Applications

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!
The next processing date is Friday 11th October

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every two weeks, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. If you wish to request a specific apartment, please do so in the relevant part of the application. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Every attempt will be made to place a character in their chosen apartments, though this may not always be possible depending on the slots available.

Applications are open constantly, but are only processed every other Friday at 7PM EST. The Saturday following acceptance, an IC mingle log will be posted for characters to be introduced to the game.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old.

Background/History: As his pre-canon history is sketchy, I've tossed in some generally accepted fanon and bits of headcanon to flesh it out a bit. More detailed canon info can be located at Wikipedia. And since the wiki entry is awful, I'll elaborate:

Once upon a time the man called Glitch was a man named Ambrose. Ambrose was chief adviser to the Queen of the Outer Zone and had a reputation for being the smartest man in the land. While he dabbled in several areas he was primarily an inventor, and he designed many creations for the people of the O.Z. He was very close with the royal family, and the Queen thought of him as a friend rather than just a member of her staff.

Then it all went wrong. The queen's eldest daughter became possessed by the spirit of an ancient Witch, her younger daughter was sent to the Otherside (aka Kansas) for protection, and civil war broke out when the Witch began to seize power. The queen and Ambrose were eventually captured, and Ambrose was ordered to give up his plans for the Sun Seeder, a machine intended to slow the suns and expand the growing season to help the famine-ravaged land.

The Witch, however, wanted to use the machine to bring eternal darkness to the Outer Zone. Ambrose refused to help her, even after extensive torture, and so she had him headcased: removed part of his brain and sealed his head closed with a zipper - a procedure usually performed on criminals to make them docile prisoners of their own minds. With the brain matter containing the plans in her possession the Witch had no more need for Ambrose and so sent him out to fend for himself.

Soon he forgot his real name and began calling himself Glitch, as that is what he did - forget things, repeat himself - and it seemed fitting. For years he wandered the land, until one day he met a girl looking for home, a man who'd lost his heart, and another in need of courage. Together the four of them set out on a quest to defeat the Witch, return the queen to her throne, and along the way find out their missing were Within Them All Along.

Except for Glitch's half-a-brain, of course, which was kept in a jar in the witch's tower.

Personality:
Glitch is a man with no past who is constantly building his present and striving for a better future. He has been accused of being a wide-eyed optimist, and if he does tend to look for a silver lining to most situations it with good reason. He has seen true wickedness, and so has a preference for the bright side of things. He is prone to staring into space, wandering off, fidgeting, stating the obvious, and sometimes forgetting personal boundaries and tact. Well aware of his shortcomings Glitch has a self-deprecating sense of humor which can veer into sarcasm, and he loves the occasional bad pun.

It's not always sunshine and rainbows, however. Glitch gets snappish when he's frustrated, petulant and whiny when he doesn't get his way, and his mood can swing towards melancholy if he dwells on all he's lost. He also carries the burden of nearly ten years meandering a war-torn realm with the zipper on his head marking him as a criminal. Most of the memories from this time are buried, and if they emerge he tends to quickly forget what's put him out of sorts and rebounds as if he'd never felt sadness in his life. In this way his condition acts as a defense mechanism, one of the few good things to come of the headcasing.

His more minor resets or "glitches" can be annoying if one tries to hold a conversation with him. He can get stuck on a phrase and repeat it over and over until distracted via physical contact, or he can loop back on himself and start an entire discussion over again. If he is given a stable environment and a willing person or two to keep him on track, the glitches will be less frequent and he will improve dramatically. This does not mean he requires any sort of constant supervision as he managed to make it nearly ten years on his own and has developed a keen sense of self-preservation. Being underestimated will rile him.

Every now and then one of his glitches will briefly bring forth the old Ambrose parts of his personality and he will behave a bit like he did before being headcased. In these moments he is quieter, more lucid, with a touch more of the arrogance and general snobbery that comes with being a member of the nobility.

He loves logic, order, and structure but his mind is made out of chaos. Sorting through all of this takes up much of his mental energy, so he relies heavily on his instincts and intuition. He also relies on the people around him to give him context, and will take his cues from them.

By and large he is an extrovert. He wants to know people as much as he wants to know things, so if someone looks friendly he's more than likely to say hello. First impressions are key: if someone is friendly to him, he will respond positively. If someone is at all nasty, he will reciprocate, and if he can't quite figure a person out he will get flustered and unsure of himself.

With his whimsical, scattered nature it can be easy to forget that Glitch is a grown man with all the emotions and experiences that entails. He is also a gentleman to the marrow, and while he's forgotten most courtly etiquette he will still strive to be polite. His loyalty to the people he cares about is unwavering, and once you've become his friend he will stand by you through almost any hardship.

Abilities/Powers:
Once upon a time Glitch was an unparalleled genius. As an inventor he created the TDESPHTL - Tri-Dimensional Energy Stored Holographic Time Loop - and so he is familiar with holographic technology. He also invented a machine called the Sun Seeder which was designed to slow the suns and extend the growing season, indicating a very good grasp on astronomy and physics. He's a bit of an idiot-savant mechanic and enjoys taking things apart and putting them back together (whether or not they WORK after this is hit and miss). Glitch is a "fantastic dancer" with a knowledge of most classical, courtly styles. His excellent sense of rhythm aids him in hand-to-hand (or rather his-foot-to-your-head) combat, and he is quite skilled at a fighting form that resembles taekwondo. No, really. Also he can ride a horse (hey, it's a skill) and claims to be a good fence climber (which is probably a more useful skill).

Of course he's very liable to forget all of this at any given moment because of the whole only possessing half-a-brain thing. Speaking of: there is a metal zipper on his head, a sort of "scarlet letter" all headcases get to mark their status. It is anchored at his hairline and runs to the back of his skull where the tab is. This zipper can be opened and one can, if one wants to, peer into his cranium. Glitch would very, very much rather you didn't.

Sample Entry:
Sample post from Luceti here!

Sample Entry Two: (recycled from Taxon)

There was a fine line between hiding somewhere and being hidden somewhere, and Glitch was in the precarious position of not knowing which side of it he was on. All he could do was keep reminding himself to stay still and be quiet, a plan which most of him was happy to comply with. His nose had objections as he was hiding/hidden in a very dusty crawlspace, but if he kept still then the dust would stay where it was and not make him sneeze.

He wished he could remember if the people who lived in the house knew he was there. That would make everything so much simpler. If they did, and were keeping him hidden, then there had to be a reason they'd left him alone so long...long enough for the spider he'd been watching to finish her web. It was a pretty little thing, a neat orb cast between floorboards and a support beam.

Glitch let himself get lost in the details, words like radial and spinneret tickling the empty edge of his mind, the context right there but the full meaning muted. The web was artwork, not deathtrap, and in a flash he recalled dew-beaded silk in the light of the first sun, jewel doves stirring in the lilac bushes, the smell of bread from the kitchen windows-

The floorboards creaked and Glitch gasped, the palace gardens immediately gone from his memory. He had to escape he had to- no, be still, be quiet, if he was found he'd be...it would be bad. There was more creaking, and the soft thump of footsteps, and he covered his mouth with his hand, his dust-covered hand and his poor nose did not like that at all.

The thump-creak stopped directly above him. His eyes watered as he fought to keep from sneezing, even as he solemnly thought that it was involuntary and merciful Ozma he was done for now, he was sure of it!

The trap door lifted, destroying the spider's web, and the farmer's wife peered down at him with furrowed brow.

"He's gone," she said, and offered a hand to help him up. "And you'd best go too before he gets back, all right?"

Glitch tried to respond, but all he managed was an explosive sneeze.

Personality: ❝This isn't real... it's just a dream. This can't be happening to me! It can't be!❞
"Fiona is very much the quiet type who masks her inner strength." From the beginning of the game, Fiona comes off as sheltered; she's timid and shy, a very quiet, soft-spoken girl that mostly keeps to herself. That's not to say that Fiona isn't a friendly girl; it's actually quite the opposite case. Her sheltered life causes her to fall back on her manners, and she's actually quite kind by default. Take her first encounter with Daniella, for instance. Fiona wakes up to terrifying and disgusting conditions, yet when she sees the maid, she keeps her composure and politely asks where she is and how she got there. She's a bit of a bleeding heart too, especially when animals are concerned, and will go out of her way to help those in need. This is exactly what happens when she comes across Hewie tied up to a tree. With Fiona there’s a strange mixture of maturity and naivety—more often than not, she seems more mature than someone of her age, but there are times when there’s an innocence about her that can also be traced back to her sheltered upbringing. There's an underlying sweetness to her that's almost ever-present. The game manual goes as far as saying "…when she smiles, she smiles from her heart and her charm easily wins people over."

Actually, there isn't really a time in the game at all when Fiona uses anger or bitterness in a situation, despite all of the horrible things that are done to her (save the end where she calls Lorenzo a "bastard," but even then she doesn’t say it aloud). You can see this after the final fight with Daniella, where Fiona observes the maid’s corpse and has thoughts about feeling bad for her. Never mind the fact that this same maid had come after her with a giant shard of glass just moments before. There's also when Riccardo fell off the top of the Water Tower&mdash he staggers off of it after being attacked by Hewie, and right before he plunges off the edge, Fiona raises a hand as if she wants to help him at the last minute, obviously feeling guilty. Any other person most likely would have let him fall without hesitation, considering all that he does to her/plans to do to her (though, to be fair, this is the antagonist that shares her deceased father's face, which may be part of the reasoning for her hesitation). It's also in this that you see that Fiona's pretty hard on herself, and the idea of taking someone’s life upsets her. Even while the deaths of the stalkers seem to happen out of sheer coincidence (ie: falling off of towers, falling in lava pits, getting impaled by falling glass), Fiona considers herself a killer and hates the castle for making her resort to violence.

Nevertheless, Fiona makes up for her lacking physical prowess with her quick wit and mental agility. This is where her “inner strength” lies. Underneath her quiet exterior there is a strong-willed, fiercely determined girl. There are a number of times where this is demonstrated, such as the cutscene where she’s stuck with Debilitas in the library and makes a quick decision of slamming into a bookcase to crush and incapacitate him only after two thwarted attempts to escape. With her commentary throughout the game, it's easy to see that Fiona is well-educated and quick to catch on to key concepts. You can also see that she's quite artistic and has a keen eye for detail. It's even hinted that she's a pianist when you have her observe a piano, and she's very art-savvy when it comes to critiquing the many pieces around the castle. She doesn't like to skip over information (unless it’s abundantly clear that it won’t help her, or is written in a language she doesn’t understand), and will consciously repeat said information or state obvious facts in order to digest them. Being stranded in a giant castle where everyone is after you really doesn’t leave much room for mistakes. Regardless, her quick thinking has saved both Hewie and herself from misery quite a few times, and assisted her in both effectively hiding from and defeating those that wish to harm her.

Due to the fact that Belli castle is basically batshit, players get to see Fiona's mindset pushed to its limits. While being chased for an extended amount of time, after taking a certain amount of damage, or even by witnessing something disturbing, Fiona's panic will increase heartily. This is shown in a few ways; Fiona will start stumbling when she runs, the screen will start to desaturate and there are lapses and blurs. Once enough panic has built up, she'll go into what's called "Panic Mode". Initiated by a terror-filled scream, Fiona literally loses it— frantically running without pause, even if that means running smack into a wall. She's extremely vulnerable in this state (if knocked to the ground in Panic Mode, there’s a 50/50 chance that one hit will do her in). This also goes to say that her time spent at the castle will have left Fiona a little traumatized and wary of people... she will likely suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, especially since Hewie won't be with her.

Toboe | Wolf's Rain | Not reserved

Character Name: Toboe
Canon: Wolf's Rain
Canon Point: He'll be from post-death
Background/History: Here and Here!
Personality:

Toboe's considered the kid of the group, still a juvenile wolf while the rest of the group are all adults. This reflects in his behavior too, as he's more energetic, playful, inexperienced, and especially naive. He has trouble fending for himself, can be a little too trusting of others, and likes being coddled. He also has a childlike arrogance to him as well, claiming that he's fine when he's hurt or tired and pushing himself even when he needs to rest. He also hates being treated like a kid, and will get angry and protest whenever the group feels like they should slow down on his behalf.

Toboe is also the most timid of his pack, freezing up with fear or hesitating before he does something dangerous. He's scared of cats and when he first tries to find food on his own he's easily chased away after being pecked by crows. When confronted with a wolf hunter, he doesn't try to fight or run, but stands there bracing himself to get shot. He'll often need a little push first before trying to make a risky jump and when one of his pack gets captured, instead of following or howling for help, he runs back to tell the others instead, which proves that Toboe doesn't like to confront danger head-on.

There are times when Toboe overcomes his timid nature and risks his life, such as when his pack was under attack from a giant walrus. While at first he's too scared to move up, he suddenly snaps when he sees his friends getting hurt and charges forward to sink his teeth into the walrus, only letting go when the walrus finally bleeds to death. Another instance is when he and Tsume are captured by Jagura and they realize that Cheza could be hurt, which prompts him and Tsume to throw themselves against the bars of their cell to break free, even knowing that doing so could seriously injure them in their desperation to escape.

Unlike most wolves, Toboe is perfectly content living as a domesticated animal. Having lived with a human all his life, he's reluctant to have to live in the wild. After Granny dies, Toboe starts to seek out a new owner as a replacement when he comes across a human girl, and immediately tries to win over her affection. His idea of paradise involves seeing Granny again and having her take care of him, and he even temporarily leaves his pack in order to live with native humans who live alongside animals as equals, to which Toboe claims is his idea of a paradise. Even up until his death he keeps trying to find an owner that will take care of him, going as far to tell the wolf hunter that tried to kill him in the beginning, that he wanted him to go to paradise with them so that he could be by his side. He even offers the wolf hunter his body heat when Toboe finds him freezing to death in the snow, knowing that the wolf hunter would try to kill him if he woke up with him there. Also, having lived the life of a domesticated animal, Toboe is more willing to approach a human and tends to be more trusting and forgiving towards them.

Out of all of the members of his pack, Toboe is the most social of the group which has a lot to do with the fact that he hates to be alone. In fact he hates to be alone so much that he immediately latches onto a fellow wolf, Tsume, when said wolf rescues him. Despite Tsume wanting nothing to do with him, Toboe follows him around and tries to befriend him anyway. Likewise, the human girl he meets while trying to find food, he follows around and tries to worm his way into being her pet when she feeds him. Because of his need to always be around others, he tends to be the glue that holds the rest of the pack together. Whenever the pack tries splitting up, Toboe is usually the only one who gets upset about it and tries to talk them into working together again. Because of this, Toboe doesn't care whether he's in the company of wolves or humans, as long as he has others by his side.

Abilities/Powers:

Human Form: Toboe can create an illusion to make himself look like a 14-year-old boy to blend in with human society. It's a pretty solid illusion for the most part, except that in order to use his "hands" he actually has to use his teeth which can sometimes break the illusion, and he still casts the shadow of a wolf when he walks.
Telepathy: Wolves can speak to other humans and animals without moving their mouths. While in their human form, it just looks like they're speaking normally.
Increased strength/endurance: The wolves in Wolf's Rain tend to be a lot stronger then normal wolves, even being able to withstand injuries that would normally be fatal and being able to jump seemingly impossible distances.
Fast healing: During a full moon, wolves like Toboe can heal a lot quicker then normal, taking only a few hours recover from severe injuries.

Sample Entry: Here is a sample from another game!
Sample Entry Two:

Upon waking up, the first thing Toboe expected to see was fields of white flowers and his Granny waiting for him with open arms. What he wasn't expecting was a loud buzzing sound and...a bed? It was a lot softer and more comfortable then where he collapsed out in the desert, but how did he end up in a place like this?

In fact, where was he?

Toboe was naive in a lot of ways, even though he refused to admit it, but he knew that gunshot he took to the back was fatal. The last thing he remembered was collapsing next to Quent, exhausted, weak, and aware that he was dying. Toboe had no idea what came next after death, but this couldn't be it. This wasn't the paradise he imagined. Maybe he really didn't die after all? In fact, maybe they brought him to a nearby city, and his pack was nearby and waiting for him to wake up. But that didn't explain why he was only picking up the scent of humans, or why the city outside looked so empty.

As disoriented as he feels, he's quick to climb out of bed, wobbling a bit as he lands on all fours. After doing a little bit of sniffing around, he'll venture outside cautiously. He's not picking up the scent of any other wolves, which makes him nervous already, but he doesn't give up finding them right away.

"Tsume? Hey, Kiba! Hige! I'm awake now! Where did you all go?"

Well, he knows only one way to call his packmates. Completely forgetting that this could alert any nearby threats, Toboe leans back his head and lets out a loud howl. If his pack were nearby, they would hear him for sure. If not...

Well, Toboe didn't want to think that he was here all alone.

Character Name: Dad Egbert
Canon: Homestuck
Canon Point: After his death
Background/History: http://mspaintadventures.wikia.com/wiki/Dad
Previous Game History: NA
Personality: If there is one thing that Dad Egbert is known for it is his love for his son John Egbert. Dadbert constantly dotes and praises his son, much to John’s dislike. Dad has various ways of showing his affection for his son, such as baking him cakes, cookies, or pulling the occasional prank. Dad has taken up an interest in harlequin dolls, pictures, mannequins and similar artifacts. This is an attempt for Dad to get closer to his son after seeing the drawings on John’s walls.

Such drawings say things as dumb kid or stupid with arrows pointing to where John would be sleeping. These were written by John’s subconscious and cannot be seen by him, but are very visible to those around him. Dad tries to alter John's views of John's being by telling him he is proud of him, or doting on him constantly, possibly cracking a joke or throwing the occasional pie in John’s face as a prank. Dad does not wish to see John upset and he definitely does not want to see John putting himself down. So he tries to cheer up John where he can, spoil him. It is speculated that Dad rarely punishes John and would add to reason behind John’s sheltered life.

Aside from caring for John, Dad has other attributes, being a well off and profiting business man is one of them. After John crashed into his life, quite literally, and his joke shop got destroyed. Dad took up the life of a businessman to support himself and his son. While the meteor that crashed killed Dad’s birth mother, he couldn't help but raise the child that was in the crater. This shows Dad has an instinct in parental care and the need to help others. He is also rather business oriented, making his devotion to his profession true in his mannerisms, always wearing a suit, and own bedroom. Which adorns various manly trinkets devoted to business. This isn?t to say he is entirely serious in nature.

Dad has the ability to joke around and live for the moment. It is canon fact that he has been banned from the grounds of Cirque Du Soliel and one has to wonder just what nonsense caused this sort of dismissal. I like to think that before John he was considered a bit wild with his pranks. He was not opposed to placing a stray whoopee cushion in public or using a pie to the face as a form of greeting. Of course this mellowed out with the loss of his mother and a new son.

It is in his room that we find that Dad has a dedication to his son in another way. Dad, ever since the crash of the meteor that destroyed the Betty Crocker factory, has been researching meteors and where they have landed. Dad isn’t one to forget such things of great influence or go without questioning them.

Being a businessman and a caring parent aside, dadbert is rather secluded. We can see this by the fact that he tried to hide his real life from john. Sure John knew of his business manly job, but not of his constant research on rogue meteors crashing or that of how his nana really died, ect. Of course Dadbert isn’t to blame, telling a young child that you came from a meteor that just so happened to kill your grandmother, wouldn’t be good parenting. However, Dad is still secluded in nature wishing to focus more on the now and taking care of his son then his own woes, not wanting to let John see him focusing on the bad for fear that it might upset John. In fact John picked up some of this attribute. It is shown in the way John handles sorrow or upsetting situations. Like his father he pushes through things for the better of others. Never losing his smile or wishing to think about the bad, for it may give the wrong idea to his friends.

Dad Egbert is also rather strong willed and has the gift of psychical strength. When he is captured by the imps, not only does he let them capture him as the ultimate prank, but he manages to escape them and cause a commotion easily. From lifting safes to punching ogres, he is well handed in combat.

Abilities/Powers: As far as his abilities expand to: good business man, skilled fighter with fists and various weapons, he is strong (at time lifting a safe and punching an orgre), and a skilled prankster.

Sample Entry: (Taken from another game sample, hope that’s okay?)

[Walking off the train in formal attire should be a routine he was used to by this point. Sadly today was not the case and for Mr. Egbert he found this setting unfamiliar and discomforting to him. Whoever had played such a prank on him was good, he would admit. However this was not fair play.

The good news, whomever they were, they had decided to give a gift and it was some communicator of sorts.

Presently the man was inspecting the device. He turns it over once or twice before deciding to click one of the buttons. Fortunately it was video and he spoke when he noticed the red light blinking, followed by his reflection on the screen.]

Hello, I would like to ask for assistance. I never thought the afterlife would be something…so humble. Are there any angels that might be able to explain this situation or demons? Though I am uncertain what it was that would land me in that sort of setting.

[It was odd to him that such a thought would pass his mind. Was this a punishment? For the moment he recalled what memories he could and honestly could find nothing that would land him in a eternal pit fire setting as hell.

Of course…this was not the point. For now he needed to obtain the right information.]

And a short thread on dear_mun as well

http://dear-mun.dreamwidth.org/4235938.html?thread=133115554#cmt133115554

Sample Entry Two: The man found himself in an alien setting. He was of average size and sported a pipe in one hand and the communicator in the other. No sound came from him as he looked over the device. He rubbed it between his fingers and flips it over carefully. When he finds that there was no danger to the device he simply pockets it and walked on.

A look of puzzled distress is plastered on his features as he took in his surroundings. With a soft clap sounding from the steps of his shoes, he stopped once more and thinks for a moment to inspect the watch closer. The thought is quickly discarded as he puts a puff to his pipe and lets a soft sigh escape him as the familiar taste of tobacco wafts over him. He would be sure to find some sort civilian to address later.

Inside he was concerned, while on the outside he was calm. It was best to show calm when in a situation you knew naught about. Maybe if he was to go into one of these businesses he could find a certain being of help. However, he did not wish to be rude. So with his decision made he calmly put out his pipe, placing it into his pocket for the moment. A quick movement is made to straighten his tie before he walked into the closest bar and looked for a potential fellow to ask for assistance.

Character Name: John Egbert
Canon: Homestuck
Canon Point: After the one-year time-skip in the Prospit ship
Background/History: http://mspaintadventures.wikia.com/wiki/John_Egbert
Previous Game History: John previously resided within another city, picking up some... interesting skills. Upon his first arrival there, John was brought in by a young woman known as Elizabetheta Buckley, who owned a steampunk shop, selling clockwork assistants. She was eager to take on an assistant in a city that knew nothing about her art, as well as show some hospitality to the lost boy. Starting out as an errand boy, he cleaned the shop in exchange for lessons, using his natural knack for puzzle-solving to pick up the building skills necessary. He’s been learning the art for a year, and can make his own small, shoddy clockwork assistants if given the proper supplies. He also grew rather attached to the woman, mourning her disappearance, and carrying her lessons on with notes from around the shop. He gave up on her return, though, and holds deep resentments.
John has also managed to develop relationships with those from his own universe that managed to be trapped as well. Going nearly insane from the solitude and barred progress in Sburb, he quickly bonded to any of the same universe that wandered in. He lived very closely with Dirk, and considers him to be a close friend, learning a bit more about the Alpha session from him. He's also become close with Vriska, only to have her disappear after returning from his one-year absence in which he 'forgot', leaving him with some very conflicting feelings. Such a long time within the other City also led to some unlikely blooming relationships. A consistent roommate became Davesprite, in a very close bond where John was simply glad to have such familiar kin, and Davesprite worked to keep the other safe. After a few months and getting to know each other closely, the two ended up dating recently before John disappeared from the City. John has taken to the relationship with some confliction, new to the idea both of dating another guy, as well as dating in general. He’s become incredibly adjusted to having such a close relationship by his side, and will be unsure what to do without it.

John Egbert | Homestuck | Reserve | 2/3

[personal profile] wehaveliv_doff 2012-10-01 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Every story has a hero - the force made to rise above all else, to prove themselves, to guide the world back into peace. It’s a role of duty and responsibility, obligations and example. John Egbert, however, was only thirteen when his story began; a thirteen-year-old, normal boy who liked pranks, bad movies, and Nicholas Cage. He played games, talked with friends, and spent time on the computer. He was hardly an exemplary Savior of his session. What he was, though, was a generally good kid, who did the best he can. But after two years of a game that destroyed everything he knew, his story has been a coming-of-age tale. One his is still growing into, but the progress is apparent enough.
There's a certain naïvete that John is slowly beginning to shake. He has not quite seen all the world can offer. Yet he's begun to cast off the belief that life can last forever. He's begun to question decisions he's made in the past, and how truly important these were. Vriska, for example - in the day they played of the game, he was fully under the belief he might have cared for. And while he doesn't deny she could be a good friend, he question how really ready he was to develop real feelings for a girl he'd just met. He's begun to expand his views, as he grows. Much of this is still about one trait that has not disappeared - the fact that he likes to keep a very solid focus upon those whom he interacts with and treasures as being close to. Friends are the absolutely most important, making up life as he knows it. He closes out all else, placing them upon a pedestal of praise. He has a hope in them, though it's begun to not be quite enough, as he desires contact, something to prove they're as close as he wants to believe in so badly of them.
John has a craving for that which he doesn't have anymore, which extends and equal importance to family and familial relationships. His desire to be with his friends is essentially an extension to this. John want to open to them, want to see them again. He can be very open with his feelings towards friends as a semi-default. When first meeting Rose in person he’s immediately friendly and close on a very personal level. He does quickly excuse this as ‘being nervous’, and while this excuses some social awkwardness, it still does not change the fact that reactions are of an immediate ‘business’ over the other person’s presence. He cares about them, he wants to do something about. And despite the fact that these friends are people he’s never met, he’s still managed to make the deep attachment to DESIRE this development so. He's clung so easily to others through friendship, and brings forth a bond of trust.
This may not always before the best, though, to backtrack. John has proven that he can be almost too trusting on those that it may not be wisest too, though seems to at least have the good judgment to give that sort of chance to those who deserve it. It has, of course, led him astray on occasion - and in one case, death, when following Terezi’s directions to a doomed time line. In the reverse of that, it’s trust in another friend that saves him from that fate, and forgiving and trusting Terezi for what never happened. It’s an endearing trait that he returns full heartedly, being dependable to all of his friends. He comes second from his friend role, into that of a Leader, out for the good of his team, which he is keen to keep at. And for the good of that, he keeps his own safe mind set.
John is still an optimistic boy, who has taken to his task as Leader against the Apocalypse with pumped enthusiasm. While things have become bleak, John has always kept his team facing forward. He himself seems to believe in these sorts of ideals with his every being. The way that John marches forward is with almost a sense of desperation and only more naivete. What he has been handed in the bleak situation, he has gone past, with that deep sort of belief that all might turn out for the better. These sorts of things have been numbered to the point where one would be expected to give up - and where it might even be more sensible to do so. John has died for this belief, and yet still picked up again with the same enthusiasm upon reaching God Tier.
Not to say John doesn't have his share of negativity, and negative points. As established previously, a large, important part of John's life is friends. He treasures them, cares for them, does his best to keep positive for them, yes. He's proven that they can change him. But, as with any young boy, there are some things that just... cannot be changed. With that previously mentioned naivete, yet to entirely fade, and his own constantly face-forward attitude of assuredness, there is a lack of a consequence, always that tinge of selfishness.
John may not always be the most appreciative of what he has, at least not in the way he shows it. Friends have on occasion received the blunt of more negative traits. When speaking to Dave, John's tone takes a heavy drop, becoming almost an exasperation. He even fits in a few jabs, calling Dave on his 'nerdy raps', using general insulting terminology that goes a little lower than the 'familiar friends' belt. And in his lone dwelling recently with Jade, he's thrown his own share of barbs at her now. Yet to John, it seems all play. Not that his friends show any sign of being affected by it, which might only make it worse. It effects a manner of impatience and entitlement to how they should act, losing complete patience with, again, Dave, and straight-up ignoring him, as well as speaking ill of him to others.
That lack of patience only kicks in tenfold when it comes to outside his circle of friends. Before befriending the trolls (and even in the early stages of ‘friendship’), John from time to time has a general aggressive stance towards them, moreso, oddly enough, than even Dave’s approach. While Dave counter-trolls with ironic ‘kindness’, John isn’t afraid to straight-up insult on various accounts from Karkat’s general being, to Terezi’s blindness.
All-in-all, he's not a bad kid. He's simply growing. It's really what all this is about - growing into what he needs to.
Abilities/Powers: John Egbert has achieved God Tier, a status attainable in the game Sburb by means of killing the physical body and allowing one’s Dreamself to rise to consciousness. It increases abilities beyond those normally attainable. As an Heir of Breath, on his own, John has the abilities to control breezes and such for use of levitation and fighting. These increased tenfold once ascending, allowing him to control tornadoes and vast storms. He is also immortal, only able to die if killed in a manner that is Just or Heroic. Otherwise, he’ll be out for a few minutes, reviving afterwards with no sign of the damage.
Also: as a member of the Homestuck Universe, John has access to the captchalogue system, which allows him to carry many items of varying size without a problem, as well as immediate access to his weapon. Until he procurs a new one, or finds new items to carry, this will be inapplicable.

Character Name: Tohru Adachi
Canon: Persona 4
Canon Point: December 5th, 2011. Shortly after the Investigation Team uncovers the truth at Tatsumi Memorial Hospital and immediately after Adachi escapes into the Midnight Channel.
Background/History: Persona 4 | Adachi's Wiki Information

Personality: Imagine, if you will, that one bumbling coworker of yours. You know the one. The kinda awkward one who always seems to invite himself into your conversations, sharing information with you that really doesn't need to be shared? The innocuous one who tries his damnedest to act confident and to be competent in what he does, yet never seems to get much respect from you or your peers. The manipulative one who is secretly responsible for the murders of two innocent people and the endangerment of countless others in---

Wait. What?

No, you heard me correctly. This, ladies and gentlemen, is Tohru Adachi. Beneath this unassuming, derpy, cabbage-loving exterior beats the heart of a madman. Or at the very least, a man who's incredibly fucking angry with the world he finds himself in. Not very much is known about Adachi's early life (or even about his early career as a police officer in a big city), but after some pretty heavy-hitting revelations that come late in the game of Persona 4, it's evident that Adachi didn't become a policeman to protect or serve. Why did he become a policeman? So he could legally carry a gun, he says. He goes on to explain that after an eternity of "studying his ass off," he was supposed to be "the best of the best," but an undisclosed incident had led to Adachi's superiors reassigning him to the police department in Inaba, a small rural town in the middle of nowhere.

But alas, the move to Inaba really wasn't what Adachi needed at all. To be more specific, it was the strange power he acquired upon his arrival in town that he really didn't need. Gaining a Persona, as well as the ability to access the bizarre world of the Midnight Channel within his own television, was a full-course meal for Adachi's ego, cranking his issues of entitlement all the way up to eleven. And unfortunately for the first two victims of the Midnight Channel---one Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi---it was Adachi's personal entitlement that led to their untimely demises in the first place. Adachi, assigned to be Yamano's bodyguard in the midst of a major scandal, had nursed an unwelcome crush for the female reporter, and when he didn't get his way with her, he tried to force her hand and get exactly what he wanted the hard way. The ensuing struggle led to her accidentally stumbling into the world behind the TV, and to Adachi discovering yet another new power. It was only days later that he attempted to get his way with Konishi, a high-school student he was meant to interview, as well before she rebuked him and he retaliated, shoving her into the TV as well. He feels very little shame about what he did, however, labeling both women as gold-diggers, petty bitches who deserved what they got in the end.

But did he stop there? Oh, no. After the disgraced Taro Namatame was revealed to have similar access to the Midnight Channel, Adachi turned one simple phone conversation around and manipulated Namatame into trapping more victims inside the TV, carrying out more of Adachi's dirty work all for the sake of his own entertainment. There's very little reason for Adachi to have done what he did apart from the fact that he could do it, and that it was "fun." So really, don't be fooled by this New World Fool. Much like the reversed Fool Arcana, Adachi is impulsive (making very rash decisions that lead to a mess of problems for the town of Inaba and the world at large), obsessed (particularly with his little game of cat-and-mouse and with a good deal of women he meets, much to their discomfort), frivolous (hardly taking the ramifications of his actions seriously), and just all around lacking in terms of any real foresight or human decency.

Abilities/Powers: Adachi can summon a Persona---a spectral figure that represents his true self---known as Magatsu Izanagi. It was bestowed upon him when he first arrived in Inaba, and since then has grown to Level 73. In addition to a high HP count of 4200, as well as a resistance to Light and Dark skills altogether, Magatsu Izanagi has the following skills:

Vorpal Blade - Inflicts heavy Physical damage on all enemies.
Ziodyne - Inflicts heavy Electric damage on one enemy.
Maziodyne - Inflicts heavy Electric damage on all enemies.
Garudyne - Inflicts heavy Wind damage on one enemy.
Magarudyne - Inflicts heavy Wind damage on all enemies.
Power Charge - The next normal attack, physical skill, or Almighty physical attack will be 2.5 times greater in power. Self.
Mudoon - 50% chance of instant death from the power of Darkness on one enemy.
Dekaja - Cancels stat increase on all enemies.
Heat Riser - Increases an ally's Attack, Defense and Agility for 3 turns.
Evil Smile - 25% chance of inflicting the Fear ailment on all enemies.
Foolish Whisper - 25% chance of inflicting the Silence ailment on all enemies.
Ghastly Wail - Instantly kills all enemies suffering from Fear ailment.
Atom Smasher - Inflicts medium Physical damage on all enemies up to 2 times with a chance of fear.

Apart from being able to summon his Persona, Adachi has also demonstrated several other bizarre powers and abilities both in game and anime canon. These aren't really powers he would display out in the open, mind, but he can interact with televisions and pass through them into another world entirely. And inside the Midnight Channel, the world is Adachi's playground. He can create Shadows of himself, lifelike duplicates meant to confuse and distract his opponents. He can teleport in the blink of an eye. He can distort the TV world into something sick, corrupt, and twisted. And finally, he can coexist with Shadows to the point that none would dare attack him, probably, he believes, because they share the same ultimate goal. Though, really, that may have something to do with the malevolent presence that still lies dormant within Adachi:

Ameno-sagiri. A powerful, godlike entity who shares its desires with mankind. And if mankind wishes to end its suffering and remain blind to the truth of their everyday lives, then Ameno-sagiri will stop at nothing to envelop the world in a thick fog and leave mankind without its humanity.

Sample Entry Two: (Recycled!)

By now, Adachi's no stranger to this town. It was a bit of a weird adjustment at first, but hey. He can't say he isn't used to that sort of thing by now.

See, things have a habit of never quite going his way.

One second, he's a rising star with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. The next, he's transferred---like a disease---to some hick town in the middle of nowhere.

And only months after Adachi finds a way to spice up his otherwise mediocre life and have a little fun, his game's cut short. He's dragged, yet again, to an unfamiliar place where he'd rather not be.

Same shit. Different shithole.

Character Name: Daniel Cain
Canon: Re-Animator
Canon Point: Post-first movie; A few weeks after the 'Miskatonic Massacre'
Background/History: wiki page
Previous Game History: N/A.

Personality:

Well-respected among his colleagues as well as considered to be one of Miskatonic’s brightest students, Dan has got a pretty good future set for himself. On a surface level, Dan is your typical ambivert; he is polite and reserved yet does not completely hide from the outside world. He is an approachable person, it's not his style to blow people completely off. The relationships he has with others are ones he doesn’t take for granted. He wouldn’t burn bridges or manipulate others all for the sake of self-interest. Dan is also kind of a dork, the type that would make a fool out himself but then completely regrets it once everyone and their mothers find out. Some might get a vibe off from him, at first glance, that he is a smug, brooding jock whose only purpose of being a med student is to mooch off the free ride his parents fit the bill for. But really, the whole smug act isn’t his thing. Despite being considered as one of Miskantonic’s best students, he doesn’t let that get to his head. Dan is aware that there is still much that he doesn’t know about the world.

As intelligent as Dan is, he has a tendency to act first, think later. Even though Dan is not a violent person, he would not be afraid to defend others even if that does mean resorting to brute force. And when it comes to the matter of death, he doesn't take it very well. The patient could flat-line and the doctors would call it in but Dan would still be administering CPR. There is a pure, optimistic side to Dan that makes him afraid to see others lose to their own mortality. You can see the look of dread on his face when there is nothing he can do. Overall, his down to earth nature shows that Dan is a person with good intentions which, unfortunately, becomes the strings attached to him to be manipulated.

If Herbert is the cold, logical side of the partnership then Dan would be considered as the conscious, sympathetic side that brings some kind of humanity into all of this madness. When it comes to bedside manners, Dan gets an A+. As a medical student, he is good at understanding the pain that people go through. While Herbert keeps himself locked inside his basement working on his experiments, Dan is upstairs being…well a person. He doesn't let his medical career completely consume his life. Even though he is seduced into the world of bringing the dead back to life he doesn't fall into morbid curiosity. The corpses of the dead are not just disposable specimens. While he is hesitant of the consequences of they're doing, he tries to hold onto some hope that this will be worth it.

Among being manipulable as one of his weaknesses, he isn’t the most confident person in the world. While Dan has the potential to take on a leadership role, he just ends up following others. He can take a high-pressured situation head on but not without feeling reluctant. That doesn’t mean he lacks self-esteem. But he can’t help having other taking control of the situation.

Abilities/Powers:

None. He’s as human as you can human humanly be but one ‘ability’ to highlight is that Dan is medically trained so he can deal in situations that require first aid or other medical-type emergencies.

Sample Entry: Here!
Sample Entry Two: (recycled)

It was like being an undergrad all over again.

Instead of being surrounded by a group of disgruntled people, he was surrounded by an array of different species that gave disgruntled a whole new meaning. Dan found it best to keep to himself and speak only when spoken to dodge the rage. There was the occasional goof up every now and then. Like that one time he managed to break three dishes in a row which caused him to get a tongue lashing worse than his mother. It took him a minute to wipe all that spray spit off his face. But with each dish he scrubbed, it was one step closer to a hot meal. At least it wasn’t ramen noodles.

He had to ask himself how he even got here in the first place. Dan wasn’t much of a believer of divine intervention until Herbert West stepped into his life. Then things just seem to spiral more and more out of control. And now here he is, Daniel Cain, former medical student turned professional busboy to serve the entire inter-dimensional populous.

After a long day of non-stop dishwashing, Dan flopped himself onto his stiff cot. He was overridden with exhaustion but just could not fall asleep for the life of him. All he could do was lie on his back and stare at the dank ceiling above him.

Nathan Seymour/Fire Emblem | Tiger & Bunny

[personal profile] fireinthehero 2012-10-02 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Colin
Contact Info: plurk: brownmedal
Other Characters Played: N/A
Preferred Apartment: None.

Character Name: Nathan Seymour
Canon: Tiger & Bunny
Canon Point: Post-Final episode.
Background/History: The setting of Tiger & Bunny can be summed up here, but as for Nathan himself:

Nathan Seymour is a superhero, while also being a fulltime business owner. His unique status allows him to sponsor himself as a hero, and he dedicates himself to both aspects with a fierce intensity. Unfortunately, being a side character, very little is known about Nathan's past outside of this, and we also haven't seen him experience a kind of personal journey that Kotetsu or Barnaby have, or even just some time just focusing on him, like Karina and Pao-Lin. As such, most of his time in the show is spent reacting to, or working with, others. He is generally the go-to confidant and counselor of the heroes, a listening ear and a mature voice. So instead of being the one going through his own challenges, he's there to help everyone else through theirs.

We do know he's been heroing for awhile, though, and that he inherited his wealth and the company, though didn't allow it to make him lazy.

Personality: Nathan is an interesting person, in how many different roles he can play, while all of them remain utterly true to himself. That is to say, Nathan never puts on a 'mask' - superhero mask notwithstanding.

At first glance, there's something distinctly obvious about Nathan: He is fabulous. Openly gay, and flamboyantly so, Nathan dresses himself up in hot pink and bright white, and wearing high heels everywhere but the gym, he loves to stand out in a crowd. He tends to speak with a feminine accent to his words, whatever the subject.

But of course, that layer is not all there is to him. On the rarely shown flipside, during the very few times Nathan is incredibly angry - be it the destruction of his car, or something else unforgivable - Nathan will drop into a deep, intense voice, that makes it clear he's nothing to fuck with. However, this part of him only crops up during the right circumstances. Nathan is more known for being something of a familiar, trustworthy figure - someone everyone can go to with their problems. Patient and understanding, though he can spot hypocrisies and people putting on tough fronts with ease. Considered by most of the heroes to be one of the more 'mature' figures, and a bit of family glue that keeps everyone together, his greatest strength here is how much he honestly cares for all of his friends.

Then, there's that other big aspect of Nathan: He's a massive workaholic! Though he loves to have fun, Nathan believes in the value of hard work in every part of his life. In business, in keeping fit, in being a hero. Certainly, he loves to put on a show while he does all of it, but his schedule is packed to the brim every day, and making an opening in it can be difficult indeed. The man keeps things to a tight clock.

Superhero, businessman, confidant, and doing all of it while never losing his sense of humor, Nathan might be defined simply by how well adjusted he is, despite everything on his plate. If you want someone who has their life together, Nathan's your man.

Abilities/Powers: Nathan is a pyrokinetic, and can generate intense heat in the orange/red levels - he's outmatched here by a fellow NEXT, Lunatic, who can generate blue level flames. However, Nathan's greatest skill isn't the heat itself he can generate, but the level of precise control with it, to the point that he often spells out words with his flame before shooting it out like a fireball, or turning it into a tight shield that melts bullets.

Aside from that, he's also a skilled hero who can fight crime hand to hand, while in high heels, showing an incredible amount of balance and finesse. As part of this job, he also has experience in search and rescue techniques (CPR and the like).

Beyond all that, he's a talented businessman, though it's doubtful that this will come into play.

Sample Entry: A previous post at Cape and Cowl!

Sample Entry Two: He was going to need new shoes.

Oh, there was a dance going about in Nathan's head, asking dozens of questions, none of them with any real clear answers. But if he let those dominate his mind, he'd be so wrapped up in them that he'd never get the time or clarity of mind to answer any of them. There were practical concerns to face first, then he could get into the bigger, badder questions, that had to be haunting anyone else unlucky enough to be here.

So he organized things into a to-do list. And among the first things on that list was new shows.

Arms crossed, exhaling slowly followed by a hardening grit of his teeth, Nathan absorbed the town's sights, and shifted his weight from one side to another. Feeling how his high heels pushed up on his feet, and looking out at the city, they simply weren't going to be practical to wear anymore, no matter how good he was at running in them.

And practicality was obviously going to be law of the land around here. Survival before fashion.

He stepped forward, hips swaying, and other thoughts started to slot together as well. Food and water, of course. He'd have to get to know everyone, too. Other people were going to need help, and unfortunately, he couldn't count on the idea that everyone here was going to get along. So he'd need to know which people were going to be a problem, too.

Shoes. Food. Water. People. The city, it needed to be mapped out. Things needed to be organized, see to it that everyone was taken care of and safe.

Nathan, naturally, wanted to know why he was here, or who had brought him, but he'd cross that bridge when he got to it. He had the now to focus on, and if he ignored everything and everyone else to pursue those questions...

"Well, what kind of hero would I be?" he thought to himself, privately, as he walked down the street. Still, he gave out a frustrated sigh.

"They couldn't have gotten me while I was at the gym and in my running shoes, of course, of course..." he muttered, as his heels kept clacking on the concrete.

Name: Hoshi

Preferred Apartment: 2.001

Character Name: Kanda Yu
Canon: D.Gray-man
Background/History: Right here. (Taking him from the end of the last chapter, 216, for the record.)

Personality: Kanda can be considered a loner of sorts. He's anti-social, cold, stotic, arrogant, and wants nothing to do with anyone. He prefers to work alone, to keep himself at a distance from everyone else. He doesn't need or require friends, after all. When he's around people that openly show emotion he's unfamiliar with - like Allen or Johnny - he flat out doesn't know what to do. Though he's seem moments later after such display of emotion, for example, hitting Johnny with the hilt of his sword to get him to knock it off. Chances are he'd do something similar to everyone else, save Lenalee. She's most likely the only exception for everything Kanda Yu.

Things are done, for him, his way, and thus often goes onto missions alone, often leaving behind the accompanying Finder. Exorcists are not saviors, in his eyes; it is not their job to play God. It is their job to collect the Innocence and kill whatever Akuma happen to get in the way. If someone got injured, that was their problem, not his. He claims not to care, but as the series progresses, deep down he actually does care about his comrades, although he almost never shows it. However, if his fellow Exorcists get in his way, or don’t want to let him do things his way, then he isn’t afraid to let them know. He’ll even go as far as activating his Innocence to get his point across.

Kanda also isn't the brightest, either. More often than not, he'll forget about what's in front of him in favor for arguments and stupid rivalry. This is shown the most whenever Kanda is referred to by his given name, Yu. It's one of the many things that he hates, and because of such he only introduces himself as Kanda. Lavi, surprisingly, along with General Tiedoll, have been the only ones to call Kanda by his given name and walk away from the ordeal (though, Lavi is the only one Kanda manhandles) relatively unharmed. Other than being called by his given name, Kanda hates a lot of things – in fact, he says there’s too many things he hates, he can’t even list them all. Among his 'most hated' list are people who are cursed and those who cannot keep their promises.

Let it be known that he's like this for...most of the series.

While it's unknown as to why Kanda hates those who are cursed (such as Allen Walker, for example), guesses can be made about Kanda's hate for those who break promises. Kanda made one to himself - practically making it his life's goal - to search for and find someone from his past life. Watching as simple promises, such as protecting a life, get broken pisses him off to no end. In fact, Kanda even states that he hates people who break their promises more than idiotic, naive people. Who can one trust - or even rely on - in war if a simple promise can't be kept, after all?

Kanda can also be considered to be in the "rebellious teenager phase," what with his lack of respect toward others, and especially authority. In fact, the only adult that Kanda actually respects is his teacher/master/general, Froi Tiedoll. He'll easily go against orders from other figures of authority, such as Komui or the head nurse, as it just goes against doing things his way.

While Kanda was fighting against Alma Karma, he was seen to only express one single emotion: anger. He completely shut down his thinking process, focusing – embracing – only on the anger he felt towards Alma, and as the fight wore on, it became obvious that Kanda would not stop until Alma was dead. Allen tried to interfere, however, even commenting on how Kanda had a "funny face" (perhaps to tentatively lighten the mood or to get a reaction from Kanda – which failed) and observed that Kanda had shut down because "it hurt too much to think."

Once Allen managed to snap Kanda out of it (getting stabbed in the process). Kanda is seen losing the will to continue the fight. Rather, he tries to protect him whenever Allen's Noah starts to awaken by getting him out of harms way.

After recovering from Alma's failed self-destruction attempt, he's seen escaping with Alma with Allen's help – to which Kanda says "Thank you, Allen Walker." It is the first time Kanda has called Allen by his rightful name and not "beansprout," and to this day it is the only time he has done so.

With Allen's help, the two flee to Martel, where they could be alone during Alma'as last moments without the church, without Innocence, without anything to do with the war they were created to fight for. It is to be speculated that sometime between the Noah Wisely tampering with their memories and Allen's interference during the fight, Kanda came to the realization that Alma Karma holds the soul of the woman he had been searching for his entire life. Together, they spend time together with Alma in Kanda's arm until Alma finally succumbs to the dark matter consuming him. When he does go, Alma tells Kanda that he loves him, and Kanda returns the sentiment in his own way, while tearing up, to both Alma and the woman whom he was in his past life.

When Kanda returns to the Order three months later, he doesn't seem to have changed much. He's still rude (shown by calling Lenalee 'ugly' from crying so much), still butts heads with authority (particularly Lville), and still prefers to do things his own way. The changes in Kanda seem to subtly show, though. Where he most likely wouldn't have done anything before, Kanda saves Johnny from a bad run-in with the Crow, however after rudly declares he's joining Johnny in his search for Allen Walker by literally getting in his face.

Later, after a brief run-in with an Akuma, Johnny asks Kanda why he came back when he was finally able to free himself from the Order. Being the one to awaken the Fourteenth inside Allen, Kanda tells him that "this regret simple won't let me die peacefully." His hatred for the Order had outweighed his hatred for the Noah to the point where he did absolutely nothing when faced with Allen's Noah transformation during their mission in Paris. He didn't even care enough for the Order to report it to Komui. It's something that now weighs heavily on Kanda's shoulders, and is something he wants to settle seemingly as soon as possible. Even though he's wearing the Order's uniform again, it's something that he has chosen to do, orders be damned.

Allen and Kanda have...a special sort of relationship, starting from the very first day they met. They never got off on the right foot, always at each other's throat. Kanda had made it more than obvious that he hated Allen for various reasons, and more often than not, when they argued they would start fighting and have to be pulled apart by other members of the Order. The longer Allen was around, though, and through the few missions they had been sent on together, though, they gained not only an odd rivalry of sorts, but an equally odd - if not more dysfunctional - sort of... comradeship. Enough so that Kanda does thank him and address him properly, eventually, and does seek him out after returning to the Order.

You could say that their odd rivalry friendship ...relationship has lead Kanda to get the urge to slice up a seemingly innocent street performing clown - poor clown! - which only grew stronger the longer he looked at said clown. The clown was eventually revealed to be Allen, and after preventing him from running, the first thing Kanda did? Violently use a towel to rub the makeup off of Allen's face to check and see if the other had become a Noah or not.

When he's seen watching Johnny tend to an unconscious Allen, Kanda thanks him for being there for him before leaving. It could be that it's more than Kanda himself could offer (since his only offer was to yell at Allen some more to wake up), but though he left after giving his thanks, it could be implied that watching them stirred something. Kanda doesn't give his thanks out for free.

Though Kanda used to leave his comerades be, even if injured, he's shown at this point that he's willing to aid others, as shown by him giving Johnny some of his blood which has some (though depliated) healing abilities, something he had discovered after accidentally dropping blood into one of Noise Marie's head injuries and witnessed it fully healing him. It's not something he wants to be known, but it's also something he isn't afraid to use, either, should he feel the need to.

Kanda also declares the Fourteenth as “his to kill,” though doing so would also likely kill Allen in the process. Perhaps a kindness, as Allen had preciously told the other Exorcists to kill him should the Fourteenth awaken within him. As he was the one to fully awaken the Noah within Allen, he sees it as, not as his duty, but his responsibility to be the one to kill the Fourteenth.

Abilities/Powers: non-innocence

Suffice to say, Kanda is neither a normal human or Exorcist. Because of this, he is able to heal much faster than ordinary humans (ie, an injury that should take 5 months to heal healing in only three days). He is also able to withstand the Akuma's virus due to a secret skill developed by the Chan family, and he is the only Exorcist that is not a parasitic-type to be able to withstand the virus.

Also due to his restorative abilities, he is seen "approximately 580 seconds" after dying, reviving himself. He is also able to reproduce falling limbs and also has abnormal physical strength. How fast or slow his regeneration abilities are solely depends on his life reserve, measured by the mark on his chest. It's shown during his fight with Alma Karma, the more quickly he uses his life force with Mugen, not only does the more powerful become, but the lighter his hair ends up due to the overusage of his life. Eventually, during this fight, Kanda has used his healing to the point where he is slow to recover from a self-destruct blast and is seen with his body physically crumbling, like stone. Though he does manage to piece himself back together, his enitire body is still covered in cracks.

It's also to be noted that since Kanda comes back, while his hair has return backed to its original color, it's to be assumed that Kanda no longer possesses his ability to regenerate. In chapter 208, it can be somewhat seen that there are cracks originating from where the mark is on his chest, left over from his fight with Alma. He furthermore comments after a night of heavy drinking that "this is what it's like to be normal" while enduring a hangover, something that also says had never happened before, no matter how much he drank.

While it isn't an ability, per se, Kanda doesn't see things like a normal human being. Rather, what he sees is the world...covered by lotus flowers. It's been this way since he was young, though it's hard to say if it's how he's seen things since he first woke up in the Sixth Lab in the Asian Branch or after waking after the scientists tried to kill him. There is no mention of it until Kanda goes to see Zhu Mei prior to leaving for Jordan. As a child, he was told that it's nothing more than an illusion and never speaks of it.

His blood had also once possessed the ability to heal. All it would take would be his blood to either enter the injury or be injested by the injured if it's an internal injury. At one time it was able to completely heal an injury, even a serious head injury, however as Kanda's own ability to heal has diminished, his blood's ability to heal has also diminished.

innocence
Mugen (六幻). Kanda's Innocence. When he was first seen with it, it took the shape of a short blade with several small wings on what served as the hilt. Whenever Kanda is first introduced in canon, it took the form of a traditional chokuto. However, since it broke during his fight with Skinn Bolic, it was reforged into a more traditional Japanese katana. Not much is known about the properties and risks being a Crystal Type holds, other than the fact that it uses the user's blood as its weapon. It reacts to the user's emotions much like a parasitic-type's Innocence does, but it in no way alters the user's body. The only visible side-effect of being a Crystal Type that is currently known of is that there are stigmata on the user's body from which their weapon is formed.

For Kanda, his Innocence is only the second to be turned into a Crystal Type that takes the shape of a sword with a red blade.

Bakuhakuzan (Explosive Spirit Slash) • 爆魄斬
In order for this to be used, Kanda needs to active Sangenshiki. When it is used, he makes a slash that creates small explosions and is powerful enough to cut through a Level 4.

Consume, Mugen
Used when and only if Mugen is broken. Using its energy, Mugen is reconstructed briefly in order to deliver a single slash.

Hakka Tourou (Eight Flowers Praying Mantis) • 八花蟷螂
While using nigentou, Kanda rapidly slashes the enemy eight times. The form it takes resembles a flower, hence the name.

Kaichuu · Ichigen (Hell's Insects: First Illusion) • 界蟲「一幻」
Very basic. Once activated, Kanda swings his sword and releases several illusionary creatures to devour and destroy his opponents. (Also used to purposefully piss off his fellow Exorcists when necessary.) The appearance of these 'insects' naturally change appearance once Mugen's changed from an equipment-type to Crystal-type Innocence.

Nigentou (Double Illusion Blades) • 二幻刀
Kanda covers both sword and scabbard (or, if not scabbard, then pure energy) to create two impossibly sharp blades using a coat of energy. While Mugen is now Crystal, it appears that when Kanda activates his Innocence to this level, there's what appears to be two physical blades merely coated by energy.

Sangenshiki (Three Illusions) • 禁忌 「三幻式」
Deemed "taboo" by Komui, because this uses some of Kanda's life energy in exchange for drastically increasing both his speed and strength.

Shouka (Sublimate) • 昇華
Kanda taps in to the power of his tattoo using this. When activated, Kanda's pupils change into three dots, and veins also rise around his eyes.

Sample Entry: Here, a return from a canon update.

[It's through fiddling and trying to press the buttons - or is it the screen? He can't feel any buttons - that the video gets turned on. At first, one can see a uniformed chest, only for it to be cut out seconds later.

But the soft cursing at the 'weird golem' certainly doesn't stop. It...should be more than obvious that Kanda isn't really the best at technology. Hell, he doesn't know what the hell he's even messing with. He certainly needs a 'For Dummies' book, possibly soon.

The feed comes back on a few seconds later, and a closer look at his face says he doesn't really look that. Well. And definitely disoriented.]

Where the hell is this? [There's a pause, followed by a frown as he moved to put the 'golem-device' down, like he's trying to remember something but can't recall what. After a moment of trying, he's giving up on it for now.]

Tch. Has anyone seen a plump, round golden golem with wings and a cross? Goes by the name Timcampy. There's also two others, one with white hair, scar on his left cheek, has a stupid smile, answers to 'beansprout.' The other has brown hair in a ponytail and has thick glasses, name's Johnny.

[...]

And they were handcuffed together last I saw.

Whatever information's available on this place is also helpful. [And then he'll just. Fiddle with the damn thing to try and turn it off.]

Sample Entry Two: (From Zodion)
Well, wasn't this a predicament. One moment, he had been standing in front of Howard Link, who had been assumed for dead for the past three months - ironic, really, since he could say the same about himself until recently as far as the Black Order went - and now...

It was definitely safe to say that he was no longer in the same city anymore. It was hard to say if he was even in the same dimension, not that he recalled one of the Noah having the ability to travel through dimension with ease. Either way, he didn't have the time to linger here. He had an unconscious beansprout and an idiot to get back to.

Kanda couldn't help but feel tense as he stood there, eyes quickly scanning his surroundings to make sure he really was alone. Still, it didn't reassure him enough to relax his hold on Mugen - rather, his grip tightened on it instead. Saying he was uneasy would be a definite understatement; he felt on edge, and had been, really, since he had found that stupid clown of a beansprout.

As he scanned the area, though, he couldn't help but pause when he spotted the alter and the box resting on top of it. As soon as he did, there was the absurd urge to just...walk over to it and inspect it. He resisted, however, giving it a simple frown in response before starting to physically survey the area. Kanda found, much to his displeasure, that there was no visible exit. He also found himself making his way to the alter subconsciously. Funny how that worked itself out.

The moment Kanda walked over the pool of water, he had to stop and wince at the sudden stinging sensation on his back. A hand went to Mugen immediately, ready to draw it as he spun around to see what the source of the pain was. He found nothing but the water surrounding him, shining brightly. Coupled with the fact of how clean and clear it was, one could mistake it as a mirror from a distance quite easily.

But Kanda was up close and personal with this mirror. Flying dome of water. Whatever it was.

It wasn't the fact that he was faced with his reflection that made him stop a second time. A normal reflection isn't something to stop over; if it were a normal reflection then he would just slice right through it and be done with it. Even if slicing through water accomplishes nothing in the end. (Kanda Logic never made much sense to other people anyway.)

This wasn't a normal reflection.

He was naked in this reflection, and he honestly didn't know what to think.

Well, it still didn't keep him from withdrawing Mugen and cutting through water anyway. Flustered? Maybe. Confused? Definitely. Feeling slightly better after cutting through water? Check. Frustrated? Jackpot.

"What the hell is this sick place?!" Naturally, as with all things Kanda Yu, only one emotion made it through, and it was the one most definitely associated with him by those who knew him.

It really didn't help the ache in back was getting slightly strong. And he was losing what patience he had left, not that he had a whole lot to begin with.

"Tch!" Azure eyes narrowed into a glare at his own reflection as the 'mirror' reformed. Looks like he had no choice but to look himself over in this...magic nude mirror water thing.

Really, he saw no difference. He looked the same as he had the past couple months. Slight build, cracking chest, empty 'ohm' at the source, still most definitely male...

Frowning deeply, he couldn't see what the big deal was. When he found no changes with the front of his person, he glanced back at the reflection of his backside, where the paid had been before. (Honestly, it's where he should have looked in the first place...) He raised a curious brow when the pain dulled and strained to see that there was a difference on his back, though it was difficult to see.

A tattoo in white ink. A decently sized one, at that. Almost as big as the ohm on his chest.

Though— This wasn't a natural water reflection either, now that he thinks of i t. Had had to make sure himself.

Quickly, Kanda sheathed his sword and shed his coat and undershirt. The bandages covering his chest and hiding the cracked mark from few were partially unraveled, leaving the end to hang as he tried to look for the tattoo himself. It was awkward, considering he had to strain himself and pull at the skin on his shoulder. The human body most definitely doesn't bend that way, but at least he could kind of get a glimpse of the mark on him.

Oh, great. He was branded. Now he just had to figure out what the hell this mark was going to do to him.

—He just, y'know, would rather like to get back home before he needed to do that.

Cursing softly, Kanda moved to fix his bandages and redress himself. He never noticed that the box on the alter had been glowing this entire him, since he found himself here, but he definitely noticed when it stopped. Cautiously, he reached out to open it, first picking up the device inside and giving it an odd look. What the hell?

His curiosity was momentarily put on hold when he caught sight of the letter beneath. Taking it out of the box next, he opened it to read...

...And then stared at it once he had.

And stared some more.

"...You have got to be fucking kidding me." He was stuck, by the sounds of it, with a golem that he refused to turn on in fear of being tracked by the Order and some weird black thing with a button that did nothing when he pressed it.

Don't even get him started on the weird magic nude water mirror thing.

Or the tattoo.

Personality:
"Yeah, I have anger issues. And I don't think primal scream therapy will help--'cause I doubt I'd ever stop."

The first thing someone is likely to notice about Jenny is that she's a very angry person. Life threw her quite the curveball recently in the manifestation of her powers--and she hasn't been taking it well, growing cynical and grumpy. Gaining her powers put her through quite a lot of trauma as she found herself losing everything she valued and ended up getting tortured by a supervillain, and Jenny was never really equipped to deal with that kind of thing, having grown up a bit spoiled and having had what she described as "the perfect life." Her family was well off and let her have whatever she wanted, she was well-liked by her peers, she was a straight A student, she had her idea of the perfect boyfriend...it's really no surprise she initially reacted to her unfortunate circumstances in a cranky and bratty manner. It didn't really help that she learned she was only selected for Avengers Academy because the superhero community was scared of her turning into a formidable supervillain. She's since learned to treat her new life with more maturity and has mellowed out some, but she's still a surly thing with a scathing remark ready for just about everyone. You don't even have to do anything in particular to earn it--she'll criticize you just for being in her general vicinity.

Jenny tends to speak her mind and is incredibly blunt about her opinions, never withholding a sarcastic remark like "oh great, now I'm stuck learning mental health from the craziest Avenger ever!" when she was forced into an anger management class taught by Hank Pym. She's usually not going to reign herself in just to spare someone's feelings, not even hesitating to refer to one of her friends as a killer when she denied choking some Nazis to death out of guilt. Sometimes she means well enough with her honesty, but it still comes out phrased pretty harshly. She also doesn't like to see others lying to themselves, so will offer up her harsh "words of wisdom" when she assumes that's what someone's doing--she believes Julie Power is a lesbian, for example, and publicly criticizes her for not just coming out and admitting it because it's not like she's surrounded by homophobes or anything.

Jenny desperately wants to be normal again. She's nowhere near as into the superhero thing as some of the others--and with good reason, when you consider what her powers have done to her life. Jenny's desperation for a way to cure her and get her out of the hazmat suit even led her to seek the help of someone the Academy didn't particularly trust--because to her it didn't matter if he was a sleazeball as long as she got results. Unfortunately for her, things never seem to look very good--her body continues to mutate past any attempted cures and every glimpse she's seen of her future(as superheroes tend to be prone to getting) shows her still living in the suit. She's had more than a few freak-outs about her predicament and how little hope she has for it getting any better, but when the opportunity to be normal did present itself to her, she ultimately chose saving her friends over it. She's also been presented with temporary solutions to dampen her powers for a few hours at a time, but she's elected not to take them because it makes her unable to defend herself and she doesn't want to give anyone the chance to hurt her ever again. It's permanently cured or nothing for her.

With how prone Jenny is to lashing out at others, it's no surprise that she gets jealous incredibly easily. The arrival of new students at the Academy immediately set her off, to the point of her having to spread her unhappiness to everyone else. Others have manipulated this side of her, ruining her chances of getting along with Laura Kinney by leading Jenny to believe that her boyfriend Ken was going to leave her for her. Because of this, she spent a great deal of time being especially harsh towards Laura, and got pretty upset with Ken for being friendly with her. Even when she learned that the person that pointed it out to her was really just trying to make something of nothing and stir shit, it was hard for her to shake and it took her awhile to apologize to Laura.

Jenny's morals are a lot more flexible than those of most of her friends and she's usually all for getting revenge. She was willing to bend her morals for a chance to help her boyfriend(whose body is made of rock) and herself be normal by allowing someone she knew to be a bad person to work on a cure for her and Ken, and wasn't going to hesitate to do his bidding for a little while in order to motivate him to help her. Jenny's desire for revenge is first seen when Avengers Academy took a fieldtrip to a supervillain prison where Normal Osborn just so happened to be. Osborn tortured her and most of her teammates, so she led two of them to shut off the power in the prison and confront him. Leading them to believe she was going to force him to turn them all back to normal, she actually planned to kill him for revenge because she didn't believe he could. She'll also pursue revenge on someone else's behalf, convincing two of her teammates to track down the supervillain that brutally attacked and manipulated one of their teachers so they could film themselves beating him up and forcing him to apologize for what he'd done. Jenny's learned the hard way that this isn't appropriate behavior at all, having almost been kicked out of the Academy, but it doesn't stop her from having vengeful urges.

Jenny may come off as selfish at times, but she does really care for her friends(and boyfriend) and will sacrifice for them. She may be pretty harsh with them, but she won't tolerate anyone hurting them, physically or emotionally. When she finally got what she'd wanted--a chance to be normal again--she gave it up so she could use her powers to save her friends. She was reluctant to do so at first, being seeing Ken about to do the very same she stepped up instead, hoping he could remain normal and still get to have a happy life. At one point, the group was sure they were all going to die unless one of them sacrificed themself, and when it was pointed out that Jenny was really the one who could do it, she accepted it and agreed to do so despite Ken's protests, pointing out that she had less to live for anyway considering the fact that she was likely going to be stuck in the hazmat suit forever. Hank Pym showed up at the last minute to save all of them, but Jenny was still planning on dying for the sake of her friends.

Abilities/Powers:
Jenny's body produces various forms of radiation and other harmful substances, making her what she describes as "a walking W.M.D." Being in the same room as her without her hazmat suit is potentially fatal, as her spit, sweat, and even her breath are poisonous. She can give you cancer, sterilize you, put you in a coma, and create electromagnetic pulses capable of causing decent sized blackouts. While there's no complete list of harmful substances her body can create, it's pretty varied--from neurotoxins to anti-matter.

That said, Jenny's body is also pretty resistent to any attempts to cure her--her body comes up with a way to beat most attempts as if it were a mutating virus.

Sample Entry:
So what, did I wake up and find myself in some lame horror movie? This set-up doesn't feel very original. When's the loser supervillain behind this finally going to show up so I can kick his stupid ass? If you come out soon, maybe I won't give you cancer. You're getting sterilized either way, though. That one's non-negotiable at this point.

[Jenny's pretty pissed off, but she might be bluffing there. Might.

She lets out a disgusted sigh.]

Am I the only kid from the Academy here? I mean, while that'd be the smart way to go about this kind of thing, I wouldn't be surprised if whoever's behind this is keeping up with the time-honored tradition of kidnapping the entire team. [Pause.] Anyway, it's not usually my job to say this, but...Avengers Academy assemble or whatever.

Sample Entry Two:
Life in Haven was a pain in the ass. True, Jenny certainly wasn't the only one that hated being there--who'd enjoy this kind of thing?--but there was a special layer of sucky when you were stuck in a containment suit. It wasn't like home, where she at least had somewhere to take her suit off when she was alone or with Ken, the only person she couldn't hurt because of his own condition. She didn't have one of the greatest scientific minds around living in the same building, there to help her whenever she needed it and constantly working on ways to help her.

She was toxic to everyone around her, and if anything happened to her suit or any sort of problems arose...what could she do about it? Being extra careful could only get her so far. She hadn't really warmed up to any of the people here, either, so if there was anyone that could help her...would they be willing to? Shit. She needed to get something figured out. See if anyone had the skills to do something about her problems...her condition. Whether they'd have the means or not in this kind of place was another matter entirely...but she had to try. She had to do whatever was necessary--and surely, someone here would be concerned with her problems, too. Because it wasn't her health and safety that were at stake. It was everyone else's.

Jenny was so lost in her thoughts that it took her a minute to notice--the water she was getting looked absolutely disgusting. Had she accidentally done something to it? This didn't look like something her powers could do, but...either way, this was bad. In her frustration, Jenny set the bucket of water down on the ground in front of her, and gave it a good kick. Seeing the gross contents go flying was really only a little bit satisfying, but it was something.

She felt sorry for her roommates, though, because she already knew she was probably going to bite their heads off tonight.

Character Name: Claire Redfield
Canon: Resident Evil
Canon Point: After Resident Evil: Degeneration
Background/History: Claire Redfield @ REwika
Personality: Given the universe she's from, a world where bio-terrorism is a very real threat, and given the amount of horror and tragedy she's had to face, it's a miracle that she can still smile. However, somehow she does. While most characters in the series are shown as fighters, the front line warriors that fight the bio-terrorism threat up close and personal, Claire goes down a peaceful path with an activist group called Terra Save. Leon S. Kennedy even comments on it in Resident Evil: Degeneration, saying to the effect that he and her brother went down a different path, but one no more important than her own.

But that's getting ahead of ourselves.

Claire Redfield is the younger sister of former S.T.A.R.S. agent Chris Redfield [one of the main characters of Resident Evil], it's evident through the games that they have a very close sibling relationship, given that she leaves the safety of her college to go find her brother after he's not been in contact with her. This fact is also backed up by how Chris drops nearly everything to go rescue his sister when a message is routed to him about her location and situation. [RE: Code Veronica]

She is both strong-willed and independent, as well as quick-witted and a caring individual. When thrown into life or death situations, she reacts quickly and accurately, however her concerns usually focus on those around her rather than herself. Almost any time she's given a choice of doing something that could help her towards her goal, over helping someone else, she will always help the other person. In Resident Evil 2, there is a point when Sherry Birkin, a little girl she finds in the police headquarters, gets infected with the G-virus. Even though it's dangerous and could end up killing her, she has Leon and Sherry go wait in an emergency train while she goes to find and later create an antidote for her.

Claire is capable of making and holding strong relationships with many people in the games through the years. Some of those include, Leon S. Kennedy, her brother Chris Redfield, and Sherry Birkin. In Resident Evil: Code Veronica, she is finds a computer to send a message to someone she trusts, Leon, knowing that he will come through for her and send help in anyway possible. When faced with Steve Burnside, a convict on the island she was imprisoned on in the same game, she ultimately chooses to trust him and they form a bond that lasts until his death at the end of the game. She grieves over his loss and curses those that helped his untimely death.

Through the many mediums we see her in we see a lot of varying degrees of loyalty, love, compassion and anger. She does not forgive the villains of the series, even the accidental ones and is not shy of violence when needed. If needed, she is willing to put herself in danger to be helpful to others but is not careless and will run when needed.

Previous Game History: N/A
Abilities/Powers: Out of the series, Claire is one of the few fairly "normal" characters, she doesn't have any professional training at the start of the series. Her only aid is that her brother was in the Air Force and was on S.T.A.R.S. [which is basically the Resident Evil equivalent of the American S.W.A.T.] It's because of him and her being a bit of a tomboy that she knows how to handle a variety of guns, administer basic first aid and handle a combat knife.

Other skills include: Excellent agility and normal athletic strength, minor leadership skills [she's able to convince a group of survivors to follow her lead, even if it's only reluctantly] and hand to hand combat.

All of these skills have only progressed over her years of fighting the bio-terrorist attacks.

Sample Entry:
[there's this tapping sound, mostly from her fingers that drum on the table as she waits for a response]

I'm beginning to worry you've all gotten lost out there, or worse. Anyone? Respond.

[the tapping continues before she's picking the radio up and holding it closer to her mouth]

I'm going to repeat the instructions again. Go through the corridor, down the hallway on the left and through the third door on the right. There should be supplies there. [she's looking at a the video feed now, seeing no sign of her roommates]

Screw this, I'm coming after you all. [there's only so long you can wait before jumping to help]

Sample Entry Two: Well this is just fantastic, Claire, she chides silently to herself as she wanders through the deserted airport hallway.

The dim emergency lights make any sort of visibility crappy at best, and she's not feeling to safe with her ironically red and white umbrella weapon. Of course, in a dangerous situation the only weapon they could rummage up from that V.I.P. airport lounge is an umbrella with the infamous pharmaceutical and evil bio-terrorist group logo's colors.

Honestly, she would have laughed about it, if the fact she might have to beat an undead would-be airline passenger to... well re-death with it in her imminent future.

Trying not to heave a sigh at the horrible luck her family must have, she leans against a wall and quickly looks around the corner for enemies, the umbrella held close to her chest. She could javelin the things if needed, and run like hell if the thing broke.

She doesn't close her eyes to steady herself, no that's not a good trait to pick up in these situations she learned over the years, but she does take that calming breath before quickly jumping around the corner, ready to serve some poor undead victim a healthy dose of umbrella end if needed.

[personal profile] loveandevil 2012-10-04 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
Shinra may to come off as a goofy, jovial fellow--but one may also notice that something feels off about him. He tends to act friendly and joke a lot, and anyone that speaks to him had better prepare to hear about the object of his affection--a headless Irish fairy named Celty, AKA Ikebukuro's famous urban legend known as the Black Rider. If someone were to bring the Black Rider up to him, he may make some strange comments about say, how cute it is, and how it's far cuter without its head. He wears a lab coat at all times, because his beloved Celty wears black all the time and he wants to be the guy in white to her lady in black. It's hard to spend any length of time with Shinra without noticing that he's an odd one, because he doesn't seem to make any effort to hide it. Most people find him weird and unnerving, but put up with him only because he's good at his job. Shinra himself doesn't seem to mind that too much, easily admitting to the fact that Shizuo Heiwajima and Izaya Orihara are his only friends(Celty is more than a friend, of course).

As a doctor, it's no surprise that Shinra is in general fascinated by biology. Anything he finds that's biologically unusual? He definitely wants to have a look at it--to poke it and figure out how it works, why it's the way it is. He only took an interest in befriending Shizuo because of his unusual strength, often begging the boy to let him examine him while they were in elementary school together. He's constantly curious about Celty and how she functions--how does she "see" and "hear" the world around her when her ears and eyes are elsewhere? Shinra's always happy to look over a supernatural or otherwise unusual patient, and that says a lot about his interest in them, considering how lazy he is.

While it is what he makes his living doing, Shinra frequently finds his jobs as an underground doctor to be a hassle and complains that treating two people in one night is two much work--something a licensed doctor would probably never say, with how busy they tend to be. Part of why he finds it to be such a nuisance may be because he prefers not to leave his house. Depending on the patient, he may not actually care all that much about what he's doing--but he'll still do the job to the best of his ability, of course. As friendly as he may seem, he's really a shut-in who isn't all that interested in most people.

On the other hand, most people that know Shinra are quite surprised when they learn how good with children he is. He's even been accused of being a lolicon because that seems more fitting for a freak like him than just genuinely being good with kids. Around children, it's said that he acts more like a kindly old village doctor than what he really is--a sleazy, underground doctor that makes most of his money doing illegal work for gangsters. Shinra is also very loyal to Celty and to his (albeit few) friends, having once protected Izaya in high school by allowing himself to be stabbed with a knife.

To Shinra, love is the most important thing. This might not sound like a bad thing, but Shinra's love makes him very manipulative and he will do pretty much anything to keep himself and Celty together. Most notably, he hid her head from her because he believed that if she got it back, she might leave him. In his own words, if it's for his love he'll become as bad as he has to be. He even referred to himself as an "evil guy whose love is as deep as the ocean." He's made jokes about how he makes sure she doesn't get too close to his friend Shizuo, because then she might leave him for him, and...no one's really sure about how serious he is about that. Shinra is so obsessively infatuated with Celty that he wrote over 20 diary entries in a single year that were strictly about her, including one on fetish outfits he'd like to see her wearing. Shinra's in general a very sexual person and often throws in sexual comments when talking to or about Celty(and no one else, because Celty's the only one worth thinking about in that way!) even in very inappropriate situations.

Abilities/Powers:
Shinra does not possess any supernatural abilities, and is actually kind of physically pathetic. He is, however, a very skilled doctor, so that's something.

Sample Entry:
A post at Luceti and a post at Asgardeventide.
Sample Entry Two:
Re-used from [community profile] luceti!

Shinra was fascinated by the wings. How did the Malnosso manage to graft them onto every member of the village? Why was it that they were so fragile, so heavily connected to their owner's wellbeing? As fragile as they were, it was hard for Shinra to do much in the way of examining them. He'd often been tempted to pluck one of his own feathers, to sacrifice his own health for a little while, to take a look at it and see if he could discover its secrets, but he'd been advised not to and had been able to resist the temptation so far.

Still, he wondered, if they could not be used for flight, what was the point? Why did they need to have these tiny, useless wings added to them? How was it that they could move and control these extra parts? The control of one's own body parts was done by the brain, but the brain had to be made to recognize these extra parts. They had to connect properly.

Furthermore, what was with all of the different colors and patterns? Wouldn't it be easier to just give everyone the same color? Did the color mean anything? His own where the same bright yellow as the helmet his beloved Celty often wore to hide her lack of a head. He liked that--a connection to his beloved, right on his body! part of him wished Celty was here--would Celty like it here? She definitely wouldn't like the experimentation. But Celty was a fairy from the beautiful countryside of Ireland, and perhaps the atmosphere here would be more suited to her than the busy streets of Ikebukuro, Japan. Shinra himself didn't care where he was, he personally was just happy as long as he was by Celty's side.

...Ah, he was getting distracted. Of course, any time was a good time to think of Celty, but he had work to do.

"Here goes..." mentally preparing himself for what he was about to do, a grin spread across Shinra's face.

Despite all the warnings, he grabbed one of his feathers and plucked it. For science.

Character Name: Katniss Everdeen
Canon: The Hunger Games
Canon Point: After returning to District 12 in "Mockingjay," a couple of weeks after Peeta's return.
Background/History: Katniss Everdeen, The Hunger Games canon

Personality: Katniss Everdeen is a survivor through and through, rarely giving up in even the most extreme of circumstances. She often thinks of herself as selfish and purely motivated by what she needs to stay alive and Katniss easily tends to delude herself into believing the worst about her. But at the her personality that grows as the story progresses, as she learns more about love and being loved.

From even before the books begin, her father’s death highlights Katniss as a highly stubborn and motivated survivor. She easily gives up the rest of her childhood at age eleven to become the head of her family. She won’t let her family starve, won’t give in to self-pity or grief, however much she misses her father. She’ll do whatever she can for them, the rest of the District and Panem be damned. But a true self-centered survivor would only fend for themselves. Instead, everything she does is for her younger sister, Prim – easily one of the most important people in Katniss’ life, if not the most important in her eyes.

If it was in Katniss’ power, she would make sure Prim would want for nothing. And while there are various examples of this in the books – allowing Prim’s ugly cat to stay despite meaning it would be an extra mouth to feed, ensuring that Prim never has to take an extra tesserae in the Hunger Games to supply their family with grain and other supplies - nothing speaks more than her willingness to take Prim’s place in the 74th Hunger Games despite knowing full well it could easily mean Katniss’ own death. Her little sister must have every opportunity to live a fulfilling life that Katniss doesn’t have herself.

It’s with the 74th Hunger Games that Katniss learns that she’s so much more than a provider. She really is a survivor at heart. She doesn’t care what others think of her. She’s brash and self-centered, rude, rebellious, difficult to relate to. All Katniss wants is to do whatever she needs to in order to survive and make it back to Prim. And if it means killing all those in the arena with her, she will not think twice. Cold and calculating, maybe even scary in her ability to be a predator and not prey.

But at the same time, while Katniss keeps reminding herself of this, focusing on her own negative attributes, Peeta sees something different. The girl on fire, the girl who has no idea of the effect she can have on people. She’s proud and true to herself, noble in the way she fights for Prim and then to keep Peeta live, however selfish she claims her own actions are. And although Katniss never sees it, she’s far less heartless than she thinks. The nightmares she has after the Hunger Games attest to that. If she truly didn’t care about anyone but herself, then Katniss’ subconscious wouldn’t prey so easily on her guilt.

Katniss’ stunt with the poisoned berries in the arena of the 74th Hunger Games, her last ditch attempt to ensure both she and Peeta leave alive, is seen by most of Panem as the spark needed to ignite rebellion. Katniss is introspective enough to give thought to that, to see how easily others would see it as such. But she does it out of a selfish need to keep them alive. Because in the end of the games, she can’t bring herself to sacrifice this boy who would easily sacrifice himself for her. She has a selfish desire to keep alive his adoration – he doesn’t have to love her, but he does, and it’s something that Katniss doesn’t fully comprehend but does realize she needs. And in the end, she’s tired of being a pawn. Yet, she’s still cold enough to tell Peeta that she played up her love for him then as an act and a trick for the Games. It’s the lie she needs to survive at that point in her life, where she wants her best friend Gale (also in love with her) to be easy in her company. She wants her life to be simple.

For the Quarter Quell and the 75th Hunger Games, former victors are selected to return to the arena and once again fight to the death. This time, Katniss actually stops being a survivor in favor to a different mantra that she can never breaks: keep Peeta alive. It’s easy to dismiss as a result of her love for him, or her selfish desire to keep alive someone who cares so much for her, but in many ways, it’s also her way of clinging to morals and humanity. Time and time again, she points out that Peeta’s almost too good, shouldn’t be in the Hunger Games, is nothing like her when it comes to how easily she’ll take a life. It’s something knows she can never be like but, perhaps, in keeping Peeta alive, she can be good, too.

Like in the Games itself, she becomes a pawn in a much bigger game when the Districts rebel against the Capitol. The rebels use her as a sympathetic spokesperson to garner support and she knowingly lets herself be used, especially after Prim points out she can bargain for the other victors’ amnesty. But even then, she can’t stick to the rules and, although not necessarily on purpose, finds herself breaking them left and right. To do what’s right by her instead of others. It’s why she uses her position as a spokesperson to gain amnesty for the other victors or to allow Prim to keep Buttercup even though life in District 13 is a life of strict rations. And the way she runs into the heat of the attack during District 8 to help protect the hospital rather than hiding in safety as Haymitch wants her to do.

During these rebellions, she also finally does learn how to break. She falls into a deep depression a number of times due to various events and her inability to cope with them– Peeta’s kidnapping by President Snow, Prim’s death, etc. But these depressions also show that she’s become a far more empathetic character than she once was, even though she still can’t see it. She’s a young girl put into impossible events that would reduce any less stronger individual to pieces. But most importantly, though she survives as she always has, she learns that there are more important things to survival. That there could be political causes, that there could even be people that you must put ahead of her own self. It is this lesson in itself that motivates Katniss towards President Coin’s assassination. She will not let all her struggles and loses be in vain, allowing another power-hungry leader with little regard to human life to assume control. Katniss must be the one to do this because, by this point, she will not put anyone else she remotely cares about at risk.

In the end of the trilogy, what can be said most about Katniss is that she lives through. She goes through the motions, finds ways to distract herself, plays games to remind her that there is good in people. Even in herself. She’s not the monster that caused all these deaths. And she learns how to really love and let herself be loved.

Overall, Katniss is a strong individual with so much backbone and determination within her. She’s the girl on fire, and not just because of the outfit she wears in her introduction to the Games. She literally has an unquenchable thirst to live her life – for herself and, by the end of her canon, for all those who died. And she will do whatever it takes to honor this promise.

Although slow to trust, she does make a steadfast and loyal friend once this trust is gained. She’s resourceful and skilled and self-reliant, a quick thinker on her feet. And in many ways, her own selfishness makes for her strength in keeping those she cares about alive. It’s easier for Katniss to see all the negatives in her personality, but at the same time, she adheres to them. She reacts without thinking and is next to impossible to mold – as both Haymitch and Coin find out during their time with her. Without a doubt, Katniss is first and foremost true to herself.

In many ways, a lot of Katniss’ strengths are balanced by her weaknesses. She can be very socially inept: keeping to herself as a child, unaware of the friendships she’s made. Even Gale, her best friend, is someone she sees as a resource after their initial meeting and does not become a friend until much later on. Madge, the Mayor’s daughter, is another example of someone she’d spend time with without truly understanding the impact of that time. Prior to the Hunger Games, she considers Madge as the other lonely girl to sit with at lunch, not realizing that somehow, a friendship had developed. And with both Peeta and Gale, their romantic intentions towards her go unnoticed until the boys act upon them.

When Katniss does allow herself to feel, it often overwhelms her – a source of many of the breakdowns she eventually has after the 74th Hunger Games. It’s easier to be logical and to push aside feelings than to acknowledge them. But when she does, she feels everything - every single death that she’s caused, however indirectly, she takes responsibility for. And a lot of the times it’s too much. She would rather avoid than face problems of emotions, as seen when she initially ignores required phone sessions with her therapist at the end of Mockingjay.

Even then, she’s not very book smart and does not have a very good education. It’s not something she considers much of a fault, though she does acknowledge it, but it is pointed out again and again. Katniss has survival skills, but Katniss would never have won the Hunger Games based on wit alone. And while she comes across as very mature, at times she can be moody and prickly – a true teenager in many ways. Someone still learning much about the world she lives in, and how to be a part of it.

Katniss Everdeen | The Hunger Games | Reserved 2/2

[personal profile] stillplaying 2012-10-04 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Abilities/Powers: She is an amazing hunter, especially with a bow and arrow, capable of killing squirrels and rats by shooting an arrow in their eye without tarnishing the rest of the carcass. She can also sing beautifully, much like her father. It’s stated that when Katniss sings, even the birds fall silent to listen. Katniss is human, with all the strengths and weakness of a teenaged human girl.

Sample Entry: Previous post from Luceti, with numerous threads involving dialogue.

Sample Entry Two: (recycled from Luceti)

Today is a day that Katniss Everdeen never should have lived to see. Today - give or take the few days difference between Luceti's calender and Panem's - is the day she turns eighteen.

Life in the Seam. Two arenas. An uprising. Becoming the Mockingjay. Acting as assassin. Her own attempts at suicide. The bombs that took the wrong life.

The odds were never in her favor. Today was a day she never should have lived to see.

It's like any other day. She wakes up in her bed, shaking and sweating from a nightmare that lingers in the back of her mind. Watching Prim die again and again. Being physically incapable of rescuing her sister each and every time. And then panicking when she wakes up in a still unfamiliar room, in an unfamiliar bed.

Peeta had won. Maybe she hadn't fought this argument hard enough. But earlier this week, they packed up their treehouse shelter and moved into town. To house 43. Where Peeta's leg won't make it difficult for him to travel to town or climb up ladders. Where they live close to a bakery he could work at. Where Rue could more easily attend school.

Where she could wander around the village for the rest of the day, trying to forget every little event that led to today even as she reminds herself of all the deaths that led to her being able to turn eighteen. She carries her bow and arrow, but she has no intention to hunt. Today is an amnesty. Even if she never considered the game killed for food a part of her death toll, she can't bring herself to kill anything.

Instead, she explores the town in a way she's never bothered to before. She spends time inspecting the river and parts of the north eastern woods not too far from the house. Studying the other buildings. Going in and out of shops. She goes to the bakery and the library. Returns to the welcome center and the clothing store. Even steps into the Seventh Heaven restaurant to look but not eat. She has no appetite.

Her final stop of the day, before heading back to her new home, is at the item shop. It's easy to lose herself inside of there. To examine strange objects from other worlds that she's never seen before. And then to find something unexpected: her father's plant book.

As she flips through it, each page earning a careful caress as she studies her father's handwriting. And wonders what he would think if he were here in Luceti with her today. Would he be proud? Or would he be disappointed, loathe the girl she grew up to be?

She clutches the book to her chest before heading out and quietly whispers: "Happy birthday, Katniss Everdeen."

Character Name: Izumo Kamiki
Canon: Ao no Exorcist
Canon Point: ch. 26, after rescuing Rin
Background/History: AnE WIKI

Personality: Izumo is often described as a tsundere – that is, someone who can appear very cold and callous one second, and then very soft and caring in the next. But rather than alternating between the two distinct personalities, Izumo instead takes great pains to maintain that hard, thick-skinned persona of a young woman who couldn’t really care less about what anyone does and thinks about her.

From a young age, Izumo had been shunned by her peers, thought of as weird and mocked her because of her abilities to sense and interact with demons. Accepting this, Izumo then spent most of her childhood keeping only to herself and paying little attention to others around her. However, some time in her elementary school days, one of her classmates, Paku, decided to reach out to her despite their other classmates’ warnings, and the two have been the best of friends since then. This did not, however, encourage Izumo to start reaching out to people, or to start forgiving them for their cruel treatment of her. Indeed, she continued to remain closed off to most others, and only carefully stretched her range of value from just herself to her only other friend.

For the most part, Izumo is harsh, stubborn, haughty, and brutally honest. She doesn’t go out of her way to speak very often, but when she does talk, she doesn’t hold back. She is a loud-mouth when prompted, and among her peers she doesn’t bother to censor herself. Hardened from that childhood of hearing taunt after taunt, degrading whisper after degrading whisper, Izumo doesn’t fear any words that might be thrown back at her… to an extent. When Bon made the comment, “You really are a nasty piece of work,” Izumo readily and nonchalantly retorted with, “I’m perfectly aware of that, thank you, and?” But when he went on to say how that sort of attitude would drive people away, she paused and looked considerably affected by it. Before that, she had had a private confrontation with Paku, who had essentially told her the exact same thing about her attitude. Before then, it had never bothered Izumo – in fact, she seemed to prefer such a harsh attitude, since it kept most people far enough away that she wouldn’t ever have to listen to their whispers again – but after hearing her very own best friend express such sentiments, it had shattered her perceptions considerably. Since then, Izumo has been shown to slowly but surely open up a little more, as well as be a little more considerate in terms of her words and actions.

She is a very driven young woman, evidenced in her status as the class’ best student. Her self-confidence is a defining trait, which makes her a great candidate for a Tamer. She is honest to anyone who will listen (and sometimes to those who refuse to) and even to herself. Her self-preservation and confidence are what drives her, as well as her desire to grow strong enough to protect herself and those she cares about. She can be very antagonistic at times, rising easily to baits and just as easily casting them herself. Many of her class’ punishments have actually been a direct result from confrontations with other classmates she has either started or continued. She is simply too stubborn to back down and too haughty to let a perfectly good taunt slide.

Very few have been fortunate enough to see the softer side of her. As harsh and critical and unmerciful as she can be, she has also proven to be infallibly loyal and faithful to those she deems worthy of it. When Paku confessed wariness and reservations about remaining in the Exorcist Academy, Izumo was quick to vow to be strong and smart enough to protect them both. When their other classmates began to draw away from Rin after it was revealed that he was, in fact, Satan’s son, Izumo was the only one to sit beside him and treat him as she has always been. There are not many people that she allows herself to open up to, but to those that she has, she has proven to be just as protective of them as she is of herself.

Abilities/Powers: Izumo is what is known as a Tamer in her canon’s universe. Tamers are a classification of Exorcists that can summon and control demons using magical circles either drawn on the ground or on slips of paper, with the added application of the Tamer's blood. Tamers are said to be very rare among Exorcists, for not only do Tamers require natural skill, but they must also have strong spiritual fortitude in order to control the demons they summon. If at any time a Tamer lacks confidence or force of will, the demons can always turn on them. Though she is still technically an Esquire (that is, a student in Exorcist cram school who has passed the Esquire Authorization Exam, she has already proven to be a formidable Tamer. On her first try alone, she was able to summon and command two Kitsune demons, named Mike and Uke. She also possesses great skill and knowledge in their many uses, able to use the demons to fight, summon sacred wine, and complete other such tasks for her.

Sample Entry:
[ at first, a sound - soft and derisive, a mere exhalation of breath that sounds both unimpressed and concerned. a moment later, an image flickers on to the network, streaming a video broadcast live. it's a young woman, holding her cell phone out at arm's length, a deep frown set on her face before, a second later, she's breaking out into a high, girlish laugh. ]

Funny! Hilarious! Good job, you got me real good. [ and then her expression clears entirely, looking about as far from amused as a person can get. ] Is that what you want to hear?

[ did the temperature just drop around here...? ]

Joke's over now. I don't have time for whatever it is you think you're getting out of this. I have things to do, so cut it out before I make you.

[ she lets that sink in for a second before the video cuts off. ]

Sample Entry Two:
Once the video was over and Izumo was sure there was no one around to hear her, she let out a sharp, stifled whimper. Without the network seeing her, without any eyes to judge and consider her weak, she shivered, eyes darting around the quiet room she'd woken up to find herself in. It didn't look like any place she recognized, definitely nothing from Kyoto, or even the Academy.

An impromptu training session, maybe? No, that'd be stupid - they were in the middle of a crisis in Kyoto, and even if they were mere Esquires, every hand was necessary when it came to taking down - or at least containing - the Impure King.

It didn't make sense. She shouldn't be here. Yet here she was.

"...whatever." It didn't sound as convicted as she would have liked, but the intent was there. She might be stuck somewhere else right now, but like hell she was going to let it stay that way for long.

Character Name: Mako
Canon: Legend of Korra
Canon Point: Mid point of End Game, before the final scenes.
Background/History: LoK wiki
Previous Game History: N/A
Personality: Mako is a very serious person, being responsible for raising and protecting his brother from a very young age. Compared to Bolin’s easy going and flirtatious personality, Mako is distant and cold at first. He doesn’t tend to react well to people trying to get very close to him and Bolin, and it takes proving that they have something to offer him that would make it worthwhile. With Korra, it’s her ability to waterbend, which keeps them in the pro-bending tournament. With Asami, it’s that she’s charming, and willing to provide him food at a fancy restaurant for free, though it certainly didn’t hurt that she was willing to steamroll over any of his objections.

Mako is very dedicated and loyal to his brother, willing to go to any extreme to save him from his own stupidity, including impersonating Equalist supporters to try and save him. He tries to measure his advice with him, and tends to take Bolin’s outbursts in stride. He takes his responsibility as Bolin’s protector seriously. And he’s rather attached to the scarf that he wears, it being the last memento he has of his father. Wherever he goes, the scarf goes with him.

His control of his emotions is top notch, as he has the ability to lightning bend, which is an insanely difficult form of fire bending, and only those with the most control of their emotions can master it.

However, despite mastering control of his emotions, this does not necessarily mean that he has a good grasp on why he feels a certain way. Due to the lifestyle of poverty that he and his brother lived, Mako very often set aside his own wants and desires, as well as any reservations he had about what he was doing, to ensure that he and his brother were able to survive, even if not necessarily comfortably. So, what he has in control, he lacks almost completely in understanding.

This is especially noticeable when you look at his approach to his relationship with Asami and Korra—instead of realizing and acknowledging his feelings for Korra and having open and honest communication with Asami, he defaults to not wanting to deal with it until the ‘ideal time’ though he wouldn’t honestly be able to tell you when that ideal time is.

Abilities/Powers: Mako is a firebender, which means he can essentially create fire with various bending moves, that are usually based off of martial arts stances-- however Mako's personal style leans towards scrappy, and is based more on boxing than on the traditional firebending. Despite that, he has a lot of talent with firebending, and doesn't even have to perform bending moves to use his firebending.

He can use the 'breath of fire' ability, which is basically what it sounds like: breathing fire. He also is able to lightningbend, which goes back into the control of his emotions that he has. Lightningbending is extremely difficult to master, but Mako doesn't really have a problem with performing it, even if he does so only rarely, and when shocking someone is more effective than throwing fire at their faces.

He also has above average speed and strength. He shows no problem lifting his brother and carrying him back to the bending arena, even though his brother does have some significant muscle on him, but his key strength is really on his speed and flexibility. It's what his scrappy style attempts to maximize.
Sample Entry: Sample 1, Sample 2, note this is memory loss'd Mako ;;
Sample Entry Two: Mako exhaled, trying to recount the places that he could go to lose track of time for a few hours. But as he ticked them off, he had a reason to avoid them waiting in the wings. He ended up pissing off the owner of that club the last time he was there, a bar was out of the question since there was a match tomorrow, and lately his old haunts had Triads crawling everywhere, so it was better to just stay away. Unfortunately. He needed to avoid the places with gambling-- not because he was likely to gamble, but because it'd just put him in a worse mood than he already was in.

He rubbed his temples. He and Bolin really needed to work out a system for this rather than just finding out at the last second. If he could plan on Bolin's crazy fangirls being there, he wouldn't be stuck tracing a path through various neighborhoods in Republic City for a few hours, or at least a long enough time for said fangirl to go away.

Unfortunately, he was fairly certain Bolin didn't necessarily plan on finding someone every game. Mako paused. No, wait, he was the older brother. He could set some ground rules on this subject, right? No fangirls in the locker room.

... But that was an awkward conversation he wasn't sure he actually wanted to have. Great.

Character Name: Dean Winchester
Canon: Supernatural
Canon Point: 4x21- When the Levee Breaks
Background/History: Here we go.
Previous Game History: N/A

Personality:

During the first season of the show, Dean is mostly portrayed as a young man with a very healthy amount of humor ready for display at any given moment. He often makes light of situations this way, no matter how futile things might appear at the given time though. As is, during the beginning of Dean's and Sam's hunting career together again, Dean is a lot more confident, outspoken and alive, in more ways than one.

As said, Dean likes to joke around a lot. He has a habit of poking fun at almost anything, always drawing comparisons between people and situations by referring to popular pop culture things and people. Even when serious, Dean isn't able to completely kick the habit, though it is during times like this that he resorts to simpler means of humor like ridiculous and insulting nicknames. As an example he often calls Uriel, an Angel, 'Junkless.'

Sam is Dean's main source of energy and it is in the earlier days that Dean truly believes himself to be capable of keeping his younger brother out of harm and serving as Sam's guardian against anything and everything. He relishes the time he gets to spend with Sam during their hunts, this being the closest to family he has at the moment. Dean doesn't like to show his weakness' though, hardly ever actually telling Sam how he feels.

It is only under crucially critical times that Dean truly opens up and this being also hardly for anyone else but Sam. Even then the information --the thoughts, feelings and whatever else is on his mind-- has to be pried out of Dean and only a few can accomplish that. He'd rather cause an awkward situation by changing the subject if confronted by a out right question about his feelings.

The first major blow to Dean's usually confident and smiley-self is when his father, John Winchester, dies. Dean's anguish over this is very, very clear though he denies any attempts made by Sam to talk about it, this thus causing him to take out his anger in a different way; killing more supernatural beings, and doing so in more brutal methods. He also lashes out more, his anger building faster as he tail-spins from everything he's feeling since the death of his father.. His judgment is clouded and the world around him seems more black and white than ever before, making hunting a lot more simpler and inhuman. Slowly though, Dean is able to come to terms with John's death, letting his older self back-- though never truly being who he was back when his father was alive.

When Dean is pulled out of Hell by Castiel, he comes back broken. There is no denying that Dean isn't as strong as he was before, his confidence having been beaten to almost a breaking point. He is a lot more careful with his decisions and a lot more protective of Sam. He is also a lot more scared; for Sam, for himself and for the world. Having experienced Hell, he does not want to let it break loose on earth, making his judgment frail, not wanting to make hasty decisions.

Still, even whilst suffering with the heavy burdens on his life, Dean tries to keep a positive appearance, though with time-- and to anyone closer to Dean, it is very obvious that he isn't all right. Ready to help people with supernatural problems, Dean tries to keep his personal feelings away from the job, and it is when faced with heavy problems that Dean tries to tune out all of his emotions; both positive and negative ones, this making him cool, calm and efficient.

With the war raging on between demons and angels, it's becoming harder and harder for Dean to just bounce back to his normal self, his character growing more tired and thus colder with each passing event.

This becomes even more apparent during the next year, once Lucifer walks free from his cage. Things happen -- bad things, that change Dean a lot. A sort of cold harshness mixed with worry and guilt over doing the right thing opposed to what he wants to do makes itself apparent in him as the decisions he and his brother make affect the very outcome of both their lives and pretty much the rest of the world. Over the course of the year, he starts to care less and less, even once hitting a point where he simply wants to give up. It's only thanks to Sam and Cas that he doesn't, but never before, really, has he hit such a low, and although he does finally get out of that slump, it's only barely.

After the Apocalypse, after Sam jumps into the Pit with Lucifer and Michael, Dean seeks to keep his promise to his brother and try to live a normal life. With a year spent as a civilian, Dean undergoes probably the most drastic change in personality since...forever. He calms down a lot and matures, learning about a different kind of family life with Lisa and Ben. During all this, while a lot of mellower sides are brought out in him, the hunter in Dean also dulls and is forgotten for a while-- until it's forced to resurface once more. And although he does, at least to some extent enjoy the year he spends with Lisa and Ben, there's still that undertone of depression in him. Things simply aren't the same, aren't good at all for him when he knows Sam is most likely suffering down in Hell.

Things are difficult for Dean when Sam comes back, and some of the harsher things in the life of a hunter suddenly seem too black and white to him. His past-self clashes with the person he is today, though he tries to keep both in a balance. It's not always easy though, and thus he worries and stresses a lot since he has been out of the game for a while. The stress and worry over his brother finally find a more sensible sours when he finds out that his brother doesn't have a soul, thus Sam's weird behavior. Everything makes a bit more sense, but none of his stress really calms down. His brother would sell him for a soda if he was really thirsty, and seems to overall just be about anyone else but his brother Sam.

What finally, and for the first time in a very, very long period, gets a real, genuine smile from Dean, and has him appearing a lot lighter, and just happier, is when Sam finally gets his soul back. Though it doesn't last long, with the world under a new threat, while Dean is on a hunt with the newly soul-restored Sam, he acts way more like himself from the past. He smiles, jokes and sort of seems to mold back into his old self; the annoying but caring older brother he was in the first few years of hunting (seasons 1-3), before the loom of the oncoming Apocalypse.

Abilities/Powers:

Hunting; As said, Dean is a hunter. He knows how to track an enemy without being seen, knows how to lure them out to begin with and not blow his cover. He has nerves of steel when the situation calls for it, and he takes his job very seriously. He's been in the game for most of his life, from the moment his dad started training him for the role of a hunter, to the moment he took on his first hunt -- up to the very end of the Apocalypse.

Dean knows his job. He knows how to deal with his prey, and even if a new creature of some kind pops up, he's very good at figuring out the hows and why's of eradicating the new species. His knowledge on mythology and such is very extensive, and along the ways he has even picked up a few skills in spells himself. Fro example, he knows how to use the angel banishing spell.

He knows how to handle a hunt, from the very early stages of purely asking questions, to finally taking out whatever creature crossed his path. He can be stealthy, and come up with last-minute changes to plans that end up working out, such as a sudden to find an escape route, or change tactics on how to handle the creature he's hunting. His tactical skills often step in as well in the form of being able to read people easily, and knowing how to manipulate them into whatever role he wants them to play.

He's a con-man, able to lie and deceive his way to information that may be inaccessible to a normal person. His skills as a hunter have also lead to him being very skilled at quite a few things that wouldn't sit well with the law. He can pick locks, break into tightly secured buildings and hot-wire cars. Dean also knows how police departments and other such systems work, being able to both impersonate them and avoid them when needed with surprising ease.

Another trait picked up from his father which also plays into his life as hunter, is how well-versed he is in the skills of a mechanic. Dean keeps his '67 Chevy Impala in top condition and has an extensive knowledge on automobiles and engines alike.

Weapon handling; As a hunter, Dean knows his firearms and other monster-handling equipment better than he knows most day-to-day items. From a very early age, Dean was left with the task of looking after his brother while their dad went off on a hunt. John Winchester would give his eldest son a gun and the orders to look after Sam, and to shoot first, ask later. This lead to Dean knowing how to use a gun at a very early age, and by the time he was 11, he'd built his own gun.

This also lead to Dean growing up very skilled with melee weapons, and he is also an exceptionally good shot. He is often seen with weapons such as a chromed Colt 1911, presumably a gun he got from his father, and also a Desert Eagle which is often rounded up with salt bullets. Dean also knows how to handle a sniper rifle, and a machete-- and other large knives and blades.

When all else fails, don't count him out as being uncreative, for Dean'll use just about anything as a weapon if the situation turns grim like that.

Hand-to-hand combat; When things get a little too up close and personal, or he doesn't want to hurt whoever he is fighting, Dean often goes with hand-to-hand combat. It is never revealed what kind of style he uses, but from what is seen, Dean is very skilled at subduing and disarming a person with no weapons of his own. He is also able to take on supernatural creatures this way, though they might be physically stronger than him.

Torture; While in Hell, Dean was Alistair's student, and learned the skills of inflicting torture. He knows how to inflict the absolute maximum amount of pain on a person without having them die, and was hailed as a skilled torturer.

Sample Entry: Dean Winchester, ladies and gentlemen.
Sample Entry Two:

Dean's pretty sure he hadn't had enough to drink the night before to warrant waking up in an unknown place, not when he'd been too busy nursing a bruised and beaten body thanks to his little brother. Let's not even talk about the wounded pride. But Sam isn't his main concern for once, no, the unfamiliar place around him is quickly triggering alarm bells in his head.

He's up and about in no time, brushing aside the way his entire body hurts in favor of getting to the bottom of where the hell am I?

"This better be freaking' good.." He'd been damn busy trying to stop his brother from becoming the very thing they hunt, while the last of the 66 Seals was well on its way to being broken. Life is more than dandy for one Dean Winchester, and he really doesn't need a pit-stop at Creepville right now. But as is his life, he doesn't get much say in these matters and the first door he finds is one he's currently busting through.

"Anyone in here? Hello?" Of course there's not answer, wouldn't want things to be too easy.

The next few doors lead to similar results; nothing. By now he's starting to wish he at least had something to fight, frustration bubbling under his skin as the empty town continues to stretch around him. Honestly, if the angels or demons wanted to teach him some sort of lesson, they could've done with something more creative.

Character Name: Sam Winchester
Canon: Supernatural
Canon Point: 1x18
Background/History: one and two
Personality: Sam's personality is deeply defined by several key events that shaped his life and his psyche. When Sam was only six months old, a demon named Azazel, or the yellow-eyed demon, came into his nursery and fed him his blood. Sam's mother, Mary, interrupted the demon and was murdered for it. That murder sent the Winchesters on a lifelong quest for vengeance. Sam's father moved them from place to place, living in cheap motels on credit card frauds. Until he was eight years old, Sam was told that his mother had died in a car accident and that his father was a traveling salesman, but being a bright and naturally curious child he found that hard to believe and read his father's journal that explained all the monstrosities he had faced. Since his father – John – was never around he confronted his older brother Dean about it, but being raised the way he had, even at that young age his reaction to learning that monsters are real was to go to bed early for the night and hide his tears; Winchester men were never big on sharing their emotions. However Sam never quite fit in with his family. He always felt like an outsider looking in, both out in the world of normal people, where he wasn't allowed to remain for longer than his father's local hunts took place but always tried to make friends in these short escapades to normality, and with his own family where he felt trapped; bound to them by the murder of a mother he didn't even remember. In a choice between the two in the past and in his current canon point, Sam prefers normality, and struggles to achieve it. Since he couldn't attend a regular school he assigned himself his own reading lists, he got into Stanford and fought with his father to go to school despite the fact he was practically disowned for it. Sam has a selfish way of seeing the world; he didn't look right or left to try to understand his family's motivations, the pain and fears his father dealt with, but instead only concentrated on the wrongs done to him. He acted his age, as opposed to his older brother who spent his life putting his family first. At school he made friends, met a girl he was planning to marry – Jessica – and had an interview scheduled for law school. He was all set to live a regular life cut away from his family and their gruesome line of work. However, Jessica's murder changed all that.

After Jessica was murdered, Sam saw one thing and one thing only before his eyes – revenge. He became blinded by it, and could think only of finding his father so that he could join him on the hunt for the yellow eyed demon. He was willing to ignore other people in need of help on the way, with Dean serving as his sole anchor to reality outside his narrow worldview. He became almost consumed with rage and guilt – ready to sacrifice himself in a heartbeat for the sake of his vengeance, ready to snap at people for not understanding what lurked in the dark and more than anything, ready to struggle against his father every step of the way because he blames him for the life he and his brother lead and vicariously deep down although he knows it's irrational, that life led to Jessica's murder. It was easy for Sam to resent his father, because they had always butted heads, probably because the two were so alike – very opinionated, very stubborn, and very easily obsessed. Sam is the sort of man who always thinks he knows the answer; he's used to being the golden boy, the genius, which is why it frustrates him so deeply when he's being overruled, ignored or kept out of the loop. That mindset also leads him to believe that no one can understand him, that he can't confide certain things even in Dean. Secrecy has always been a part of Sam's nature, but it grows with canon; the more questionable the things he dabbles with are the more jealous he is of his privacy. Despite all his guilt, he's always known what he's worth, what he brings to the table, and the more he's sheltered, the more he struggles against it. He has very little patience for nonsense and it's for a reason that Dean fondly calls him 'bitch'.

Hunting with Dean, Sam found his people skills extremely handy – Dean would joke that with his "puppy face" Sam could get people to believe anything. In truth Sam has a way of connecting with people, empathizing with them and gaining their trust – deep down, he's a genuine nice guy and that trait flows through. Additionally, until the addition of Bobby to the show the burden of research fell mostly on Sam's shoulders, however being a studious person by nature he took to it immediately and efficiently. Sam and Dean's main way of coping with the horrors they've witnessed is having a healthy sense of humor, usually directed at each other. Sam's humor is mostly sarcastic and somewhat childish – pranks such as gluing Dean's hand to his beer bottle crack him up.

Jessica's murder brought, in addition to the obvious horror and regression to hunting, a new dimension of horror into Sam's life – shortly before her death he began having nightmares about her very murder which then played out before his eyes. Sam blamed himself for not believing his vision – not standing by her side when she needed him to protect her. For that reason he also became deeply obsessed with those visions – desperate to save whoever they showed him, desperate to avoid another repeat of Jessica. These visions led him to Max – a boy who shared a different version of his own story – his mother was murdered by the yellow eyed demon in his nursery at the age of 6 months after he was given demon's blood – although of that detail he was yet unaware – and had gained psychic abilities due to it that began exactly when Sam's visions had. The encounter with Max terrified and shocked Sam, and his obsession and fear of his own abilities grew tremendously because Max had taken his own abilities to the darkest of places and Sam was horrified of ending up the same way. He desperately tried to save Max partly because his moral code wouldn't let him abandon a human being – Sam came back into hunting after a break of two years which he had spent in a normal surrounding; that and his natural aversion to the hunter's lifestyle made him much softer than most hunters – more humane - and partly because if he saw Max as a monster, he had to see himself as a monster and he needed to believe that he could be saved, that he could be a hero and not a monster.

At the end of season one, the Winchesters believed they closed in on the yellow eyed demon, and Sam believed that his life as a hunter was approaching its end ("Dean, we are a family. I'd do anything for you. But things will never be the way they were before….I don't want them to be. I'm not gonna live this life forever. Dean when this is all over, you're gonna have to let me go my own way." –season 1 episode 16), but as they closed in on him later (shortly after my chosen canon point, but it demonstrates the depth of Sam's desperation) Dean had to physically restrain Sam from running into a burning building and committing suicide in an attempt to kill the demon. Sam's obsession with killing the demon outweighed any form of reason in his mind. At that point however Dean managed to get through to him and when the demon possessed their father Sam didn't shoot him despite the fact the man had begged him to because he had come around to Dean's point of view – that there was something more important than revenge – and that was family. Dean is the one man capable of bringing Sam back from his own inner darkness, but even he is faced with much resistance from Sam; the younger Winchester always struggled with keeping his horrors to himself, only divulging them to his brother when he had absolutely no other choice.

Sam is methodical and organized, both traits that help him immensely with his research. That point is best demonstrated in episode 3x11 because he was left on his own; his organization is usually lost behind Dean's clutter otherwise. In that episode, Sam spends his days running down every possible lead one by one. He remembers every little supposedly insignificant detail in the time loop he was trapped in from the exact words Dean used to taunt him to the flavor of syrup the man at the bar puts on his pancakes. When he was pulled out of the loop into a life without Dean, Sam's life narrowed into a methodical hunt in which there was no room for social connections or distractions. His motel rooms were meticulous, clean and organized, and so was the arsenal in his trunk. Sam is very jealous of his privacy, his few possessions and their organization; he and Dean share everything but he cannot stand it when his brother's mess invades his personal space.

Abilities/Powers: Supernaturally speaking, when Sam was 6 months old he was given demon's blood, which enables him to access some psychic abilities. At this point in canon all he´s able to do is be the passive receiver of futuristic visions concerning the demon whose blood he drank, or more precisely, his victims, and once he was able to telekinetically move a closet that had him locked in, however that has been a very desperate situation and although he found himself in plenty of other desperate situations since, he has never been able to recreate that feat. The demon's blood also made him immune to the psychic attacks of demons and other people who were given demon's blood like himself, and able to perceive the presence of other supernatural entities like ghosts and poltergeists at times. Later in canon he learns to do many other things but they are connected to the consumption of more demon's blood which shouldn't be of importance in game however to detail it- he became able to exorcise and even kill demons with his mind, as well as amplify his telekinetic abilities.

Naturally speaking, Sam was raised as a hunter. He´s learned how to defend himself probably since he was old enough to walk, in a range of techniques from empty hand combat to the handling of fire arms and a verity of cold weapons; knives, axes, ect. After rejoining the family business with his brother Dean, Sam improved those skills greatly; the first half of season 1 is mostly made out of Sam getting caught and Dean rescuing him, but with time he improves and even saves Dean a few times. These skills include Latin spells, the painting of Devil's Traps and the use of talismans, however they are all a matter of knowledge rather than supernatural ability – anyone can learn to use them; Sam simply has a few memorized, mostly the devil's trap and exorcism spells.

Hunting however requires more than mere fighting skills, therefore Sam is also an expert tracker and researcher. It usually falls on him, especially at the beginning of canon, to find jobs and discover which monster lurked in the dark. In addition, hunters of the supernatural play a double role of both hunters and prey- to the very things they hunt, to law enforcers, and at times even to other hunters, therefore Sam has also learned how to make himself scarce. He´s an excellent hacker, he knows how to commit credit card frauds to procure finances, how to fake ids, how to break and enter, pick locks and so on and so forth. And of course, Sam is an extraordinary liar, passing himself as a priest, FBI agent, or whatever the job requires him to be.

Performing some basic medical procedures is also crucial knowledge for hunters; sanitation, pulling bullets out of wounds, sewing wounds, applied pressure in the right spots, bandaging, and all forms of first aid.

Sample Entry: Right here!

Sample Entry Two:
Sam didn't remember falling asleep, and that was enough to sound the alarm in his head. And speaking of his head, it felt like it was about to explode. Could it be a side effect of the Shtriga's attack? It did drain some of his 'life force', so maybe he should have expected this…did he faint? His hand reached up to rub his temples and pinch the bridge of his nose. A deep breath, and another…this wasn't working, he needed an aspirin.

"Dean?" He croaked out, his eyes still shut, expecting his brother to be somewhere around. When moments passed with no reply, annoyance struck roots in his mind. If he left him at some motel to suffer through this on his own so he could go out and get laid there will be a bitchy hell to pay. "Dean?" he tried again, pulling himself upwards, his eyes fluttering open.

What he saw before him made him jump upright in bed. What the hell is this. This wasn't like any motel he and Dean ever crashed at; for one there were way too many damn beds. They always got private rooms, in their line of work privacy's a necessity, they don't even let the maids go in their rooms, so the last thing they'll ever do is rent a place with four other people! There had to be an explanation for this, and when your last name is Winchester that explanation could be either of the following two – 1. Dean thinks he's funny again. 2. Something evil is going on.

He jumped off his bed, ignoring the constant thumping of his brain complaining about having to function in these conditions, and made his way to the nearest bed. The man lying in it was unfamiliar to him, and as far as he knew Dean had no friends to call on to prank him. Even if he did go to the trouble of speaking to men outside the hunting game, he definitely wouldn't make a good enough impression to convince them to help him with this. No, this was way too elaborate to be one of Dean's schemes, the guy is a jerk but he's not that creative – if he woke up bald or itching he could blame his brother but as it stands – it seemed about time to get really worried. So the reasonable conclusion seemed to be that these other people were brought here just like himself. Are they captive? Can they leave? And where the hell is Dean – was he somewhere out there or was he tearing up a town trying to find him? First thing first, he had to ascertain these people's condition, so he leaned down over the bed and placed his hand on the shoulder of the man occupying it, shaking him lightly.

"Hey – wake up – are you ok?"

Character Name: Anders
Canon: Dragon Age (Awakening and 2)
Canon Point: At the end of Act 2.

Background/History: The Dragon Age Wikia. Note also that Anders' canon Hawke will be an aggressive and sarcastic male warrior, and I'll consider Anders to have been rivalled by him (and not romanced, though Anders showed interest). His canon Hero of Ferelden is Elissa Cousland, who recruited him into the Grey Wardens.
Personality: Anders has always despised feeling trapped. He tried to escape from the circle at least seven times, and didn't give up even after he was put in isolation for a year. He hates the Circle and what it stands for too much to ever settle down there, even at the risk of being executed or made tranquil (have all his dreams and emotions severed, leaving someone an empty but very cooperative shell). In fact, he nearly was executed at some point, but even that was not enough to stop him wanting to escape. The Grey Wardens recruited him to save him, but he later on ran away from them as well, when they took his cat away from him.

His time with the Grey Wardens did affect him, though. He enjoyed travelling with the Hero of Ferelden (who gave him the cat in the first place), and had, in fact, offered to help out from the start. And when Vigil's Keep, the Grey Warden's fortress, was attacked, Anders gave it his all to protect it. It wasn't working for the Grey Wardens he hated, or having to fight for their cause; he only left after they started controlling his life. That, and all the travelling in the Deep Roads - giant tunnels below ground - they had to do.

What affected Anders most during this period was his encounter with the spirit Justice. While Anders can be incredibly loyal to those he cares about - explaining why he fought so hard to protect Vigil's Keep - he has never been interested in fighting for the sake of all mages. He might hate the circle, but it's risky enough just trying to save himself. Justice kept questioning him on this, though, asking why he never did anything for his fellow mages, and this slowly started to affect the way Anders saw the world. So when he met Justice again later, he agreed to let the spirit possess him, so that they could work together.

The two, unfortunately, had a negative affect on each other once joined. Anders is now more determined than ever to fight for all mages, but his anger at the current situation warped Justice into a spirit of vengeance instead. Anders realised this could potentially make him into a threat, but their common cause was too important for him to regret his decision. It did affect him, though; while previously Anders had been the type to make jokes in nearly every situation, approaching everything with sarcasm, after this he grew more pessimistic, more withdrawn. He'll still make jokes, but they're more rare, as he knows the situation he's in won't end well - and this time it's not just him it'll go badly for. But if he can help people in the process, it's a necessary sacrifice, is it not?

The cause has now turned into a Cause as well, and Anders talks about nothing else most of the time. He's even writing a manifesto, leaving copies upon copies of it around, which is impressive for a world where the printer most likely hasn't been invented yet. And while he'll stubbornly insist that being possessed by a spirit of Justice is not the same as being possessed by a demon, when he opens up to the people he trusts, he tends to warn them away from him. He's willing to go far for what he believes in, but he's not willing to drag down the people he cares about as well.

Anders is someone who believes in helping, not just when it comes to mages. He opens up a clinic in Dark Town - the slums in the city - helping refugees and the poor there. And he'll fight to protect his clinic, even knowing he'd risk his own life doing so. His own life means less now that he has Justice with him.

Meeting and travelling with Hawke has necessarily affected him as well, though. Hawke never had much time for Anders' beliefs, and told him off when he went too far. When Anders gets too angry, Justice takes over, and at one point this resulted in him nearly killing an innocent mage. He would have, if Hawke hadn't been there to help him. And being constantly told off by someone he respects makes him hesitate - though not enough to back down entirely. It confuses him, how much he respects someone who is everything that he hates, but he is inexplicably drawn to him regardless.

To summarise: Anders is sarcastic, but far less so than he used to be. He doubts himself, which only makes him more determined to aid his Cause. And he is possessed by a spirit which is strongly affecting his mind and making it hard, in some cases, to think clearly. In particularly emotional situations, the spirit takes over entirely.

Anders is used to being on his own in any situation. He says that in the circle, love could only ever be a game, as honestly caring about someone to that extent only gave the templars more power. He has a hard time letting anyone in due to this. Even so, he's grown attached to Hawke, someone who he should hate more than anything, and tends to listen to his opinions at the very least. He's also forgetting more and more how to relax and have fun, thanks to Justice's influence.

Abilities/Powers: Anders is a very talented healer. He can restore health, and even revive fallen allies in battle; and he even has abilities that cause those around him to regenerate faster. This is a temporary effect that also stops him from using any offensive spells while it is active. He can also produce a barrier to increase damage resistance.

His offensive spells focus on fire and ice. The latter can slow enemies down, and even freeze them. Similar to his healing skills, he also has skills that boosts the attack of those fighting alongside him. Other abilities include using telekinetic force to knock enemies over or keep them from moving forward; or to crush them beneath a "prison" of the same. He is also capable of temporarily paralyzing enemies.

Since being made Grey Warden he also has the ability to sense Dark Spawn - the mindless monsters of the Dragon Age world - and will know when an Arch-Demon is gathering power. He also gets the bonus of nightmares.

He is only capable of using so many abilities in a row before needing to rest or consume a lyrium potion. A mage draws their power from the Fade, which is where human and mages go where they sleep. It is also where spirits and demons live. If a mage uses too much magic it'll sap their own life force, and might kill them. The lyrium helps them connect to the Fade for extra power. Even when his mana is depleted, though, Anders does have a basic attack he can use at any time, which is also ranged. He essentially shoots out a burst of magic from his staff, but it has no other effect than dealing damage, and isn't particularly powerful. He also has a fairly weak constitution.

Sample Entry: voice testing at dear_mun
Sample Entry Two: Anders held the strange device - the phone up to his mouth, only to find that he didn't know what to say. He had so much of his manifesto written back in Kirkwall, so many arguments perfectly lined up, and yet here he found it impossible to come up with a single one. It was the lack of writing implements, he was sure; it was different to speak into the air. Or into the phone, in this case, which he was still sure was in some way magic; he'd never seen anything similar without a demon being involved.

Still, he felt it necessary to continue: "Many liken mages to a rabid animal, but this would only be correct for mages currently possessed by a demon. Locking up mages for potentially falling to temptetion is like locking up all dogs because one of them might catch a disease. And you would be heartless not to consider it worse to do so to a human being."

He turned off the phone again, giving himself a moment to gather his thoughts. He knew, of course, that his manifesto technically wasn't needed in this world. There were no templars, and no mages being persecuted. Instead there were others who needed his help, and his efforts were better spent towards freeing them from this city. But no matter what, he felt that it was important not to forget his work from home; he was determined to get back there some day, and he wouldn't forgive himself if he forgot any arguments because he neglected to note them down somehow. And more important than that, it let him forget for a moment that they'd all been kidnapped. It was almost meditative.

And of course, Hawke might eventually show up, if both Merrill and the Hero of Ferelden were here. And speaking of Merrill--

Anders switched the phone back on, broadcasting to everyone: "Mages who resort to blood magic are a danger to themselves and to others, and need to be locked up. However, the majority of mages do not display this weakness, and are of no threat at all. Anger and distrust should be directed where it is deserved, and not indiscriminately broadcast."

Character Name: Uni
Canon: Katekyou Hitman Reborn!
Canon Point: Around Chapter 254 I believe, just after she's woken up, but before she goes to seek the help of the Vongola family!
Background/History: here!
Personality: Uni, at first glance, seems all puff and fairy floss. She's a tiny little girl with a gentle smile and not much substance to her, after all; it's easy to underestimate those sorts.

However, her lack of physical strength is more than made up in mental and emotional mettle. Her entire life has been centred around the personal ideology of self-sacrifice for others' happiness, and she will do everything in her power to make things right, and to help those she cares about. The idea of hurting others horrifies her, but will be taken as an absolute last resort (and even then, it's indirect sacrifice for the greater good).

Given that her age and build are huge hindrances to being a successful mafioso, Uni relies heavily on people's better natures, as well as her charm. Her smile has been noted to be her greatest feature, winning over allies and ensuring that she's never really alone. Her kindness cannot be discounted, however; when given the chance to save herself from a fatal curse (later in canon), she readily concedes the chance for the sake of her allies. It's this that keeps people on her side and draws them in, disarming most (but certainly not all) enough with relative ease.
Her love and care for others comes from her mother Aria, certainly; the woman led a double life in raising her daughter, but they definitely had an affectionate relationship and are even said to have the same sort of presence.

For all of her charms and innocence, Uni is certainly not above making enemies. Her powers alone make her an easy target for less honorable elements, and her lifestyle as a mafia boss ensures that there are no small number of people willing to throw her down from her throne. Although she might be considered to have a cheat in her interactions with people, that doesn't ensure that everything will go to plan, naturally.
Her age plays a part in this too; she's innately curious, trying her best to see the best in and get to know people who might not always appreciate being read like a picture book. This, combined with her desire to keep her loved ones out of danger by keeping her finger on the pulse can lead to awkward situations and even a little prying, if she's sure that there's not too much danger involved.

The worst part about her absolute desire to keep people happy is that she will often prioritise this over her own happiness most of the time. Her own life and famiglia have been used as bargaining chips, though with much difficulty on her part. In the case of her life, it's been sacrificed several times over to protect others in various alternate universes; due to her curse-shortened lifespan, it just isn't something that's worth as much as it should be.
This was accepted long ago, when she first found out about her powers and the curse they held. While the thought of dying still scares the daylights out of her and isn't something she'll do lightly, it's still something she'll grimly accept when necessary.

Despite her sugary sweet nature, Uni has some spice to her; she's given towards gentle teasing to those she cares about (and who don't put her on a pedestal and oblige her into polite words), and flat out disdain of those seemingly beyond her reach. This can be seen when she calls a boy 'more ordinary than I expected' upon their first meeting, despite being well aware that he'd later harm her and cause much agony in the future. It does take a while for her to get over this however, and to realise that hey, it's alright to actually be a kid and to joke around.

All in all, Uni’s basically a kind, sad little girl who would do anything to save the world and those she loves.
At any cost.

Part 2!

[personal profile] sky_princess 2012-10-09 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
Abilities/Powers: Uni's primary ability is to read hearts and minds of those around her; this has expanded into enabling her to see the future. It can be assumed (since we never explicitly see it in canon, just her after having had visions) that her foretelling the future is never consciously done, since they're certainly not things she wants to see. In fact, most of Uni's premonitions seem to be negative in some form. However, her reading hearts and minds is probably more of an ability that she can summon by will; in canon, it's mentioned that at least one person can sense her doing this, though that would probably count as a special case.

She also has the ability to share consciousness with alternate selves, almost enabling her to hop worlds through other Unis in existence (though many of them were wiped out, so this ability has been severely limited in that aspect), and to sense anyone wishing harm to her (only when very close, it seems) by feeling very ill at the time.

Not only that, but using any of her powers (bar sharing consciousness) saps at her lifespan. Visions are assumed to be the most taxing, with heart and mind reading seeming to have happened for long enough that its toll can be assumed to be only slight.

All of her powers can be attributed to both her heritage (a long line of shamanesses doomed to die early) and to the bauble around her neck, a glowing orange pacifier on a pink ribbon. Although her bloodline certainly helped the powers along, without the pacifier she'd certainly be helpless.
Sample Entry: hope this suffices!
Sample Entry Two:It's well into her first stretch that Uni realises she's not actually in the Millefiore base.

Not anywhere she recognises at all, actually. Her heart leaps into her chest as she looks about the room, hastily pulling her cloak tighter 'round her shoulders. Each little cast out into the aether comes back with no reply; there's no thought, no heartbeats, nothing that she can read.

Looks like she's back to basics, or at least until she can pick up on a heartbeat. There's always the slightest possibility that there's someone resistant to her powers, after all (the thought makes her stomach churn).

"Hello?"

Uni scrambles to her feet, shaking the dust from her pristine white and black clothing. "Is anyone out there? ...Gamma? Nosaru? Te--"

There's a clatter that sends her a few centimetres into the air with a muffled shriek. It's laughed off nervously, quietly as she inspects the room she's currently in. Fingers roaming over light switches (thankfully functional), pillows, the hinges of the doors; it all seems normal, but she's too wary and worn out now to not be at least a little suspicious.

"Well, if you won't come out, I'm just going to find someone. There has to be someone who knows where we are so I can get home," she mutters, rubbing one eye and adjusting to being awake, being alive again. "Too much to do."

Character Name: Malik Al'Sayf
Canon: Assassin's Creed
Canon Point: The Second time Altair visits Jerusalem
Background/History: WIKI LINK

Personality:
Having been born and raised an assassin, Malik is a man who has built his life around the assassin's order and its three tenants: To stay your blade form the flesh of the innocent, to hide in plain sight, and to never compromise the brotherhood. These three rules are a constant in his beliefs and actions, and a core part of who he is. They are also a point of honor, so when Altair blatantly disregards these rules at the beginning of the game, it gets him worked up, because it was as if Altair had slapped his beliefs, and one of the things he saw as most important to being an assassin, in the face. (And then Altair went and made everything a million times worse, so Malik's anger became justified.)

Malik is a man who lost a lot all at one time, and yet despite that, he continues on. This shows a lot about who he is. First and foremost, it shows his strength. Not just his physical prowess, but it shows his emotional strength as well. He is a person that will not simply give up because of a loss, he will continue on, and continue doing what he has to. This trait is one that is necessary, especially given his occupation—he is an assassin. He can’t let the losses get the better of him, not when he’s working towards a greater whole.

The second thing is, it shows just how human he is. He’s not just some side-character, always there to aid the protagonist. No, he is very much three dimensional, and is someone capable of becoming angry and holding a grudge. However, he does not let his grudge cloud his judgment, and he is able to see past it. He could have remained spiteful toward Altair for the rest of his life, ignoring the other assassin's personal growth just to dwell on how he'd wronged him in the past. Instead, he sees Altair's growth for what it is, and forgives him for the death of Kadar and the loss of his arm. It takes a while, and it’s not something that is simply swept under the rug or dealt with easily, but by Altair’s third visit to Jerusalem, Malik forgives him.

I mentioned anger up there, but there needs to be some clarification. He does get angry, but he doesn’t lash out like many others would. He’s almost passive aggressive about it, in a way—speaking to those he’s displeased with with harsh words and a scolding tongue. He will pick them apart and tell them exactly where they need improvement—regardless of whether they asked his opinion or not. He’s harsh, and cold, and he doesn’t take attitude from those he doesn’t respect.

Speaking of respect! He’s not the kind of person to respect someone right off the bat. Oh, no, respect has to be earned, even if they’re a higher rank than him. Altair is a prime example of this, as at the start of the game he outranks Malik—and yet despite that, Malik berates and insults him. Going hand in hand with this is his views of people. Once he has an idea as to who they are, it takes a lot to change his perception of them. If he doesn’t like them because they’re arrogant, attention-seeking fools, then not only will it take a lot to get his respect, but it will take time for him to not see them in that light, no matter how quickly or how much they change.

Malik is very intelligent and wise. He’s able to look and see things as a whole instead of many smaller parts, and Altair compliments him on this perceptiveness. He gives good advice, and while he won’t lend aid where it hasn’t been earned or isn’t needed, he’s not someone who would send a person—no matter how much he dislikes them—out on a mission completely blind. He’s serious, cold, and his words are often harsh, but his advice and the things he says are genuine. He’s not someone who would lie just to get even.

Ironically enough, cruelty is not in his nature. He’s an assassin, yes, but he knows that his actions—and the actions of the order on a whole—are done for the good. They go after the wicked, those who wish to rid the world of free will, and that’s it. He would not attack someone for no reason, and he would not kill someone to exact revenge, at least not by his own hand. He did tell Al Mualim that Altair deserved to die, his death in exchange for his brothers. Yet when his elder spared Altair’s life, he didn’t act on his own and try to kill him. He could have! But he didn’t, because he’s not that kind of man.

Lastly, Malik is cautious, careful, and he plans before he acts. He’s not one to be brash, or to rush into things without some plan of attack. He’s very flexible, and can adapt to any unexpected changes or flaws in a plan—after all, one doesn’t know, they can only suspect, and he has to suspect to be wrong every time. He’s confident in what he does, though he is far from being arrogant, and is capable of seeing the flaws in his own actions. He can also be the jealous sort, when it comes to people who have much higher skills than him, and it’s a trait that has caused him grief.

Abilities/Powers:
Malik is human, and has nothing magical or superhuman about him. However! He was raised an assassin, and as such, can be very stealthy. He knows how to blend into crowds, and go about unnoticed, without drawing attention to himself. On top of that, he can climb, jump, and run around on the roofs of buildings like no other. You know, assassin-ing it up and the like.

Sample Entry: Link to a musebox thread
Sample Entry Two:
This city was unfamiliar to him in many, many ways. It was a place teeming with technology, most of it he couldn't even fathom the use for--and most of it broken or unusable anyway, so learning about it all was hardly worth the effort. Yet despite the unfamiliarity of the city, technology, and culture that now surrounded him (both from the setting itself and the people that also found themselves trapped), he adapted to it all surprisingly well.

He was an assassin, after all, adapting was in his nature.

He didn't like being blind to his surroundings, however. Unlike the cities of his home world, he didn't know this city's roads or rooftops, and if he were to ever come under attack, his chance to escape would be greatly diminished by this fact--which didn't sit right with him. He wasn't about to let himself sit around, blind to not only the workings of this place but to the many ways of navigating the city, as well.

And so, he climbs. He's surprisingly quick despite his missing arm, and pulls himself to the roof with relative ease.

There was a great determination, burning inside, for he wanted know this city like the back of his hand, just as he did Masayf and Jerusalem. And if he had any say in the matter, he would.

Other Characters Played: None
Preferred Apartment: Any apartment far from Leon or Wesker.

Character Name: Ada Wong
Canon: Resident Evil
Canon Point: End of RE4, after delivering Wesker the fake Master Plagas sample.
Background/History: Wiki
Personality:

Leon Kennedy: Maybe it's about time to tell me the reason why you’re here?
Ada Wong: Maybe some other time.

The Femme Fatale, Ada is a professional in every aspect.

On the surface Ada is coy, manipulative, detached, and very hard to trust. A perfectionist in both appearance and in her work, Ada knows herself to be high maintenance and indeed she is. Each of her outfits is paired with matching accessories and nothing is ever out of place. And she will wear these outfits of hers even when on assignment, even if the social settings don’t call for it. See: wearing a long dress and heels for a mission in a remote Spanish village. Ada holds both decor and people to her high standards and if they do not meet them, she has a little less respect for them. In her mind, those who strive for quality are worthy of admiration. Not surprisingly, she has a slight aversion to filth, though she’s willing to turn a blind eye if it’s necessary.

When sent in on an assignment, Ada always has a pretty clear idea of the situation. That's because she studies every angle of her mission extensively. From fighting styles to backgrounds, Ada makes sure she knows all she can about each player involved in her missions. And throughout each mission, she picks up on the little details. She mainly sticks to the shadows, choosing when and where to make herself known. When she does, it’s always for a reason as well as always cryptic in her own little fashion.

However, Ada can and will follow her emotions when she's on an assignment, mostly brought out by her bond with Leon S. Kennedy. Though her true allegiance is unknown, she has been known to play on both sides to further her own agenda. When on a mission, Ada will reach her goal no matter what, but she has integrity and some measure of mercy and kindness which can be brought out. She’ll blatantly ignore an order that she feels compromised for following, such as her refusal to kill Leon despite being told numerous times to take care of him. For a spy, these kind of mercies and emotions can and will lead to their downfall.

But one who’s human can only do so much. Ada is a reflective person; she spends a lot of time thinking about events and people in her life. After certain conversations, Ada will slightly turn her head to the side and sigh, signifying that she knows more about something that she can say. Every secret has its time and its place to be revealed, despite what her own feelings may be.

Abilities/Powers:
For the lack in any superhuman abilities, Ada makes up for in natural talent and intelligence.

Ada is a trained assassin: she knows how to infiltrate, she knows how to get her mark, and she knows how to get out of there all without being seen. Unless she actually wants to be seen. Proficient in both firearms and hand to hand, though given the choice she’ll go sniping from a high place before putting herself in the line of fire. When fighting, Ada is very agile, making up a lack of sheer power and a vulnerability to attack with good speed and a complete use of her surroundings. Also professional gymnast, Ada is incredibly talented at performing some very impressive stunts.

Sample Entry:
[The audio clicks on, but no video feed. Those who know her will immediately recognize the face that goes with the voice. Those who don’t? Well, they’ll just have to wait in suspense just a little longer.]

[Of course, normally she wouldn’t bother with any sort of recording. A short message was all she needed. The lack of a text function ruins that little plan almost immediately. Without impersonal means of communicating, she’ll have to play a part to learn what she needs to.]

You’ve got to be joking. And here I thought I was done with these backwoods environments. [Mainly referring to the phone, since hers was suspiciously missing.] Though, I have to say the ambiance is a little more than unsettling.

So, does anyone mind to explain what exactly is going on? It’s not every day a girl gets kidnapped then left alone.

Sample Entry Two:
The city of lights and the first snow of winter. What a sight. A robe clung to Ada’s skin, still wet from the hot perfumed bath, her eyes trained outside, watching the view from the veranda.

“Figures. Not even a hot bath with a view isn’t as relaxing as it sounds.” Musing to herself, Ada took half a minute more before closing the doors to shut out the cold. ”I guess after you’ve seen a light snow in Paris at night once already, it loses its spark the second time.”

Still, didn’t matter if a blizzard blanket all of Paris; she was going to have to leave all the same tomorrow. The cellphone was casually thrown on the counter, still well within reach of the woman’s grasp. The screen was a bit fogged from the steam and the cold night air, but the opened text message was still legible in white font against a black background: the newest orders from her employers. The paper trail leads to Brussel next.

“Black market dealers give one hell of a chase. Easy enough to track, but disappear before you even arrive in the same city.”

A different city every day. The dealers sure knew how to get their way around Europe in little to no time at all. Normally there would be no reason to bother; roaches like these popped up every day. What made this target so interesting was his recently acquired stock of biological weapons. All the more, the most recent customer and his purchase.

“Just what are you up to?”

Character Name: Holly Summers
Canon: No More Heroes
Canon Point: After her death
Background/History:Still just a bud.

Personality:
On her list of priorities, subtlety is definitely not high on Holly's. Her boss level is located on a local beach which she has not-so-sneakily made an obstacle course out of, complete with barbed wire, landmines, and lots and lots of her men. Then you reach her, and she's a lady in a camo two-piece with a chrome prosthetic for a left leg that can shoot missiles. Nope, Holly Summers doesn't do subtle well.

This comes across in the way she speaks. She wants to know how Travis, our wonderful protagonist, really feels about his non stop murder spree he's embarked on for no good reason, and she doesn't beat around the bush about it. The first words out of her mouth are a series of sharp questions: "Do you like fighting? ...Do you accept death?" When Travis responds in such a way that lets her know that, yes, indeed, this guy is a huge douchebag, she doesn't hold back on letting him know her opinion. She calls him a disappointment and later, stupid and pathetic. What's important to her is that she's telling the truth and trying to get Travis to realize it, even if it means she has to be very, very blunt about it.

Presumably, she does this with most people, getting them to take off the masks they carry and to stop hiding behind their egos. She claims to have a thing for "stupid, pathetic men" and while she could definitely mean this romantically, it could also mean that she likes getting stupid pathetic men to realize what they are, and to help them change, though it isn't confirmed or denied anywhere in canon.

Holly seems to be bothered in particular by Travis's complete dismissal of death. She evidently respects it a great deal, saying "Death is the only truth", but unlike her opponent, it isn't about a love for bloodshed. For Holly, being an assassin is about honour. When she loses to Travis, she would much rather be killed by him than try to get out of it. To her, it just seems simple: she's fully aware that she had entered into a duel to the death, one of them has to die, and it has to be the loser. She lost, so she has to die, whether Travis kills her or not.

Without hesitation or fear, she proceeds to stick a grenade in her mouth. She respects death, but not in such a way that she is afraid of it.

Abilities/Powers:
Weaponized Left Leg: Yes, you read that correctly.
♣ Replaces her left leg, allows her to walk, run, and generally get around.
♣ Judging by its shiny metallic colour, apparently chrome plated, making it easy-to-clean, corrosion resistant, and quite painful to be on the receiving end of.
♣ Capable of shooting heat-seeking missiles. In Haven, the missiles inside will be taken away along with the rest of her weapons, but she'll need to keep her leg to get around.

Knife Skills
Knowledge of Explosives: specifically landmines and grenades
Shovel Fu: skill in using a shovel as a close range weapon. The one she used was apparently made of Super Duper Wood because it was able to meet Travis's light-saber esque weapons without being sliced in half.
Adaptability/Strategy: She knows how to use her surroundings to her advantage. Seen in how she takes full advantage of her location on the beach, digging holes in the sand for traps. When Travis inevitably falls into them, she has the opportunity to throw grenades in there with him until he climbs out.
Academic Knowledge: She refers to herself as an academic, and her above strategy shows she's smart, but what exactly she's an academic of is never said. Headcanon states that it is psychology and botany.
Bi/Multilingual: This is mostly headcanon, but Holly comes from Sweden, so it only makes sense that she's fluent in Swedish as well as English.
♣(According to headcanon, she knows simple Vietnamese, due to her mother's side of the family being from there.)

♧ And finally SUPERMODEL POWERS: one of the few things we know for sure about Holly is that she used to be a model, and I don't know about you, but I consider the ability to run/stand up for long amounts of time in high heels to be one admirable talent.

Sample Entry:
[The feed opens to a rhythmic pattern of sounds. First a soft clunk, then a slight clicking. A clunk, then a click, clunk, click. At random intervals the rhythm stops, only to be filled with the sound of a hinge squeaking and someone knocking on something hollow and metal.]

I'm currently asking myself many questions, but I'll shorten them to a key two. I'll be sure to ask the others later. [The voice is soft, female, with a hint of a European accent.]

First: where might I find a bottle of baby powder? [There's a brief rattling, and then the video clicks on. There's a young woman with grey eyes and a very tousled head of short black hair, as though she's just woken up from a particularly bad nightmare. She's smiling softly at the camera as she lurches unevenly down the dimly lit stairwell.] You see, I'm absolutely covered in sand. [To prove her point, she pauses and angles the camera down towards her torso. Not only is she covered in sand, but she's wearing a camouflage two-piece swimsuit, as well as some sort of complicated artillery vest. But that's enough of her hot bod; she focuses it on her face again.]

Second: what kind of dumbom builds an apartment building without an elevator? [She gives a brief snort of laughter.] The kind completely insensitive to those who are missing certain crucial limbs. [She sighs as she approaches the next set of stairs, having made a quick turn on the landing. The limping descent begins again. She shrugs, smiling pleasantly.] Well, I certainly have been in worse situations.

Sample Entry Two:
She's alive again.

Sand flakes away under her thumb as she brushes it against her neck. She can't stop touching her hair, her scalp. To suddenly regain a head after one had stuck a grenade in one's mouth was simply impossible.

Then again, there had been a time when she believed missiles couldn't be fired from a metal leg, and look how that had ended. She chuckles to herself, and closes her eyes to think.

She cannot linger in this room forever. There's a fridge with no food and appliances that need fixing, not to mention that battered old cellphone that had been waiting on the bedside drawers when she woke. What's the point of giving her a phone if there aren't other people to communicate with? Unless whoever had chosen to give it to her had a particularly cruel sense of humour, and this was all a grand, heartless, dangerous joke.

To take away one of Death's prizes is to play with something much worse than fire, after all.

But that can be ruminated upon in bed, after a hard day's work.

Holly rolls her shoulders, tilts her head one way and then the other, hearing her neck crack. Leaning upon her sturdy metal pillar of a left leg, she stretches out her right, rolling her ankle to loosen it up.

Time to conquer her first goal: getting downstairs.

Character Name: Masaomi Kida (eventually Bakyura in the chatroom shared by several characters in the series)
Canon: Durarara!!
Canon Point: After he lands himself in the hospital but before he regains consciousness for his heart-to-heart with Saki. Last episode of the anime and thus near the end of the third novel.
Background/History: "Now it’s my turn to chase the past."

Personality: Masaomi Kida is quite the catch, if you can get past all the reasons he isn't. Spoiler alert, there are a lot of reasons.

This particular high school drop out happens to be a notorious(ly bad) flirt, a bit on the obnoxious side, and convinced that his jokes are actually funny. They're not. He's playful to a fault and over-animated, almost too passionate about what he enjoys. A true-blue extrovert who is always the most energized when surrounding himself with friends. His favorite pastime is to go out on the town and pick up girls, dragging his poor friend Mikado along with him when he can, but despite his big talk, he fails spectacularly. Of course, it's hard to get a girl to laugh with you rather than at you when you're flapping your elbows like a chicken.

Somehow though, when it matters most, even these outlandish traits can work in his favor. He's sensitive to others' feelings so long as they don't directly concern him and tries hard to make people feel better about themselves. The effort he puts into it is more than a little noticeable despite that it's often disguised as Masaomi's usual antics. In a way, that's all Masaomi's usual antics are: an attempt to raise everyone around him to his own excitement level. He wants a chance to be the hero, the good guy, a knight for all the princesses of the world. He has a certain charisma, an energy about him that can liven up any party and make anything his own. He can take charge or fool around; he scares away awkward silences and brings people together. All through joking around like a carefree dumbass. One of those people at whom someone can only shake their head and smile fondly while saying, "That's Masaomi for you."

Unfortunately, this too-happy-for-his-own-good image is little more than brightly colored wrapping paper meant to distract from the disappointing contents within. Masaomi doesn't act like a different person than he actually is or hide his true self behind a mask. What he does is willfully deny parts of himself because he doesn't want to or can't deal with them as he is. Chilling beneath the surface and shaping his otherwise sincere motives is a swirling miasma of guilt, depression, doubt, and self-loathing. It's partly for the benefit of others that he puts up the facade whenever he's with them, and it's partly for himself. He doesn't want anyone to know he's unhappy, especially why he's unhappy.

First and foremost, Masaomi is lonely. He has always been lonely. He has felt as if he has no place in the world, something that probably originated because his parents don't give a rat's ass about him or anything he does. He seeks out others in order to create that elusive place where he can belong, a place he lost when he moved to Ikebukuro, leaving his friend Mikado behind. In true Masaomi fashion, however, he has a tendency to search in all the wrong places. Faced with the transition from small town to big city, he dives head first into the thick of things and comes out the other end as the accidental but effective leader of a delinquent gang. After all, why settle for something small? If nobody cares, then he'll make them care. Masaomi isn't a flame, he's a firework! By forming his color gang the Yellow Scarves, the young rebel without a cause creates the place for himself that he’s wanted and thanks to Izaya is even able to find a girl with whom he can share it, Saki Mikajima.

Of course, the moment one utters the phrase “thanks to Izaya” is the moment shit hits the fan.

Guilt is one of the ultimate motivators. It is certainly one of Masaomi's. Though Izaya is the one who doesn’t answer his call for help, though the Yellow Scarves’ rival gang members are the ones who torture Saki, Masaomi Kida is the one who couldn’t save her. No actions anyone else may have taken against him shift an ounce of blame away from himself. He should never have allowed himself to become so dependent on Izaya’s help, he should never have allowed himself to become drunk with his victories, and he most definitely should never have allowed himself to freeze from fear. With the nurturing power of his anxiety and doubt, overwhelming guilt quickly spirals into depression and self-loathing.

Even as he slowly resolves his worst issues, he never forgets them. They remind him regularly of the consequences of his actions and of the people he has put in harm's way, giving him a foundation on which to base his pride. (If he doesn't help this person, he’ll never be able to look Mikado in the eye again, etc.) But these reminders at times also wreak havoc on his decision making skills which are already subpar at best, flushing the boy down more than one angsty teenage emotional spiral of misery.

Having experienced what he has, he has an almost inhuman determination, perhaps desperation, not to allow his friends to fall into "the dark side" of Tokyo the way he did. He will evade, lie, act, cheat, betray, kill, and die to make sure it doesn't happen. Nothing makes him angrier, nothing makes him more frightened, than losing it all again. Every transgression made toward them, every subtle sign of discomfort, he wants to change it. He didn't have anyone to hold him back before, so now he wants to be that person for others who need him.

What's grown out of this combination of motives is a fierce but faulty protectiveness. Not a possessiveness, but a misguided loyalty and will to preserve the peace he so enjoys, even if his methods mean he may never again be able to experience that peace himself. He’d rather give it all up then let it be taken from him again. Whether a person be a friend, an acquaintance, or a member of his gang, he places their safety into his own hands with a firm and steady belief that what they don't know won't hurt them.

This ties into one of Masaomi's coping mechanisms: a type of escapism made possible through intense compartmentalization. He has trouble seeing himself as one all-around person. Often he sees himself in parts and worries about what others will think when they see a side of him they don’t usually see. At times this fear is founded, which only fuels his concern even in situations where it’s not. When Mikado arrives in Ikebukuro, Masaomi splits his life into two realities, temporarily disregarding the reality of his life with his gang in order to start with a clean slate in the reality of his life at Raira Academy. In one reality, he is the amazing best friend of Mikado and Anri and failure flirt extraordinaire; in the other, he will punch an overzealous gang member across the room for not following orders. He keeps each reality as separate from the other as possible, so when the two worlds start to mix, he does all he can to stop it. His advice to both sides usually consists of "stay away from X," and any further questions will be answered with vague ambiguity or silence before the conversation is steered back to its correct reality. He takes it upon himself to watch out for problems on all sides and react accordingly, without informing those he's trying to protect of his other reality.

How can he tell them, when he's managed to convince himself his friends would hate him for it? He hates himself for it, after all. He hates himself for hiding it, for feeling like he has to hide it, for how he's handled past situations, for repeating the same mistakes. If he can hate himself so thoroughly, how can they not?

If it isn't noticeable enough already, Masaomi has some glaring trust issues. This isn't surprising when even his girlfriend spent a year in the hospital supposedly unable to walk, when in reality she had recovered some time before. He will avoid entrusting his fate to adults in particular so long as he has the choice. They're great for occasional advice, but if he sticks around too long, they'll betray him eventually. A history of parental negligence heaped on top of Izaya's cruel manipulation leaves him unable to count on the older generation to the extent that he doesn't even consider it an option. When faced with dire, suicidal circumstances, he has a ridiculously powerful but kind man towering above him telling him he shouldn't have to kill or die in a place like Tokyo, and instead of ask for help, he smiles and laughs and plays pretend like nothing is wrong until he can get moving again. His problems are his own.

It is, however, possible for Masaomi to enjoy someone's company, love them wholeheartedly, while knowing they are lying to him. Trust isn’t necessarily required for him to like someone because if it was, he would have no one to like. Rather, he ends up allowing others excuses for their lies while giving himself no quarter. Anri and Mikado both hide things from him, just as he hides things from them, but he is the one who doubted them not the other way around, so he’s the worst.

It's this sort of thinking that brings about moments when he allows himself to brood or be serious.

Alone, he has little to distract himself from his thoughts and the claustrophobic atmosphere of the gang-infested city streets. The change in not only expression but body language the moment he finds himself without an audience is readily apparent, as if a string that holds his head high and shoulders up is suddenly cut. Usually the only person who gets to see this kind of helpless brooding is Saki, though Izaya has a knack for bringing it out of him when he tries.

When Masaomi Kida gets serious, it's another story. When Masaomi Kida gets serious, he gets serious. And everyone is going to know about it. He is well aware of the horrors of which people are capable, that life is never fair, but he can only face his obstacles head on with a deadly glare and a nail puller to the ribs. He didn't gain the respect necessary to lead a gang through pretty words. Despite the silly jokes, the flirting, the insecurity, the guilt - Masaomi is a fighter at the core. He lives to survive, and to give others the same chance. If someone gets in the way of that, he will mess them up. When something is truly important to him, he won't let go of it so easily, even when it does nothing but hurt.

It's a little selfless, a little selfish, a little sacrificial, and a little self-sabotaging, but in the end, it's just a lot of Masaomi Kida.

Abilities/Powers: Masaomi has the remarkable ability to recite the most embarrassing lines you’ve ever heard with a straight face. Other than that, he’s your average human teenager who occasionally gets angry enough to beat down assholes twice his size.

Sample Entry: "Those who laugh at sexuality cry at the lack of it."

Masaomi had thought he'd had nightmares before. He'd laughed about them with Mikado and made fun of Fai's. But he'd never really had them. He'd never seen horrors like that so vividly before last week. It had taken him a while to remember the event. If one could call it that. What it had really been was seven days of testing his mental endurance. The overwhelming need to think about anything, anything other than the stench of death, the sight of blood, the feeling that the entire city was warping around him, taunting him, laughing at what an idiot he was. He didn’t have that kind of endurance.

He deserved what he'd gotten, but somehow he couldn't bring himself to say those words out loud. That would mean acknowledging what he'd done, and he didn't quite feel ready for that. He didn't feel ready for anything. What the hell had that been? A nightmare within a nightmare, a screw up within a screw up. He barely remembered anything, and yet he knew it had happened. He’d pissed off the wrong person. He’d done it on purpose. He’d damned the consequences, and they’d damned him. How was he supposed to feel about something like that? What was wrong with him?

The thought of seeing another person right then, any person, made him sick to his stomach. How pathetic could he get? And yet instead of rise above that nausea, he locked himself in his room for over an hour, trying to sort things out in his head while staring blankly at his splintering ceiling. How everything had happened, the order in which it had happened, the reasons he’d been forced to see those grotesque, gory recreations around every corner. Only when his throat ran dry was he willing to risk even running into a housemate, slipping out of his room and into the kitchen.

It wasn't a housemate he ran into.

When he returned to his room - glass of water in hand, hair sopping wet from a dunking - to see Jinx of all people panicking there, he didn't know what to do. And with the brazen courage of a lion, he froze up in the doorway.
