Applications

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!
The next processing date is Friday 11th October

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every two weeks, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. If you wish to request a specific apartment, please do so in the relevant part of the application. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Every attempt will be made to place a character in their chosen apartments, though this may not always be possible depending on the slots available.

Applications are open constantly, but are only processed every other Friday at 7PM EST. The Saturday following acceptance, an IC mingle log will be posted for characters to be introduced to the game.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old.

Abilities/Powers:

LET ME SIT YOU DOWN AND TELL YOU ABOUT HOW THE MECHANICS OF FOLKLORE WORK

It's rather similar to the game of Pokemon. You go out, find creatures, battle the creatures, capture them, and then use them to fight other creatures! Pretty simple. Except replace creatures with "souls of the dead that have changed into monstrous creatures" and you've pretty much got how the gameplay in Folklore works.

Keats is one of the few people who has the power to absorb the Ids, or soul-like essences, of the creatures he finds in the Netherworld Realms, which are called Folks. Folks are essentially souls of the dead that, upon not finding peace, become twisted into terrible forms and become rather hostile towards anything else they encounter. Keats can take these Ids and use them in battle against other creatures. This, of course, will not be usable in Haven, considering that the monsters there have no Ids he can absorb, but this is just put here to explain how he got his Ids that he uses in the first place.

While the other main character, Ellen, merely summons her Ids to fight for her, Keats employs a very different fighting tactic- he uses the Ids as almost part of himself, bolstering his attacks to terrifying and incredibly violent heights. (See the Fighting Spirit TV Tropes page for a better explanation!) However, he can't constantly keep using the Id's abilities as many times as he wants, one after the other- he does get put under strain if he does so, and while it takes only a couple minutes to recover, he is left wide open and vulnerable for that short period of time. (Basically, in video game speak, he has a meter for his Id-using ability- bigger, stronger Ids use up the bar more readily, and once it is depleted, he can't use any Ids until the bar goes back up again after a minute or so.)

SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, let me link you to the page where the fifteen Ids he will be having at his beck and call in Haven are listed!

LIST OF FOLK IDS HE CAN USE IN HAVEN

Also of note: whenever he gets into the presence of a monster, his eyes glow purple and his whole form seems to shimmer with unbridled power- this seems to be a somewhat involuntary reaction, as he sometimes has this occur even when the player doesn't see any enemies on screen yet, so basically he's like a walking monster detector, as well.

There's also a mode called Transcension, where Keats can transform into a more powerful version of himself and decimate enemies within seconds, but this requires a certain amount of souls to be absorbed before this can happen, and therefore wouldn't be available in Haven, given that the monsters there cannot have their essences absorbed in any way.

Okay, now onto the SUPER SPOILERY STUFF:

Keats is a Half-Life, as said before.

Basically, he's a child's glorified imaginary friend, born specifically to grant a deeply-seated desire or wish- in this case, protecting Ellen and all the people in the village that Herve loved. But what this means means that, while all children will see him without any problem, adults are less likely to do so unless they believe in magic and the supernatural a little bit. This was displayed in a quest that Keats could undertake in the game- an outsider came to the village and couldn't see Keats until he started doing things for her (like bring her specific items, etc.) and then she started to be able to see him. Yes, the irony of a an occult magazine reporter who doesn't believe in the occult and yet can only be seen by people who believe in the occult...I will have a permission post for this!

Also, while Half-Lives usually disappear after their purpose has been fulfilled, Keats' role has been "upgraded" due to the fact that he became a Guardian to Ellen. Now, he'll live on for eternity, much like Belgae, Livane's Guardian, who is shown still very much existing after Livane has passed away. But...he'll never know this unless the truth is revealed to him. While he is immortal in terms of "never aging and dying of old age", he can still be killed- but if this ever happens, there will be no physical evidence left of it. Keats will merely disappear into thin air as if he was never there in the first place, much like the Folk and other Half-lives do after their death.

Items/Weapons:
1. A tape-recorder which he apparently carries at all times.
2. A copy of Unknown Realms magazine
3. The long badass purple coat he is almost always seen wearing.
