1. Be considerate This includes IC and OOC. Please be courteous to your fellow players, and try to resolve any conflict politely. Bullying and harassment are taken seriously, and are not permitted at all. Don't godmode (take control of another player's character without permission), or infomod (allow OOC knowledge to become IC knowledge unrealistically).
2. OOC =/= IC Just because a character is rude or offensive, does not mean the player shares those views. Please try to keep IC and OOC separate.
3. ICA = ICC In Character Actions = In Character Consequences. Feel free to make a stir with your character, but please be prepared for consequences from the NPCs or other characters.
4. This is a panfandom game We accept canon characters and OCs, we also allow previous game memories to be retained. We do not allow AUs, fandom OCs, or duplicates. This does not apply to canon AUs which are sufficiently different to one another (for example: Mickey Mouse from Kingdom Hearts and Mickey from the Disney cartoons). If in doubt, please ask.
5. Please be aware of the activity requirements Each AC period will last from the first of the month until the last day of the month. An AC post will go up in the OOC community on the first, where all players will be required to submit proof of their activity from the previous month. Activity can be either of the following:
One post or log AND a thread of five comments or more. OR Three threads totalling thirty comments or more.
Failure to comment to the AC post or provide sufficient AC will result in being removed from the game. You are free to re-apply for an ejected character; but to be fair to other applicants, you must wait a month before doing so.
6. How's My Driving? A bi-monthly game-wide HMD post will be posted in the OOC community. While it is not mandatory to participate, it is strongly encouraged. Anonymous will be enabled, but moderators will be monitoring the post for any signs of hostility or bullying.
7. Explicit Content Haven is a horror game, and will often deal with disturbing and graphic themes. Any extremely explicit content posted by players (sexual, violent, etc) must be placed under a cut and warned for.
8. The moderators are here to help If you have a problem or complaint that needs to be dealt with by the moderators, please do get in contact. You can use the anonymous-enabled concerns post, or use the information on the mod contact page.
9. Time Zones In the effort to be considerate to multiple time zones, all events and important posts (activity check, etc) will go up around 7pm EST.
10. Tags Each character will receive their own tag created by the moderators, this tag should be used when your character is both the original poster of the entry and when they tag into a post. There are also tags for each important location, free to use for all posts.
11. Communities Haven may use the main community and logs community a little differently to other games. A guide on how to use them can be found here.
12. Breaking the Rules Breaking the rules will result in a strike being placed against you, any player receiving their third strike will be removed from the game. However, any instances of plagiarism or harassment will be cause for an immediate ban.
So what sort of game is this, and how does my character end up here? Haven is a horror game, and will compromise of predominantly plot-based horror events. Characters wake up in an apartment one day, it's a mystery how! For more information, please see the premise and setting.
What sort of characters are allowed in Haven? Haven allows canon characters from any published medium, as well as OCs and canon AUs. A canon AU is a different version of the same character within the published canon, a canon AU must be sufficiently different from the original canon character to be accepted (e.g. Mickey Mouse in Kingdom Hearts and in the Disney cartoons). The rule is intended for the same character in completely different canons. For example, the KH/Disney one stated, or Quasimodo in Disney's Hunchback and the live action film 'Quasimodo'. We do not accept fan-made AUs, two versions of the same character (anime and manga, for example) or canon OCs. Characters are also allowed to bring in previous game memories, if they should choose to do so. However, powers gained in previous games (additional to canon powers) will not carry over to Haven.
Do my characters have their powers? Yes, but these may be liable to be taken away during some events.
My character has a pet and/or summons, can they come? Ordinary pets can't come. If a summons is the result of a personal ability (example: Final Fantasy), then they are allowed. Pokemon trainers can have two inhabited pokeballs with them on arrival.
I want to apply for a giant mecha/animal/six-armed alien. Go for it! All character types are welcome here, and there's no need to humanize them. The only alteration is for characters over 15 feet tall, they must be shrunk to under that height. Child characters are allowed in Haven; however, applicants may be asked to justify how they will fit within the setting, this is especially true for characters under eight who will usually be considered too young for the themes of the game. For characters whose physical age does not match their mental age, or for characters of a race/species that ages differently for humans, that will be taken into account.
How do our characters communicate? Each character wakes up with a battered cell phone that is capable of both voice and video, though not text. Conference calls to several people or the whole game are permitted. As for how they all speak the same language... it's a mystery!
Why are there no books or written materials? That's one of the mysteries of the game...
But surely there is text display on the phone to list contacts? No. The phone automatically updates as people leave and arrive, showing a picture instead of their name. Caller ID functions as a picture of the person calling, not their name.
Is there a record function on the network? I.e. can my character look back over past calls? No, afraid not.
What happens if my character writes something themselves? The writing will last for thirty minutes and then vanish.
My character wants to destroy a building/blow something up, can I? Go for it! But be warned, things are watching... If you want to cause damage to one of the important locations or hurt NPCs, please run it by a mod first.
What stops my character leaving this town? Nothing, theoretically. But any attempt to leave the town will bring the characters against an invisible barrier that extends right around the town, and is impossible to fly over.
What happens if my character dies? Following the event of September 2014, death is currently semi-permanent. What this means is that if your character dies, you have a choice between dropping them from the game, or leaving them dead until the next application round and then soft-resetting them (this means they will be as if fresh from canon).
My character is injured/ill, do they keep this? Any old injuries (like an old football knee strain) or disabilities remain as they are. Any life threatening illness or injuries sustained immediately before arrival will be healed, this is to stop characters arriving and being unable to do anything at first.
Can I bring in any items or weapons? Your character may arrive with up to three items, these may include weapons or personal items. However, please be sensible about this. Guns and a photograph of loved ones is okay, a rocket launcher or a car is not.
Can I bring in a book or ID? Of course! But these items will be wiped clean of any writing. Books with blank pages, dog-tags with no ID number, etc.
Where do our characters live? On acceptance to the game, each character will be assigned an apartment within the housing spiral, you can see where others are living here!
I want to canon update my character, can I? Yes, but it must be run past a mod first. The character will enter a coma-like state for 24 hours and then wake up updated. They will remember going home and spending time there again. Just go here and fill in the form.
I'm interested in learning more about the NPCs, different location, and plot so far. Is there information on this? Yes! Important locations can be found here, NPC information can be found here, and the plot so far can be found here.
Is there a schedule of events? Look right over this way!
I heard the date IC is not the same as the date OOC, is this true? Yes, it is! The characters (and players) only discovered this after over a year of gameplay (in October 2013). A calendar has been provided over here where you can instantly compare the date OOC to the date IC.
Is this game based on any game/movie/anime that I might know? No. It takes inspiration from Silent Hill, Uzumaki and The Shining, among others.
What are you looking for in applications? Personality and samples are the most important bits! Please see the application post for more details.
Do you have test drive memes? We have a permanently open test drive community at haventest where any potential player is welcome to post.
How many characters can I have? The character limit is six, with a maximum of two from the same canon.
How do reserves and applications work? Reserves open on the third Friday of a month and close on the second Sunday of the following month, you can reserve two characters at a time and the reserve will last until the second Sunday of a month. Applications open on the second Friday of a month and are processed on the third Friday of a month. Once a character is accepted, there will be a mass intro log the following day (Saturday). App challenges are not allowed, nor are extensions on reserves. Please see the application post for more details.
What is this intro mingle? The intro mingle log is a place where all new characters must join the game, and is posted the day after applications are processed. The post contains options for action and network segments to provide choice.
I want to go on hiatus, am I exempt from AC? That depends on how long your hiatus is, please see the hiatus post for more details.
I want to pick up a previously dropped character, can I? Of course! When characters are dropped, they simply disappear from Haven.
What happens if a post goes over 5000 comments? This is a recent addition as this has happened a few times and we've hit CAPTCHA. If a post goes over 5000 comments and there is a thread you want to continue, just head on over to this overflow post.
I have more questions! We have a Nitpicker's Guide to Haven with much more information, which is kept updated as the game changes. A summary of the questions and answers already asked on this page has been compiled in an easy to search database here so please peruse both of these, and if you can't find the answer you're looking for then please feel free to ask them here, or friend the mod on plurk at yoohoohoo
So the character I want to app has an animal familiar which allows her to shift gravity when it is present. The cat exists normally when she isn't shifting gravity, but it disappears when she begins shifting gravity. It also contributes to certain gravity attacks she uses in the game. I was wondering if it would be ok to app her in with the cat or not, since it contributes to a very large part of her abilities (without it she isn't able to shift gravity at all)
Unfortunately, as the familiar is around when she's not shifting gravity, it would count as a pet. This was just ruled with another similar case in the applications (Rachel Alucard), as familiars walk the line between pet and summons.
There may be further opportunities to regain pets/familiars later in the game, I apologize for the inconvenience.
So just out of curiosity, and because I didn't want to potentially be a spanner in the works. If a character could breathe underwater, or in this case: a waterbender capable of staying underwater for extended periods of time. Would there be anything stopping them or consequences taken from jumping into the well?
I wanted to ask given its importance and if anything would happen should someone decides to go diving.
I have a question about death notes. Would Light be able to bring one with him? Also, if I had a permission's post set up for its use, would it work in game?
He can certainly bring it with him, but it would be blank and would not work.
Any names written in it would disappear after a short time and the town would exact consequences for writing too often (Haven is funny about the written word).
I'm not sure if this question has been asked before so sorry if it is a repeat. I'm very interested in applying an original character for this game, but I do have a question.
By canon OC, what exactly do you mean? My original character is from a set universe (Yu Yu Hakusho) but has nothing to do with any of the actual characters from that show. Would this be acceptable? Or would she have to be from a completely original universe?
I'm afraid she would have to be from a completely original universe. Canon OC simply means an OC set within a canon's universe, regardless of connection to any actual characters.
I hope this clarifies and you'll still consider applying to Haven.
Hey there! I had a question about a certain power for a charater I'm interested in apping
If you're not familiar with the Dawn/Aria of Sorrow Castlevania games, Soma's power is that he has lots of simple, one purpose spells/skills (throw a magic bone, turn into a bat, increase his strength, etc.) that he can use as long as he has the mana/energy for it. Though he can only have one offensive spell, one defensive spell, and one passive bonus spell active at once, he can swap them out at will. He'd reasonably only have 30-40 of the 110ish skills available, as most of them require a bit of farming to acquire.
Would it be necessarily to impose any further limits on his spells, such as the total ammount he can have or how often he can swap them out, if I were to app him here? I can provide more details if you need them!
If the 30-40 are small skills, I don't see a problem. If you choose to apply, just give solid links and a list of which ones you plan to use, and any further discussion can be made if necessary then. But I'm sure we could work something out!
I have a question about what items can be brought in. Characters from Homestuck have a sylladex (http://mspaintadventures.wikia.com/wiki/Sylladex), which is a sort of abstract video game inventory mechanic -- I'm not asking if they can bring in every item within their sylladex as "one item" because that would be silly, but would an empty sylladex be acceptable as an item?
Hey! I have a question about canon AU characters. See, in Hetalia there's a genderswap AU basically called Axis Powers Nyotalia; it's separate from hetalia itself, and designed by Himaruya. A friend of mine and I were wondering if that would be an acceptable AU, and also were wondering if even though America was presently in the game, if Lady America would also be acceptable.
Sorry for the late reply. I've done a bit of research and I'd like to ask a couple of clarifying points, if I may, before I make a decision.
1. Do America and female America exist side-by-side as separate entities? As the information I found suggested that female America was male America, simply in a dream Estonia had.
2. How much canon (official, not fan-made) is there for the AU versions of the Hetalia characters?
I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS HAS BEEN COVERED ALREADY, but I can't remember ever reading something about it. I'm getting confused about the season, or if Haven even has changes in season. Is it winter or summer out? Is there any discernible way of telling?
"The weather in Haven is nearly always of a temperate climate (think South of France), so warm but not tropical. It doesn't seem to have seasons and remains this way all year round. Rain does fall, but it is very infrequent."
I apologize if this has already been answered, but what's the situation for characters who's development solely happens in a virtual reality MMORPG (for example, Sword Art Online or .hack)? Do they arrive as their real life self or do they retain their virtual appearance/armor/weapons/etc? In my case, if I apped Asuna from SAO, while she would've been functioning normally in virtual reality, her real self has been comatose and hospitalized for over two years.
Its like nika asks a billion questions week tbh. im considering doing a game transplant for this girl, sakura haruno from naruto. Her current canon point is chapter 311. now, im not exactly SET on the idea, and heck idk if ill go through with it, but i figured i should check in and see what options exist.
If i did the game transplant, could i, say, have her leave her game, go on in her canon up to a certain point, and then come to haven with all her memories of her previous game still intact? or would that be asking
No, I'm afraid I don't think that would work. The reason is that when characters leave most games, their memory of that game world disappears. So if she came direct from the other game, she would remember it. But she wouldn't if she came direct from her world, if that makes sense?
You could bring her in as a game transplant (direct from the other game) and then canon update her later on.
although i understand that canon ocs are not allowed, what about character that exist in the canon universe but said character's personality/appearance/etc is built around the player's decisions in-game. would they be allowed to be applied for?
examples being like commander shepherd from mass effect, the dragonborn from skyrim, the lone wanderer from fallout 3 -- those sorts of characters.
Yes, those sort of characters are absolutely allowed. In the application, just make sure to mention which choices have been made and how that builds the end personality!
I had a question about the 'summons' thing? I was wondering what's a case of summoning being a personal ability and what's not? Magik here is a teleporter, and her teleportation technique involves going into limbo and back out again, although most of the time in games I make sure to cut out the middle man and say she just ports around. However, recently she's been seen summoning things out of Limbo through her portals to use and control (this being the only example so far). Is that something she would be able to do or not in Haven? I don't have a preference either way! I just want to know so I know how to do my write up of her powers.
I would be happy for her to be able to pull just that one summons out of her portal! That way she's got the power, but as it's limited to that one (creature? set of giant flaming arms?) it's not too up in the air at what she can pull.
hi there! i have a question about OCs. i'm kind of hoping to app raziel here to haven, but he's an OC interpretation of angelic mythology. (as in, he's a former archangel who fled heaven because of war etc etc, now lives as a human.) raziel is an actual angel in the mythology, but i've obviously interpreted him to my heart's content, created a world/additional mythology/etc. would he be allowed here, or no?
So I have a question related to characters and their powers when they come to Haven. I'm considering bringing in this spoiler heavy being, and she's pretty much the series' equivalent of a god. Or close to it. How exactly would she be handled upon her arrival?
Another thing- would it be possible for her to arrive with a Piece of Eden, more specifically the Apple? The Apple has the ability to control the minds of humans when activated. I figure it could be a wonderful plot to use in the future, if it's allowed. :3c
There's no specific power cap on characters coming into Haven, but if something would break the game it would be handled on a case by case basis (as it has a few times already). So when applying, try to list all of the character's abilities as fully as you can and, if needed, a discussion can be made about how to handle them.
The Apple would be fine as an item to bring, but obviously permission would be needed before using it on any character.
A couple questions that I don't recall seeing answered here before.
For context, I'm considering two characters for this game. One of them becomes a vampire in the middle of the story, and the other loses her human body and becomes some kind of...bird thing along with gaining a whole host of reality-altering powers. If I apped them as humans but canon-updated them to their new forms, would that be applied in Haven, or would they only have the memories of that happening?
Additionally, I saw that old injuries and disabilities will remain upon arriving in Haven, but illness sustained immediately before arrival will be healed. What about a long-term, terminal illness? Since it's not suffered immediately before arrival, will it not be cured? Or will it continue to have an effect on the body without killing it?
For the first one, their bodies would canon update too, to become a vampire and a weird bird thing!
For the second one, terminal illnesses would be cured. It's more things like disabilities, or say an old football injury that flares up, that would be left behind. Any disease or injury that poses a threat to the life of a character would be nullified.
A quick question please! Could we have something added to the setting maybe detailing the flora/fauna of the place? I've been operating under the (perhaps misguided) conclusion that there's no fresh food, plants, or animals in Haven but I did see that you had mentioned earlier in the FAQ that some mice and rats could be found in limited quantity.
So, would it be safe to assume that there's minimal animals and plants in haven - perhaps of a more scrawny, sickly variety? Also, what about insects?
I don't think so, I'm sorry. That would sort of be like going back home and then reversing through time.
Something could be worked out with the memories, if it was wanted? Like memories past the previous canon point (to reverse update them) could be erased. So their personality would be as if they had been un-canon updated, but their body would remain as it was at their 'current' canon point, if that makes sense?
hi, i didn't see a rule about this but want to check before apping. since, sometimes, mods have preferences about it: is it alright if original character's have anime played by's?
quick question! i know the soil in haven west is toxic, but would haven north have things like seed packets for flowers etc available for characters to take back with them (or even plants to uproot)? if brought back with soil from haven north, would a small desk plant be sustainable?
questions about characters with previous game history!
a. if we obtain permission from the mun, can our character remember others upon being imported, or will they forget names and faces regardless?
b. for the development from a previous game, does "and how it shaped them" mean you want us to keep the history/development together, and the original personality separate?
a. As far as previous game history is concerned, your character will remember everything from their other game - other characters included. Though before breaking big reveals (like romances etc) it's courteous to ask the other player first.
Question about monsters in the subway tunnel. They could be from any canon, right? Some canons have wild animals as monsters that could be encountered. Can those be killed, brought back to Haven West, and cooked & eaten as fresh meat?
I see no reason why not, as long as it's not done too frequently. The monsters are always changing, so it wouldn't be feasible to find edible creatures too often.
