater good, and he is still very much willing to do it. When he initially reject’s Pentecost’s offer, it is the first, and last time he refuses to do what’s been asked of him throughout the course of the film.

After arriving in Tokyo, where the last of the Jaegers are being kept, Raleigh meets Mako Mori. This begins a shift in his character. She becomes his copilot, and from that point on, everything he does is to support Mako. She’s a rookie, and she has a grudge against the kaiju for the deaths of her family, and she’s Pentecost’s adopted daughter to boot, but he sticks by her. Pentecost grounds them after their first Drift goes wrong, and Raleigh speaks out against it- not for his own sake, but for Mako’s. He wants to know why Pentecost is holding her back. He believes in her ability to fight. A situation that could have very well been only about him is, to Raleigh, only about Mako. He’s supportive and understanding and kind. Perhaps subconsciously, he’s stepped into Yancy’s shoes. And ultimately, it’s with Mako’s help that he finally finds closure for Yancy’s death, and it’s with his help that she finds closure for the deaths of her family.

There’s still more to Raleigh than his unassuming nature though, there’s a quiet confidence about him. He still has some bite to him, knows his limits and his abilities well. He can still hold his own in combat, and he’s not above goading someone or starting a fistfight. He’s not afraid to mention when another pilot needs a good kick in the ass- to that pilot’s father no less- though there’s a certain dry matter-of-factness about it. He’s not overly mean or sarcastic or broody. He’s dealt with is demons- the wound of Yancy’s death and the loss in Alaska is hardly fresh, so if, say, a certain scientist is perhaps a little too enthusiastic about a kaiju that he and his brother fought, he’s not going to be an asshole and start whining about how a kaiju killed his brother and how dare you. He just quirks an eyebrow and calmly says, no. No you do not ever want to see a kaiju alive and up close. Trust me.

Abilities/Powers:

Raleigh is 100% unaltered human being. While he may not have any special powers, he is an accomplished martial artist and hand-to-and fighter. Pilots undergo rigorous training in many forms of weapons in combat, since, in essence, they fight the kaiju in close quarters and usually hand-to-hand. Specifically, we learn that Raleigh is skilled with a bo staff and is pretty good and just plain old brawling too. It’s safe to assume he knows a few other forms of fighting as well, such as boxing.

Piloting a Jaeger is a very complicated process, and while Raleigh would be the first one to tell you that he was never that good in school, he has to be pretty sharp in order to be a pilot. He’s also been shown to know some Japanese.

Items/Weapons:
- A bo staff
- A well-loved photograph of himself and his brother
- His dog tags, now blank

Sample Entry:

[ Have a Raleigh giving the camera a look that is, in part, unsure, but also partially aggravated. ]

I’m not… really sure how to ask this-- no, I know how to ask it, but I never, ever, thought I’d have to ask it. [ he’d say that some parts of his life have become something out of a bad science fiction movie, but considering he spent several years fighting giant monsters that came out of the ocean… well. No room to talk. ] Who the hell brought the singing plant into the apartment? I won’t shut up, and I’m about ready to set it on fire. Pretty sure it tried to take a bite out of me when I was walkin’ by earlier, too.

[ he holds up an arm, revealing the torn sleeve of his PPDC sweater. Yes, they have official Pan Pacific Defense Corps sweaters. Don’t ask. ] Pretty sure it was not smart to bring anything down here from that deathtrap upstairs, let alone somethin’ with a personality. [ let alone a taste for human flesh ]

But seriously, you’ve got an hour to come get your plant, or it’s outa here.

Sample Entry Two:

Raleigh would not wish Haven on his worst enemy- if he had any of those, discounting the kaiju- but there were some days where he missed Mako something fierce. He was sure she could think up something, come up with some key piece they were missing to help them get out of there. She was just that smart. She’d rebuilt Gipsy Danger practically from the ground-up, after all.

But, Mako wasn’t here. (He was glad for that- he really was. She’d dealt with enough in her life.) It was just Raleigh. Raleigh who was way out of his depth. There were superheroes and geniuses and people with magic powers out there, trying to claw their way out of this hellhole, and then there was plain old Raleigh. To be honest, there were days he missed Gipsy something fierce too. Not that the people running this place would be stupid enough to give him a 260-foot-tall robot, and he couldn’t do a thing with it without Mako anyway, but it would sure feel nice to kick a hole in that barrier and stomp his way over to whoever was keeping them here. Man, the look on their faces would be priceless.

Neither Mako nor Gipsy would be joining him, though. At least he hoped Mako wouldn’t be, and Gipsy was--- well, pretty hard to fix up a Jaeger from being nuked from the inside. That, and he was pretty sure their captors were operating on at least one grain of common sense. In the meantime, he would just have to make himself as useful as possible. He spent a lot of time scavenging for food, hauling water from the well, and even moving debris out of the tunnels on occasion. (The first time a monster that had somehow survived the cave-in first jumped out at him, he about had a heart attack, though.) Even if he was just Raleigh, he knew that they all had to get out of this place. No one deserved to be here.

Yes, he did miss Mako, but honestly he dreaded the day when he’d spot someone with kaiju blue streaks in her hair wandering around the well.

Personality: It's difficult to discuss Asbel's personality without discussing how he changes over the game - so I'll start at the beginning. Asbel starts the game as an 11-year old boy, and to be frank he's a little shit. He's overconfident, he's exuberant, he's not very considerate of others at all and drags people into his messes with very little regard for the consequences. He does things without thinking and he basically thinks he's Tiny King Shit of Fuck Mountain. Even as a kid we can see how determined and driven a character he is, when he sets his mind to something; when he brings Sophie home and his dad acts as if it's ridiculous that Asbel can take care of Sophie, he says he's going to do it anyway, much to his dad's chagrin. He runs in with a wooden sword to save an overturned caravan holding the Prince of Windor, despite this being a very obviously bad choice as an 11-year old boy -- the idea of him failing at something, at not being the hero, never occurs to him.

Of course, that fails. Him and his group of babby friends and family - Hubert, Cheria, Sophie, and Richard - go exploring under Barona and accidentially awaken a horrible monster, which proceeds to nearly kill the entire group except Asbel. Asbel's the only one conscious for Sophie fighting it off, for saving all of them, and -- more importantly -- the only one conscious for when the seemingly defeated monster impales Sophie, and she dies destroying it.

Saying this affects Asbel's development is an understatement along the lines of saying "the sun is warm". Asbel's response to this is to flee Lhant and his family, his friends who feels like he's failed (especially Sophie, who now seems to be dead), and become a knight. Becoming a knight was always his dream as a kid, but there's a deeper sense of urgency for why now. It's not because "oh it'd be really cool to be a knight!", which seems to be the extent of Asbel's reasoning as a kid - now it's to protect people. He promised to protect Sophie, and failed - and unlike his friends, he had to see that. They know she died, certainly, but they weren't aware of what exactly happened, and Asbel being conscious for it and knowing he couldn't have done anything, even if he hadn't already been hurt, weighs on him heavier than anything else.

It's Sophie's death that also cuts down on that blind confidence in Asbel, and allows him to reflect and see how flawed he is, where he admits that he can't, at this point in time, protect anyone, where he's realizing that all his rash decisions didn't solve anything, that nobody's better protected now that he's a knight. It's a source of pain for him, that essentially the reason everything happened is his fault; if he hadn't insisted everyone go into the Barona catacombs, if he hadn't dragged everyone around, if he hadn't bothered Richard at all, it's very possible none of the awful things that did happen would have. And later, we see him having the capability of knowing his other flaws; he admits openly that he feels rather than thinks, and one of the reasons he needs - not "likes having around", NEEDS - some of the other party members, like Cheria and Hubert, is that somebody needs to counterbalance him. As much as he knows the importance of thinking things through, he's also self-aware enough to know that he's not going to in a time of crisis.

He's also got one other major flaw that he admits to - the total inability to gather information. Asbel is oblivious to things that happen around him. He's totally ignorant to Cheria's feelings about him that she's very obviously had for about seven years, and very frequently needs things that should have been obvious to people paying attention told to him. The important thing though, is that he's not stupid. He's very capable of making correct decisions based on information once he has the information that he needs, and we see him able to deduce things like complex puzzles in various dungeons to defeat security systems. He's the one making the calls for the party on what to do next, and almost invariably he is *correct* once he has the information, but god help you if you need him to investigate something or find shit out, because he simply... doesn't get things himself.

Of course, his intelligence isn't his greatest strength. It is that heart, that feeling. Asbel is a man who's not afraid to die for what he believes in, and not afraid to do whatever it takes for something. Sophie's death weakens it, makes him unsure of himself, and then seeing her come back and the struggle for Richard tempers it, much like a sword. As a child, he thinks he can do anything and it'll be effortless because he's the best; as an adult, he knows he can do anything, but he might have to work hard for it. And he's willing to put in that work, no matter if the task seems impossible - like saving Richard from being consumed by Lambda, a task pretty much everyone else thought was a fool's errand. He's the kind of person who, when someone's in danger, he will immediately rush to protect them without regard for his own safety, such as when one of his fellow students at the Knight Academy gets swept overboard and, while his instructors are discussing what to do, he's already leapt in, saved her, and gotten back out.

His heart also allows him to have an incredible amount of empathy for people. It's an interesting trait in conjunction with his perceptive failures, because it sometimes doesn't allow him to put himself into somebody else's shoes - but when it does, it's a powerful thing, and allows Asbel to sympathize and understand people who are his enemies in a way that nobody else in the group can. It's Asbel who's horrified when Lambda Richard cuts down Cedric even though doing so is somewhat understandable - partially because it seems (and is) out of character for a non-Lambda Richard to do, but partially because even if that were totally normal for Richard to do, Asbel can empathize with other people. It's the same way he does to save Malik, because he understands that Malik genuinely thought he was doing the right thing (and may have been) by rebelling against Richard. And, most importantly, Asbel is able to empathize with Lambda in a way that nobody else - not even Cheria, who's incredibly empathetic herself - can. He's able to understand Lambda's pain, understand *why* Lambda is destroying everything, and understand that Lambda is not inherently evil but a product of its environment - and with that confidence is able to absorb Lambda without letting it control his body, because he doesn't just *think* that Lambda isn't a bad creature; he knows it, fundamentally, the same way a person knows the sun will come up each morning.

More than anything else, though, Asbel believes in the bonds between people. It's most obvious in the way he acts towards Richard and Sophie, the two who he made a friendship pact with on Lhant Hill. Most people might not put stock into a pact made when you were 11, but Asbel takes it very seriously, and still considers Richard a true friend even when he's flying around and absorbing eleth and basically dooming the world. Everyone else's concern (except for Sophie) is "how do we stop Richard"? for a long time; Asbel's concern is "why is he doing this?" and "what's happening to Richard?" Most other people, somewhat understandably, are concerned about the consequences for the world, but Asbel's deeper concern is why, because if Richard's doing this something must be wrong with Richard, and he needs to help his friend -- no matter what.

He views his friendship with Sophie even more seriously than he does with Richard, which is saying a lot considering how much he cares about Richard. Sophie's one of the most important people in the world to him, arguably THE most important, and much of his time is spent making sure that she's okay, making sure that she's learning about the world and that she's safe no matter what. When Sophie gets seriously damaged by Lambda, Asbel's immediate concern is making sure that Sophie is alright and that they fix her no matter what, and the idea that this means going off into space to a world that they know literally nothing about doesn't faze him at all. He would walk barefoot to the ends of the earth if it meant ensuring Sophie was safe, and it's Asbel who completely freaks out when Sophie keeps insisting that she needs to be the one to destroy Lambda, especially after it's revealed that she'd need to die to destroy Lambda. Even before Asbel can empathize with and understand Lambda, he simply won't allow Sophie to destroy Lambda because he won't let her die, no matter what. Seeing her "die" when he was young made him sure, more than anything else in the world, that he'd never, EVER let that happen again.

Family's also a very important aspect to Asbel. After Sophie's death, Hubert gets adopted off to the Oswell family of Strahta, and they don't see each other until Strahta rolls up to Lhant - and their first meeting is, well, awkward considering that Asbel knows basically nothing about what happened (remember: Asbel's got like zero perception to things that happen around him) and Hubert regards Asbel as a little shit who abandoned everything selfishly for his stupid dream of becoming a knight (remember: Hubert didn't see Sophie get impaled). They're able to get over their differences, though, and while Asbel probably wouldn't admit it immediately he's very proud of his little brother and how far he's come in Strahta, even if it's sort of Asbel's doing (a key reason in Hubert trying so hard in Strahta being that Hubert thought Asbel was a screwup). He takes other family members seriously too - he cares a lot about his mother, even if he does get tired of things like her telling him to get married until he finally acknowledges he's gonna marry Cheria and have like five billion babies, and goes out of his way to help her. He also holds his late father in high regard too, and many of his decisions in Lhant are made with the thought of "What would Dad do?" He realizes what a little shit he was when he was a kid, and understands as an adult that his father was trying to do what was right, and understands that as lords go, Aston was pretty damn good at the whole lord thing.

It's not just his own biological family that Asbel cares about, but the family he's going to have, too. Asbel actually formally adopts Sophie as his daughter and, even prior to that, was basically treating her like a combination of daughter and younger sister. It's pretty clear that the bond they have is something beyond just friendship, and it's important to him to make a place for her in his life beyond just friend. And of course, there's his relationship with Cheria - while it's never directly stated by either Asbel or Cheria in game, by the end of the game it's pretty well understood that Cheria is functioning as the mother to Asbel's father for Sophie. It's certainly the way Sophie sees it, saying so directly more than once during the game, and while it takes him forever and a day to figure it out, Cheria's the other priority in his life and he sees her as family - not as a sister, like he (stupidly) implies in one of his victory quotes, but as a wife.

And Asbel, unlike a lot of other people, bonds very quickly. He makes some decisions that may seem sort of foolish at the time, but Asbel just generally believes that people are good, or that when they're not good, there's a reason they're not good; that people aren't just Inherently Evil. People can do bad things, but it's rare that he rarely sees them as just inherently bad; even Emeraude, who is pretty objectively an awful person, Asbel empathizes with because he understands that there were reasons for the decisions she made, even if he completely disagrees with her methods. This is most of the reason that Pascal and Malik are in the group; with Malik it's more understandable, given that Malik was Asbel's instructor for that seven-year span between Sophie's death and the start of the main story, but Pascal is literally just "some weird girl who offers to help them out" and Asbel's just like Oh! Sure! You can come along! And keep coming along! Hubert points out how dumb this is, and he's probably right in an objective sense, but Asbel's feeling that people are fundamentally good isn't swayed by Hubert's logical arguments.

Asbel is a hero. He's not the most perceptive hero and if he had to do the heroing on his own, he'd be looking for clues while the apocalypse was happening. But he's brave - the only thing he fears are his own self-doubts - and he's kind, even if he's sometimes accidentially an asshole (because of his poor perception.) He'll protect the weak and defend those who need it, and he'll go even further than seems possible for those who cares about as friends and family. He empathizes with pretty much everyone that he can, and even if he doesn't immediately do so, has shown he's very capable of understanding other people's pain and suffering and why they do what they do. He doesn't believe in evil; he believes in "people who are misguided". He might have his issues, but ultimately, he just wants everyone to be safe, and happy, and for there to be peace - no matter what it costs him, or what he has to do to ensure it, and we get to see him grow from "arrogant little shit" to "oblivious protector of all".

Abilities/Powers: Asbel is almost exclusively a physical combatant on the battlefield. He doesn't really have many support abilities, basically relying exclusively on KILLING THE BAD MANS; he hits fast and he hits hard, attacking with kicks, sheathed sword strikes (because Asbel), and unsheathing his sword for more dangerous/stronger abilities. He seems to pretty capable with any type of sword, as long as it also comes with a sheath; presumably he could fight without one too, but his style seems to be based around mixing all three types of attacks up. A list of his artes/attacks can be found here.

In addition, Asbel has a creature known as Lambda sealed inside of him. 99.9% of the time, this is going to do nothing, but in times of serious danger, where Asbel may be very immediately about to die, Lambda has been known to intervene. What Lambda can do exactly hasn't been specified, but we know he's able to bring up barriers and give Asbel the ability to strike enemies in such a way that it completely paralyzes them. Most of the time, though, Lambda will just chill.
Items/Weapons: Asbel will be keeping a sword, Disintegrator; a scabbard, Grimm Scabbard; and some armor, the Jade Vestments. Dude's gotta keep his stuff with him.
Sample Entry: Sample 1Sample 2.
Sample Entry Two: Asbel Lhant was never the kind of person who just sat around doing nothing. Being the Lord of Lhant, being a father (well, "father"), saving the world not once but twice - none of these had made him settle down. He never got tired of doing something, and sitting still simply -- wasn't him. Which is why, this time, he'd wandered out into the woods in Lhant mostly because... well, he was bored, paperwork was done, and Sophie was off visiting Richard over in Barona so he didn't need to go all fatherly/big brother/family-ly on her, and Cheria hadn't come back yet from relief work. So it was just him, a sword, and his own thoughts.

Things were better now. Hubert and Pascal well... well, okay, they were probably going to get married someday. It was an event Asbel looked forward to for a couple reasons - partially because it's always nice to see his little brother happy, partially because honestly they needed to anyway (because now even Asbel, king of lack of awareness, could see how bad and yet perfect they were for each other), and partially because any formal event that involved Pascal would almost certainly prove to be entertaining. It was weird, thinking about it - how she'd gone from "some weird girl Sophie found sleeping under a tree" to "almost definitely going to be my sister-in-law".

He didn't get to see Malik as often - he didn't have as much of a reason to visit Malik, but it was nice seeing the old Captain again. They had a certain bond - something more than just teacher and student. He wasn't exactly a surrogate father, because that would be attaching too close of a family bond. Sophie called him "grandpa", but no, that wasn't right. Maybe something like an uncle or one of those older cousins. He'd always have a great deal of respect for Malik and what he went through.

And Cheria. Not that he'd admit it to anyone but Sophie, but Asbel was... well, of two minds about Cheria, in wanting her to get everything settled and do everything she wanted to do before she came back, and at the same time, wanted her to come back right away. It's ruminiating about her, about wanting to see her and maybe hold her hand and eat her cooking and be a family, that... well, hold that thought, because it's the one time in history that Asbel's noticed something.

His eyes fell upon what looked to be splashes of red - blood, maybe? - coating the ground, and in typical Asbel Lhant Hero Fashion, he was immediately looking around for the source. A trail led him onward through the forest, past trees and over rocks and into encounters with monsters (which Asbel had very little trouble dispatching). The delays were frustrating, as were the times when he lost the trail, because he knew someone might need his help, someone might be in danger--!

The trail led to a small shack, and there were weird noises coming from inside. Of course Asbel didn't stop and think about the problem, because then he would be Hubert; instead, he immediately ran towards the door, smashed right into it with a shoulder, threw it off its hinges, and found--

An old guy throwing paint at a canvas aggressively. Red paint.

Awkward. Asbel stared for a few seconds, like a deer caught in headlights, and the man turned to him. Yep. Lord of Lhant just sorta smashin' through your door, buddy. You know how it is.

Akihito Kanbara | Kyoukai no Kanata | Reserved

[personal profile] unpleasantfetish 2013-12-17 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Background/History: Wikia Entry
Akihito was born to a relationship between a Spirit World Warrior and a powerful Youmu. His mother is the only one we have any information about at this time. Yayoi Kanbara is a talented Spirit World Warrior who randomly sends extremely embarrassing postcards of her dressed up in cosplay. She doesn't seem to visit very often as Akihito lives alone and they seem to argue a lot when they are around each other.

To be honest, if I were to describe Akihito's history it would be "Alone". He's a rare species of half-youmu/half-human and people aren't quite sure why he's immortal. It is believed that it probably has a lot to do with the Kyoukai no Kanata that resides within him though. The Kyoukai no Kanata is the most powerful youmu and is the manifestation of humanities resentments over time. This youmu had apparently decided to live within him allowing Akihito immortality. This immortality and the fact that he is something different and his abilities and powers remain unknown breeds fear in others.

He lives in the town he does primarily for the purpose of the Nase family to watch over and protect others from him. The Nase siblings interact with him out of necessity and not actual friendship--to monitor him and ensure the safety of others. Because of their close vicinity, the appearance of friendship might be something outsiders see but the reality of it is that they don't trust him. Rightfully so too as Hiro'omi Nase was almost killed by him when Akihito's youmu side took over prior to the start of the series.

The information we have been provided up to this point is quite minimal but it's obvious he's gone through life with little outside support. He tends to go along with others plans for him to keep peace and doesn't struggle, argue or try to influence others. He is more the type to allow things to happen to him than to attempt to change the world.

Personality:
I think Akihito himself sums it up fairly well in the first chapter of the light novel. I am sure about one thing, though: I have a bad habit of sticking my nose where it doesn't belong. It isn't altruism that motivates me to behave that way. Au contraire; by making myself indispensable to others, I preserve my sense of self. And that's a sense I very much lack, being neither a human nor a youmu - indeed, being no-one at all. When other people feel that they need me, I feel a sense of salvation. Even I can prove useful to them? That thought alone is enough to make me feel like my life has meaning

In essence, everything you see with Akihito is a carefully designed image he's created for himself. His background and existence being one that leaves people on their toes and constantly observing him has gave way to a personality that is carefully crafted from head to toe. When you look at him, you will not get the impression that he's dangerous or a threat. He wears sweater vests, he smiles, he oozes normalcy, friendliness and kindness out of his very pores. How much of this is an act and how much is really the real him, we'll never know since they are so blended by this point.

The series opens with Akihito observing what he believes to be a suicide attempt by Mirai. Against his better judgment, Akihito rushes up the stairs to attempt to save her--only to find himself stabbed in the chest with a sword of her blood as a result. Where most people would be shocked, upset or angry at this--Akihito simply gives Mirai an awkward smile and asks her to remove it.

Sure, he can't die from something like that so what would he have to get angry about? What's so strange about this kindness he has? Well time passes and Mirai continues to seek him out to attempts to kill him. This entire time Akihito is attempting to befriend her. Never getting more than annoyed at her antics and we learn that even if he's immortal--getting stabbed really does hurt him. He never gets upset with her, in fact he tends to worry about her more than not. Making sure she's eating enough and taking care of herself--even feeding her himself if he feels she's not doing well.

He very seldom gets upset about things, taking a laid back approach to life. He's extremely quick witted and acts as comic relief in many situations in order to defuse tension between others. It's obvious he doesn't like being disliked or untrusted by others and works hard to overcome this especially with those who do show a lack of trust toward him such as the Nase siblings.

Because of this he tends to think more about others than himself. He's extremely self-sacrificing and the type that would throw himself on the blade for an enemy to earn their trust. Especially because he genuinely believes people have a reason to distrust him because of his uncontrollable powers and the damage it can cause. He honestly doesn't blame anyone for their distrust of him, but works hard to make up for it when he is given the opportunity by trying to be useful. So even if you tried to kill him one minute, he might ask you to join a club or to dinner the next.

But if you were to ask Akihito what sort of person he is--he would tell you he's just a pervert with a glasses fetish. He's not afraid to admit to his weakness, carrying around spare glasses and constantly talking about it to anyone who will listen--whether they wish to hear it or not. He just loves glasses and those who wear them.

Abilities/Powers:
-Immortality via extreme regenerative abilities

The issue with Akihito is that even if he has powers, he's not the type to try to figure out what they are. The truth is he could be extremely powerful but since he's not really one to test his limits or act in any way; he might not have any idea of what he's capable.

Since he can be injured, if the wound is extreme it will sometimes sink his human side and bring out his uncontrollable youmu side. His youmu side is extremely powerful, doesn't exactly react to others, has no conscious ability to control itself or self-awareness, is capable of destroying barriers, throws extremely powerful fireballs and can cause the destruction of everything in a large radius around him--people included.

Items/Weapons:3 pairs of glasses.

Sample Entry:
Well this is unexpected.

[Waking up in a room full of other people is definitely not the usual for someone who has spent the majority of his life living alone--without even a parent to attend to him. Eyes scanning the faces of the other inhabitants of the room, he doesn't recognize a single one.

Memory hazy, he tries to recall the last thing he can remember happening but nothing comes to mind beyond Izumi Nase sitting across from him on the train. What had happened between then and now to get him here? Had he really been that tired and vulnerable that he hadn't even realized what had happened to him?]

No one is wearing glasses, so I know this isn't a dream.

[The sudden realization makes him gasp. No! It wasn't possible. Hands patting down the pocket of his jacket, he feels the familiar shape beneath his palm and hurriedly fumbles to pull out the plastic frames from within.]

T-Thieves! All of you! I'm missing two pair! I spent seven painstaking hours going through them last night for the perfect pair!

Sample Entry Two:
His only real power is his immortality, which was rendered completely null and void the moment he stepped on the roof. The only ability he had to help, just gone. Even going up there to make sure nothing happened to her had been vetoed as no one trusted him not to throw himself in harm’s way if something did happen.

All for the sake of a little fresh fruit.

Any number of things could happen to her up there with the monstrous plants. They could devour or trap her. They could impale her. They could break her glasses! No! No. He couldn't think about that right now. It was too depressing.

He would have taken time to scavenge nearby to pass the time and make himself feel better about everything but he didn't want to go too far in case she returned while he was gone. He swore he would go the moment she stepped back in the door safe and sound and not come back until he had enough for both of their shares for the next few days.

"Kuriyama-san!" She stumbled in the door, a few large gashes on her legs and arms a sign of her struggles. Akihito rushed to her side, only to get the makeshift bag of fresh produce shoved into his arms.

"It's not worth it," he sighs, taking the bag from her. Opening up the cloth to start sorting everything. "Eggs. Eggs would be worth it, right now. I'd kill for a rice omelette."

Background/History: Wiki link! I'll also be taking bits of canon information from his spin-off short stories, listed here.
Previous Game History: N/A
Personality:
In the kindest term possible, Rohan Kishibe is an eccentric. A less generous observer might call him bizarre, and people who know him more intimately may say that Rohan is just plain unpleasant. In any event, there's nothing about Rohan Kishibe that's strictly conventional, and that suits him fine.

Defined by his passion for his work as a mangaka, he pursues material and inspiration for his serials with a fervency that shocks and alarms most people— the most important thing when drawing a narrative, for Rohan, is the pursuit of realism, of there being an element of reality even to the most bizarre or fantastical story. He's incredibly thorough with respect to his subject material, and defies and disdains complacency without regarding his proclivities as anything too out of the ordinary. Be it to split a spider in two and lick its insides to find out what it tastes like, or to buy a whole span of mountains in order to pursue the possibility of finding a youkai, Rohan approaches his eccentricity with a flippancy that suggests that his methods are completely normal to him. And why shouldn't they be? Rohan Kishibe is Rohan Kishibe, and he changes and compromises himself for no one. He has the audacity to ignore others' discomfort in favor of his craft, and even finds joy in being beaten up if it contributes to material for his manga, if only because he knows his superior ability to render something in a raw and effective form. Because he's abundantly aware of his own talent, he affords himself leeway in many and most situations, which subsequently comes across as arrogance, selfishness, and pridefulness on his part. Oblivious to his own childish pushiness, Rohan is a self-professed introvert who dislikes interacting with others, and claims to have started drawing because he can avoid people. This is why he doesn't keep assistants despite his demanding schedule, which actually turns out not to be demanding at all, since he can crank out 19 pages of material in 4 days (5, if he has to do color pages). He's just that good, inhumanly so.

And it's precisely that, being a prodigy— if you could call a genius mangaka that— which gives Rohan an inflated sense of importance, which is, to a degree, well-earned through his singular passion for his work, and for his passion towards having people read his material. The distinction here is that he doesn't want his material to be appreciated: he wants people to read his manga, but he famously states that he doesn't care about the money or fame or prestige that may come along with it. In this sense, Rohan considers his career a pursuit, and not the means to an end; and in this sense, he's an artist in the purest sense. The only thing he's afraid of is that people will stop reading his material, and that he'll be left with nothing to do, with no ambition.

This singular mindset, of course, contributes to Rohan's extreme polarity and his extreme pickiness. If he's interested in anything at any given moment, he'll invest himself in it tirelessly— but on the flipside, anything he dislikes, he dislikes just as thoroughly, and just as vocally. His finicky nature makes him quite judgmental at times, prone to shutting people down, and frankly pretty insensitive and/or immature. He believes in wavelengths, and doesn't hesitate to tell anyone when he finds them repellent or incompatible with his artistic tendencies, or just his general sensibilities; he dislikes the protagonist of his canon arc, Josuke Higashikata, fairly openly, and insults him without much reservation. Because he himself is so painfully blunt, Rohan disdains Josuke for being a liar who always says one thing and does another (which incidentally turns out to be a positive trait of Josuke's, more often than not), calls Josuke's friend Okuyasu Nijimura an 'idiot' constantly, and seems to hold grudges and self-affirmed opinions near and dear to his heart. It's completely canon that he thinks that there's no one more amazing than he is (everyone else is regarded as lesser, and to himself, rightly so!!), that he values manga and pretty much nothing else, and that one of his favorite things is to say no to people who think they're hot shit.

So. Rohan Kishibe is...pretty difficult to get along with. Though he does have his good sides, like his ability to identify and be frank about something that really impresses him, his appreciation for people who take risks and shows some guts. The most notable event in relation to his willingness to compliment someone for their general worth is his spar with the Rock-Paper-Scissors kid, who Rohan spares and saves for having strength of will and a flair for the dramatic. He's not a self-sacrificing person, but he has a moral compass that he doesn't concede, and he gives respect where he feels respect is due. One of the notable people that Rohan openly likes is a boy by the name of Koichi Hirose, who Rohan thinks is relateable, likeable, and courageous. When Koichi shows up in a time of crisis, Rohan says sincerely that "that's what I respect about you". If he likes someone, he's willing to help or do favors, however reluctantly— fandom calls him a huge tsundere, but who knows.

And, well, Rohan isn't without his personal affectations. He was quite attached to his childhood babysitter by the name of Reimi Sugimoto, who was killed by the antagonist of the canon arc in order to save Rohan's life. It's implied that the shock and trauma of Reimi's death, combined with his young age (he was 4 at the time) contributed to Rohan forgetting the event entirely, but he eventually reunites with Reimi, who lingers in Morioh as a ghost, through a series of bizarre occurrences that involve finding the serial killer that killed Reimi in the first place. This is the first time we see Rohan show a degree of morality, when Reimi asks Rohan and Koichi to help bring justice back to Morioh: though he initially refuses because the whole thing sounds troublesome, a moment later, he agrees by saying that "it might be interesting to interview a killer". Rohan is rarely straightforward about his moral initiatives, but it's pretty clear, nevertheless, when he feels a sense of duty to do the right thing.

And finally, when Reimi is finally ready to leave Morioh (aka die for real) and be at rest after the death of her killer, Rohan admits that he's sad to see her leave, which is his earnest display of personal sentimentalism. Albeit with a disclaimer: "since this is the end, fine, I'll be honest—".

So, yes— Rohan is mostly unpleasant, childish in his absolute sense of self (he doesn't even think of going easy on little kids, says he loves making them cry), and blunt (he's so rude, really), but you'll never find someone as unshakeable in his resolve or as reliable when it comes down to it, to things that anyone has to do that coincides with Rohan's own goals.

Abilities/Powers:
First and foremost, there are a few terminology issues that come up when explaining Rohan's powers, so I'll outline them here! Rohan is what the Jojo canon refers to as a 'Stand user', which is a fancy label for someone who has the ability to use a supernatural power called a Stand. Without getting into too much of the nitty gritty about how Stands work and getting too in-depth about the rules and regulations behind them, the most important thing to note is that Stands are only visible to other Stand users, that they can only be hurt by other Stands, and that they're a spiritual manifestation/reflection of the user's psyche/self. Thus the name 'Stand'-- it's an abbreviation of the phrase "Stand By Me".

Rohan's Stand is called 'Heaven's Door', which allows him to literally open people up like a book and read their thoughts, past history, and personal information. In addition to reading them, Rohan can also 'fill in' the pages of his subject's book with commands or conditions (such as "you cannot see Rohan Kishibe"). It is not understood as to how long these commands last, but they seem to be in effect until Rohan decides to erase them of his own volition. He can issue complex commands such as the ability to learn a language in a matter of moments ("you can now speak conversational Italian"), and it is unknown as to how improbable these commands can get before they become impossible. He can also erase his subject's memories by ripping out pages from them as you would do with a book. People who have had Heaven's Door used on them have no idea that anything's been done to them at all, and are immobile while they are being read.

Though there were specific restrictions regarding the activation of his powers against his subjects in the beginning of the series, Rohan has evolved through canon to be able to transmutate people into human books almost instantaneously. However, there are some instances where, if his subject is too stubborn or is singularly fixated, his written commands will not stick (demonstrated in a fight against a man with a Stand called Cheap Trick). He cannot save a dying person by writing in a command such as "you will not die", or read a dead person's memories: all he'll see in the pages of a dead person's book are the words "dead", written over and over again.

Since this is an INCREDIBLY godmode-y ability, I'll definitely have a permissions post up regarding the extent of its use. Also, since this is very much a writing-based ability, I imagine that it'll have restrictions with respect to Haven's setting.

Items/Weapons: His sketchbook, pencase containing three dip pens, and an inkwell.

Sample Entry: Test Drive post!
Sample Entry Two:

Rohan rarely draws for his own benefit.

No, that assertion isn't entirely correct— Rohan draws so that his material will be read, which is an action that, in itself, is partly for his own personal fulfillment. So the more accurate assessment would be to say that Rohan rarely draws privately, for a goal outside of cultivating new material, cultivating a sense of reality that he can use in the future. He doesn't draw out of sentimentalism, because sentimentalism isn't important; nothing matters to Rohan aside from his profession as a mangaka, and nothing is more important than his manga.

This is what he tells himself as he tries to sketch a picture of Reimi Sugimoto, a murdered girl now dead and gone, a figure in his life that came and passed so quickly that she might as well not even have existed at all. He frowns at his efforts, tears out the page full of half-completed profiles and figures, dissatisfied and annoyed at how two-dimensional his drawings seem, how inconsequential.

"If I introduced this version of her in my manga," he says out loud, to no one in particular, "people would forget she existed by the next update."

Vocalizing it solidifies his irritation, and he settles back in his chair, squashing the paper in his hands to toss it into the wastebin sitting nearby. He can't quite put a finger on why it bothers him, that he can't remember Reimi as well as he'd like, or that he can't do her image justice (which is an idea that he loathes, because he's Rohan Kishibe).

Rohan rests an elbow on his armrest, his chin on his hand. He tries to remember, recalls what the monk told Rohan about what Rohan had said when he was four years old and crying, four years old and confused, distressed about Reimi's death:

"Reimi let me leave out the window."

Rohan rarely draws privately, because he understands that Heaven's Door can't give him access to memories that are far in his past, and every attempt to draw Reimi Sugimoto the way he remembers her will fail.

He settles, closes his eyes, and thinks about the next 19 pages of Pink Dark Boy instead.

Character Name: Lambda-11
Canon: BlazBlue
Canon Point: After fighting and defeating Carl Clover in her story mode.
Background/History: Here!
Personality: At first glance, it doesn't really seem like there's much to Lambda in terms of personality, as she seems like your typical cyborg clone thing talking in robospeak. She is cold and calculating, follows any order she's given without hesitation or backtalk, runs on pure logic, and has a habit of taking things literally, at least to some extent. This is because her emotions, instincts, free will, and even memories are being suppressed by the woman who brought her back to life: Professor Kokonoe. In reality, there's more to Lambda than meets the eye.

In many ways, Lambda really is like a child, though this is only shown when she isn't under the professor's thumb. She's naive and ignorant to most ways of the world, due to having very little experience actually living it in. She has her database which is filled with knowledge, sure, but that only contains definitions. Definitions which simply cannot replace an actual understanding of something. So when she actually experiences something new, such as a genuine act of kindness, she becomes confused. Even more so when the person causing the confusion states that the reason behind their actions is "just because". Even when running on her own "free will" Lambda is used to dealing with logic...and humans beings tend to work in ways other than logic. Emotions are a big motivation, for example. Emotions are also something Lambda isn't used to dealing with, including her own, so it isn't hard to see why experiencing them would make her feel odd.

That isn't to say she doesn't express various emotions, though. Sometimes she does so without even realizing it. Like the irritation she felt when Makoto was mistaking the meaning behind her words or the uncertainty she felt when the tiny insect known as a Tartar was following her. However, it should be mentioned that, again, Lambda really is like a child. She feels irritation and/or confusion when facing something she doesn't understand, is able to misunderstand someone's intents or "figures of speech" fairly easily, wants to do as she's been told, has a habit of getting easily distracted without someone to guide her, etc. She may be a "fast learner", but that doesn't mean she'll actually understand and comprehend the thing she learned properly. The world isn't black and white, and it will take time for Lambda to realize this.

However, there's something else to Lambda. Something that isn't technically her. When Lambda's mind was wiped, Kokonoe implanted another being's soul into her body. This being's name was Nu-13, another one of the Murakumo units. Despite the fact that its memories were also supposed to have been deleted/repressed, they do have the ability to surface every so often. While Nu was originally what can only be described as a yandere for one person in particular and a killing machine for everything else, whenever the personality DOES surface it's far more laid back than her normal self. This could be because of the lack of the Azure Grimoire that allows her to keep her sanity, but this is just a theory.

In order for Nu's memories to surface and for her personality to kick in a bit, usually someone has to bring up the topic of one Mr. Ragna the Bloodedge, the man whom she is obsessed with. Or, even better, have him show up. This isn't exactly a guarantee it will happen, but it's the best bet. When near Ragna, Lambda often acts a bit more like a normal person would...if a normal person was a school girl with a crush. Like with all threats, she is capable of fighting him, as she was ordered to in just about ever single story in CS, but it should be noted that she's, for the most part, incapable of killing him as her Arcade Mode shows.

Since Lambda is from a fairly early point in her story, Nu will be popping even less than usual. However, she is still capable of popping up every now and then if the right conditions happen.

Abilities/Powers:

Aside from the typical enhanced strength, endurance, stamina, agility, and flexibility that comes with being a battle cyborg, Lambda also has several abilities of her own that stand out. Thanks to her Idea Engine, which functions as her Nox Nyctores due to her lacking one, she is capable engaging in a wide variety of spacial manipulation. The Idea Engine acts as the armor covering her body, which she is able to summon and dismiss at will. Using it, she is capable of making various energy swords and weapons to combat threats, along with being able to summon a small portal that uses gravity to draw opponents to it, thus slowing them down in order to be dealt with more easily.

Her Idea Engine also allows her to levitate off the ground, control the sword-like wing...things on her back, and to engage in something called spacial transfer, which is just a fancy type of teleportation. However, for the sake of limiting her teleportation, she will only be able to teleport to areas she knows, will only be able to teleport around the various places in whichever city she's in (she can't just port to North from Haven, for instance) and that this has a fairly long start up time which also takes up a fair bit of energy.

Finally, she is able to regenerate and repair wounds to herself and damage to her Idea Engine over time and is able to scan those whom she encounters in order to determine their heart rate, species, medical state, etc. Since this is a hefty ability, I will be including a permissions post.

Items/Weapons:

Her Idea Engine and clothes are all she has needs.

Sample Entry: Here you go!
Sample Entry Two:

Upon awakening, the first thought that crosses through the Murakumo Unit's mind is the realization that she never shut down. Or rather, that she has no recollection of having shut down. This alone is strange, but then the a second realization dawns on her: her current location is not where she was before. Following protocols, she tries to get a connection with home base.

"Awaiting orders... Awaiting... Awaiting... Awaiting... Error. Connection severed. Now switching to Automatic Mode. Scanning current location. Scanning... Scanning..."

Aside from her muttered voice commands, Lambda says nothing as she surveys the area, her red visor glowing brightly as she attempts to determine her location. Any landmarks, familiar sections of the area that are stored within her memory banks, etc. After a few seconds she stops scanning the area. Her visor starts to grow dim, before eventually returning to its original color.

"Scan confirmed; no information on current location exists within database. Reorganizing priority list... Reorganizing..." as she mumbles to herself, all sorts of thoughts and ideas fly past her as she tries to pick out the proper one. Reestablishing a connection with Kokonoe is important, but on the other hand...she's got to get out of here. Of course, self preservation is also very important, as is finding out where she is. Hmmm...

"Reorganization complete. Self preservation is first priority. Collection intelligence on current location is second. Reestablishing connection with superior and returning to base are third. Now beginning to collection information on current location." and with that, she floats over to the window. The sign outside says "Haven"...is that where she is? Probably. When nothing comes up in her database, she turns away from the window and heads for the door. Talking with people is probably her best bet for collecting information.

Once her hand touching the knob, however, a strange feeling starts bubbling in her chest. An emotion, no doubt, but...which one. Fear? Hesitation? Confusion? Distress?

...bah, it doesn't matter. Not wishing to be slowed down by a thing she doesn't understand, Lambda ignores the feeling and opens the door. Hopefully, she'll be able to get back to Kokonoe soon. If not, well...she just doesn't know.

Character Name: Alice (Baskerville)
Canon: Pandora Hearts
Canon Point: Retrace 82; right before she returns to Oz & Gilbert (+ Haven memories)
Background/History: Spoilers
Personality:
The character of Alice is something that Alice herself is still learning to define. She is an amnesiac, caught between the self she has forgotten and the self she is now becoming. The crazy adventure that troublesome hero Oz has dragged her on forces Alice to reevaluate herself and what she wants from collecting her memories, as well as who she wants to be.

So when describing her character it may be best to start right there; at Alice's relationship with her amnesia. At the start of the series Alice was conflicted by how she wanted to remember herself and how she was secretly afraid of remembering. She wasn't sure who "Alice" was and wondered if recovering her memories would really help her; after all, Alice the chain was potentially going to be a huge contradiction to who she was before. Alice wasn't sure how she would handle being a contradiction to herself. This conflict was solved early in the story, as Oz reassured Alice that no matter what she discovered she was still "Alice" and still had a place with him and Gilbert. This redefined Alice's goals from wanting to recover her memories and become herself to wanting to recover her memories and understand where she had been, now knowing that it was okay for her past and future to be entirely separate.

That said, Alice the chain is not a far stretch from Alice the human. Alice is something of a spoiled brat who is naive and, well, kinda stupid. It is not entirely her fault; the chain was locked in the Abyss with no memories, and her human life was spent locked in a tower. Alice has not had many chances to experience the world around her, so interacts with new objects and concepts with childish naivety. She has never had to be a polite girl, so has almost no manners to speak of, and she doesn't understand "real world" concepts like money.
So she is very curious. Just like human Alice did, Alice the chain has an oral fixation that drives her to stick random things in her mouth as she investigates. We see this many times in canon, such as when Alice is about to stuff a live rat in her mouth or when she starts chewing on a stuffed bird. As a human, Alice is shown to affectionately chew on her stuffed rabbit, Oz.
But most apparent about Alice is that she is a total brat. There is no sugarcoating this fact. Alice is very full of herself and prone to bragging, even about talents she does not have. This is especially apparent in Alice the chain; before she began to regain her memories, all Alice new about herself was that she was a very powerful chain. She defined a large portion of her "self" around being the Bloody Black Rabbit. Her power and status would go to her head, causing Alice is laugh maniacally and honestly act like a lunatic. She is first introduced prancing around Oz, singing songs of delight for the fact he is about to be dropped into the Abyss.
This side of Alice's personality begins to melt away as she spends more time in her human form. As Alice begins to define a "self" outside of being the Bloody Black Rabbit she focuses less on being the B-Rabbit and more on being "Alice." This separation between the B-Rabbit and Alice is what keeps Alice from suffering a total meltdown when she learns that she isn't even the B-Rabbit to begin with. Instead she just turns her focus to being "Alice" and accepts being the B-Rabbit as part of her past, just like how she handled her original identity crisis.

Brat Alice has been a part of her since long before the B-Rabbit. Human Alice was very possessive and bossy, not at all helped by the fact her best friend was a stuffed animal. Alice still views herself as being superior to those around her and treats the people she meets as underlings. She calls Oz her manservant and has decided that everything, and everyone, Oz owns therefore belongs to her. The chain of ownership means that Gilbert also belongs to her. She can be a bratty mistress at times with a foil temper and rude attitude towards her 'belongings,' expecting Oz and Gilbert to do whatever she asks and then kicking them when they don't. But for what it is worth, she is also a very loving mistress. Alice is incredibly protective of the things that belong to her, which is what drove her to become the B-Rabbit in the first place: She did not want Oz to be used to hurt people, so she took that power away to protect her precious friend. Similarly, Alice gets upset with Oz for trying to kill someone when she felt that was too much of a burden for her precious servant. She may be a mean and bossy owner, but Alice doesn't like unnecessary burdens to be placed on what she owns.

All of these traits of hers are very obvious. Oz mentions in an early chapter that he finds Alice "dazzling." She is in direct contrast to him in the way she handles her emotions. While Oz tries to hide his feelings, Alice lets the whole world know what she is feeling. If she is happy then she is smiling brightly and prancing around like a kid in a candystore. If she's mad then she will kick Oz down a flight of stairs without pretending to feel sorry. If she's sad then she will cry until her eyes feel like they are melting. There is no middle ground for Alice's emotions; it's either 0% or 100%.

The series has forced Alice to redefine her goals over and over again. With her new canon update, Alice's primary goal has become her friends. She is motivated mostly by how she wants to be with them. Her memories are a side quest now, while staying with Oz and Gilbert is her true goal. Alice may have a personality that pushes people away, but she is rarely intending to do that. Above all else, what Alice hates the most is to be alone. She hates to be alone and she hates to feel like she doesn't matter. It's this that causes Alice to cry so hard when Oz rejects her and sends her away. To Alice, the worst thing in the world would be losing the people she loves and, worse yet, having them not want her there.

Also she really likes meat and practically lives from meal to meal. If she isn't worried about her friends then she is worried about filling her belly.

Abilities/Powers:
For the entire series, Alice has been a naughty little power thief. In her dying moments, Alice the human grabbed hold of Oz the B-Rabbit's power and used it to keep herself "alive." She "became" the B-Rabbit and dropped into the Abyss.

As the series progressed, Alice slowly began to lose control of the B-Rabbit's power. By this point in her canon, Alice is almost entirely powerless. Oz has rejected her and sent her back to the Abyss, where she wallows with whatever shred of power she has left. In Haven she will be the same; essentially powerless. Any power she does wield must be unsealed first and can easily be taken back by Oz anyway, so instances of her even trying to use it will probably be around zero.

Won't stop her from talking like she's a big shot, though.

Items/Weapons:
Girl's got nothing but her clothes

Sample Entry: I previously played her in Haven. Here is her tag and here is a random thread.
Sample Entry Two:
For Alice, nothing was worse than this severe lack of food. She had been reassured again and again that she could just find food in the run-down stores, but none of it really pinged her interest. Most of the food she had found was in cans and was "mushy and gross". Alice had standards, or at least that was what she told herself.

Haven North apparently met those standards. Alice had heard that the Northern part of Haven had real food. And other things. But mostly real food. She had also heard some little things about monsters in the subway, but pish-posh, no problem. Such a no problem that the great Alice-sama wasn't even thinking to prepare herself for such a thing. She just swung her arms confidently by her sides and took giant steps filled with pride, marching to the subway without a second thought.

None of this could end well.

Kaoru Nagumo | Hakuouki | Reserved

[personal profile] disdressed 2013-12-19 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Kaoru Nagumo is, in a word, an actor. Amazingly adept at playing many roles over years and years, Kaoru is an accomplished liar, hiding most of his true emotions under a veneer of politeness and sedate conversation.

He has a habit of cross-dressing as a disguise, which allows him to slip past someone’s guard that he wouldn’t be able to as a man. With a history of playing the part of a noble young lady and a doctor’s assistant, it’s simple enough for him to fit into most groups while passing as a non-threatening, quiet girl. He sees no shame in doing so, possibly due to his up-bringing that put women above men, but it’s a battle tactic. He does not particularly enjoy dressing this way if he doesn’t have to. It’s just one more way of acting, which he does even when dressed as a man.

Very few people will ever see more than this, as Kaoru avoids closeness with people out of long habit and dislike of humanity in general. Due to this and his strong hold on his composure, he hardly ever shows his real, more vulnerable emotions, save for anger. If someone manages to make him truly angry, it comes swift and strong, and the person in question will quickly become a target of violence. He doesn’t bother to hold himself back from revenge, seeing no point in mercy when he has been shown none. Killing is as simple as a quick slice of a blade for him, and he has no moral misgivings about doing so.

For Kaoru, people are either tools for his personal use or someone on the same level as him, whether he likes them or not. He doesn’t allow much room for a middle ground when it comes to people or his decisions. He doesn’t change his mind, or regret his actions, rarely ever even second-guessing what he’s decided to do. He only regrets what others have done, feeding into his cycle of blaming everyone else for his lot in life.

Most of Kaoru’s actions revolve around his trauma and his bitterness, born from long years of abuse from his adopted family , the trauma of watching his village be slaughter, and the jealousy at how charmed his twin sister’s life was in comparison. His emotional instability makes it difficult for him not to cause unnecessary conflict. He likes to tease and hurt people for their reactions, which he thinks are funnier the more upset they get, as when he deliberately goads Okita into accepting his offer by calling Okita’s body “broken” and talking about his physical weakness, which is a well-known sore point. Though he is intelligent enough to manipulate not only other demon, but separate factions in a war, and play the damsel in distress quite well, he likes to behave in a deliberately antagonistic way. He has been hurt, and therefore, he wants to hurt others in return, even if they have done him no wrong. He easily uses this trait of his personality and his own twisted logic to justify his plan of murdering millions of humans, which at its core is strictly about revenge.

The main source of his hurt shows itself in Kaoru’s desperate obsession with his twin sister, Chizuru. His love has twisted into a hurtful, angry emotion, but he loves her nonetheless. He spends a lot of his time thinking of ways to hurt his sister, going out of his way to ruin the lives of the people she is close to in order to cause her misery. Seeing her happy sparks deep-rooted jealousy that she did not have the same sort of childhood as he did, and rage that she had the audacity to do so while forgetting he even existed. Even so, he desperately wants to make her suffer so that they can be equals again, like they were as children, and so she can understand what he’s been through. All of his potential happiness is pinned on the hope that when Chizuru has “earned” his forgiveness by surviving under his emotional torment, she will understand him and choose to stay by his side as he fulfills his goal of wiping out all of humanity and letting the demon race they belong to rule the world.

Abilities/Powers: Kaoru is a “demon” (or an “oni”, depending on your translation), a human-like supernatural creature. He is much stronger and faster than most humans, and he can take significant more damage to his body than even the strongest man could before he falls.

He can heal from even severe sword wounds, if given a few days of rest. Of course, lethal injuries from bullets and blades to the heart and head aren’t something even a demon can recover from, but he has a better chance of surviving less immediately fatal injuries than most.
He can transform his appearance so that he grows horns, his hair turns white and his eyes gold, as well.

He is also well-trained and practiced in swordplay, enough to hold his own against a famous swordsman in the war they're in, and has some skill in Western medicine circa the 1860's.
